"No..." He said. "He didn't." He looked Kelsier in the eyes (well, technically eye, but you get the point). "But I don't want to talk about it. There's no way back, after all. At least, not for me." He laughed again. "There's only one place on Earth for people like me, and that's the insane asylum."

Wow. There's a lot of worldhoppers here. I guess I qualify as a worldhopper too. Even though I don't know how it happened...

“I’m fairly certain psychology there has improved beyond that,” Kelsier said lightly. “So what happens if I force you to answer a question your boss forbade?”

"I'd die," He said immediately. "Knowing I betrayed someone who had my trust." He shook his head. "An asylum is the only place I'd belong. I've changed since I was last home."

“Perhaps,” Kelsier said. “But I don’t think they have those anymore.”

So there was a suicide plan. The question was whether or not it had been activated. He flared his steel, allowing him to watch the flow of blood through Charlie’s body. He seemed fine. Still, better to be safe.

”Priére,” Kelsier said, glancing over at the priest. “Go fetch Verity for me, will you?” And pick up the antidote kit while you’re at it. And the emergency aid kit.

Fabriel? Priére sent.

Kelsier considered, then sent his assent. In aluminum. We can’t afford to waste Stormlight. It’s too hard to transport.

He turned back to Charlie as Priére left the cellar. “You don’t think your family would want you back?”

Mraize says he can get Stormlight offworld, so I’m assuming the GBs do accomplish that. Not to the point that they control the trade though.

"The boss told me to. He wanted to test a theory. I didn't want to, but I do what the boss says." He looked at Kelsier, insanity evident by the expression on his face. "And I know where I shot her. It didn't have to be her." He added. "Any one of the odd worldhoppers from Earth would have worked. But she was miserable anyway."

Kelsier nodded sympathetically as Prière reentered the cellar. “We do what we have to, right? In service to the cause.”

He raised his arm, glancing over at the priest. Priére gave a slight nod as Verity soared across the room, landing on Kelsier’s shoulder. She was a large bird with a golden head and black and gold banded wings. She settled as a heavy weight on his shoulder. Her bond, returned to him, immediately flared to life.

What Verity looks like. She’s an Iberian Imperial Eagle. Kell had a GB bring her as a chick to Patji, then had her returned to him. He wanted to see if she would become an Aviar. It worked!

Her wingspan is about 6.5 feet, she’s 31 inches long and weighs around 9 pounds. Yes, she’s big. And she isn’t even the largest of her kind! And there are bigger eagles. Eagles are awesome.

Trésor shrugged. “Master Thaidakar didn’t say. And I’m assuming the latter is why he ran off. If your in danger then she needs to be returned here as quickly as possible - assuming she’s alive to return.”

Hoblim panicked a little when he heard the "if she's alive" part, but forced himself to calm down. He didn't know anything, though... only now it began to dawn on him that he could be in real danger here. To distract himself, he opened his bag and pulled his book out again, memorizing the part he was at earlier, occasionally making sure he didn't accidentally store something he didn't want to.

Kelsier stroked her feathers gently, his face suddenly hard. “As I said, no masks, no deceptions. And no more games. Where are you from?”

He raised his arm and Verity soared across the space between him and Charlie, settling on the other man’s shoulder. A soft rhythm beat against Kelsier, emanating from the bird.

Like the lasso, people asked questions when Verity is on their shoulder and Kell is asking need to answer - and answer honestly.

CR: Mystic headed over to the ice box, pulling out two baguettes. She walked to the cooking area, turning on the heating medallion. The sliced baguettes went face down on top, and she began scrambling an egg and cooking sausage.

Rahasy pulled over a gemstone and a loop, making notations in Artisans’ script as he studied the cut and hue. Nearby, Arcane was transcribing symbols from a damaged stone cylinder. Across the room, Écho carefully disposed of her slide, before taking a petridish and working on creating a new one.

"Tennessee." He said. He frowned, his eyes widening. He hadn't wanted to say that, but he had. He gripped his cyanide pill, worried. Although, he wouldn't feel guilty about it if he had no control over it...

Lilliana was internally screaming. Why did it have to be a lab? At least if it was somewhere else, I wouldn't be interested in it. But science is my thing! And they have almost all of the equipment I wanted to go buy before I got shot! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! This is basically torture for someone who has ADHD. Like me. I want to be touching stuff, and doing stuff. The only thing I don't see that I wanted to try and find, is parts to build circuits.

Mystic finished frying the eggs and sausages, laying them to the side. She sliced the toasted baguettes in half and slathered butter on each. She laid these slices on plates, then spooned on the eggs and sausages. From the icebox she took a head of lettuce, a yellow pepper, and some cucumbers, which she quickly turned into a salad. A drizzle of hollandaise completed the dish.

”Help me bring these to the table?” She asked Lilli.

You are talking to a New Yorker. Most of us aren’t from Manhattan. Outerborough pride!

“Lunch!” Mystic announced once all the plates were down. The other three Ghostbloods put away their work, disposed of hazardous materials, and washed their hands before heading to the central table. Mystic put a few slices of raw sausage in a tray for Chance, then settled down to eat.

Kelsier laughed. “I’ve never known a New Yorker not to proclaim their borough. Hell, half of them think their neighborhood is enough!”

Quote

If you’re going to play a New Yorker... play a New Yorker! We will tell everyone our Borough. It’s a big deal. Each Borough has a different culture.

In fact, we tend to go further and specify which part of the Borough. “Kew Gardens.” “Flushing.” “Riverdale.” “Flatbush.” “BedSty.” “Borough Park.” “Mill Basin.” “Marine Park.” “Far Rockaway.” “Kensington.” “Bensonhurst.” “Harlem.” “Upper West Side.” “Lower East Side.” “Arlington.” “Concord.” “Belmont.” “Fordham.”  “Williamsburg.” “Hell’s Kitchen.” etc.

If you know someone is from New York, you also know their Borough and probably their neighborhood. The one they grew up in and the one they live in. Occasionally we get as specific as a particular street. If they often used the subway, you’ll know that too. If they usually drive particular roads you’ll know that. It’s a New York City thing.

I’m a Brooklynite, btw, which is why most of the above are Brooklyn neighborhoods. But if you asked me where I’m from I’d tell you a neighborhood.

My parents live near the F line along McDonald, and I used to live near the Q, close to Coney. My mother-in-law is near the Brooklyn Junction. I learned to drive on the Belt and the Jackie - and if you can drive those, you can drive anywhere. And, being that I AM a New Yorker, I assume you know what all of this means even if there’s no reason you would or should.

Short version: Charlie WILL know his boss’ Borough of origin - and should know the neighborhood in the Borough. He’ll know enough other random information for Kelsier to plot things out on a map.

CR: The four Ghostbloods ate their lunch, chatting comfortably among themselves.

The boss doesn't quite trust Charlie. He does talk about that stuff to some of the less insane people. And he's from staten island. I don't know places there, though.

Also, I have no idea what you were talking about. (I don't remember the name of the street I live on right now...) :P

"The boss is... Fairy reserved." Said Charlie.

Doesn’t matter if he’s reserved. This stuff will come out. I don’t think you understand NYC culture...

We don’t tell people we’re from New York unless we’re from Manhattan. So Charlie could not not know his boss wasn’t from SI. But odds are his boss said the NEIGHBORHOOD. It’s not about trust. It’s literally just how we introduce ourselves.

Conversation with random New Yorker: “So where’re you from?”

NY: “BedSty.”

OOT: “I’m not familiar with that.”

NY: “It’s in Brooklyn, between Bedford and the tracks, near Williamsburg.”

OOT: “...Oh. So you’re from New York?”

NY: (gives annoyed look) “Uh, yeah. That’s what I said. What’s with the third degree?” (Thinking: idiot out of towner tourist. (Nevermind that NYCer is out of town...))

Okay? That’s a New Yorker. Only Manhattanites say they’re from New York. And even they usually go by neighborhood.

I suggest you go look up some SI neighborhoods. (And note that SI BARELY counts as NYC. For... reasons. A lot of them would like to not be part of NYC.) I now know that the boss is White (Irish or Italian), probably blue collar, Catholic (with a slight chance of being Jewish), had married parents, is a Republican and likely knows how to use a boat and fish because... Staten Island.

Ok. Charlie is just inattentive then. Or he got hit in the head too many times to remember. :P

Or the boss had recently moved there from... California. Yep. That's what I'm going with. I've lived in California (Not my favorite place to live. Although, I did live in the most dangerous city in the whole state, so that could have something to do with it. And I just looked it up, and it's in the top 10 most dangerous cities in the US.), so that should work fairly well. This way, it actually makes sense why the boss didn't say anything. (I mean, Charlie doesn't even know the boss's name, so...)

Charlie sneezed.

Then he is NOT a New Yorker. And Charlie should not have called him that... That’s intentionally misleading in retrospect. And now I’m actually annoyed because non-New Yorkers do not get to call themselves New Yorkers and should NEVER be referred to as such. (Yes, this is a New York thing.)

Why can’t Charlie just say his boss is from Staten Island? That’s where someone living on Staten Island would say they came from. This solves the cultural issue. If you know the Borough, what’s the problem with him telling Kell?

Besides, even newbies don’t claim they’re from New York unless they live in Manhattan. We don’t even write it on mailing addresses. The Boroughs are essentially separate cities.

Kelsier’s eyes narrowed. “Which Borough?”

Quote

If you know the answer - even if you don’t know you know the answer - the lasso reveals it. So does Verity. This is also true if you are aware of the truth on some level.

And I’m seriously considering hitting Charlie with Haloperidol.

I now have a good reason for why the boss is so messed up. He lived in Stockton, California. The most terrifying city I've ever lived in. Apparently, 1 in 19 people in Stockton are victims of a crime. I wasn't allowed to walk down the street by myself. One of the teachers at the local high school was promoting pornography. The city is just messed up. And the boss contributed to the crime rates.

"Staten Island, if I remember correctly..." He squeezed the cyanide pill in his fist. If he revealed much more, he'd have to take it.

He’s tied up. He can’t move his hand.

Two: it’s still insulting to say someone who is not a New Yorker is from New York. And I’m mad about it.

Kelsier nodded thoughtfully, tapping his metalmind for the information Trésor had shared. “Fair skinned, lower education, blue collar, conservative views.” He said idly. “That right?”

Seeing as you don’t move to SI unless the above apply... it’s still accurate.
