“The easiest way to practice is to read a book and store the text,” Kelsier advised. “One you’ve already read once works best. Storing conversations can be disorienting, especially if you’re not used to it.”

”I’d take his advice,” Trésor agreed. “I was raised knowing of my powers, which is rather different than someone who only just received them.”

He looked at them. "Well, I wanted to store something relevant to our environment, and I don't have the Mistborn books here. At least not in an easy-to-memorize format." He hesitated. "I do have here a book or two I've read before, but..."

This could be a good time to bring up the books you have.

Hoblim took the book. "Thanks." He said. He hesitated for a moment.

"Well, if you're anything like me, you're probably disappointed you didn't get to nerd out. We can talk about it later, if you wish."

He talks to her while opening the book, searching for Khiss' essay on Scadial. "Sure. Like I said, I talk a lot too. My family usually doesn't like that - I made it a habit to talk while I do chores, and besides the fact that it means I'll be slower they mostly find what I said not interesting enough at the moment. I know to hold my tongue, but I almost never really want to."

He stops flipping when he finds the essay, and starts reading, with the intention to store when he finishes.

Well, here's a problem: I don't have Arcanum Unbounded right now, and I'm not sure I'll have easy access to it in the near future. So it'll be a little hard for me to tap...

"Yeah... But I have ADHD. One of the symptoms is literally excessive talking. I have a hard time stoping after I start."

She gave him a flat look. "No. I can't have conversations with others. Oh wait! We're having a conversation right now!" She said that sarcastically, and then paused. "Um, sorry if that was rude..." She said, embarrassed.

"Probably should've been clearer. The question was, since you find it hard to stop after starting to talk, I wish to know how hard. So hard that you completely ignore when someone comments on what you said? Or only that you'll resume talking immediately afterwards?" He looks back at the book while speaking.

"Well, we'll have to try and see. Anyway, I think I'll try focus on practising my Feruchemy now. Maybe you should try that with your Allomancy, too."

Hoblim resumed reading, taking his pen from his shirt and starting to play around with it a bit, opening and closing it quickly, many times in a row.

As a side note, their powers are way more powerful than they should be. The ferrings would be able to store more in the metalminds, and the mistings would have Era 1 strength powers.

That is probably a good idea. She uncorked a vial, and drank the contents. She then burned the metal, and winced. Should it be this loud?

The real question is what do you hear. Me storing? No one heard that yet, even in Era 1. The natural Rhythms? This is kind of weird. Kell burning a metal? Do we know that he does? People around using metals regularly? Are we sure this is a thing here?

Kelsier shook his head. “You shouldn’t be making yourself hot enough for it to matter. Giving yourself a fever isn’t generally a good idea.” Kelsier himself could go hotter, of course, but he was a brass savant. That had its benefits - and disadvantages. “There are blankets upstairs, and my crew will arrange for outerwear once we have your measurements. That should help when you’re storing.”

He paused, glancing over at Hoblim. “Store as you read. Focus on trying to store just the words, not the conversations. Memory is formed of many different parts. A big part of mastering copper is learning to store the pieces you want.”

He smiled at Lilli. “Lower your burn. I’m standing right next to you and my allomancy is stronger than most. It makes the pulses resound more powerfully.”

Kelsier is burning bronze and is skilled enough to hear Feruchemy. He is also lightly tapping brass, but I don’t think Lilli would be able to hear that. If I’m recalling right, WoB is that it takes a lot of experience.

As a complete aside, Kelsier really likes teaching.

I'm not sure that he did, in the original trilogy, but never mind that. He did have three centuries to train, but Kell was originally more centred  around pushes and pulls - I guess he will be a little different as a fullborn, though. I, for one, would've tried learning Seeking from Marsh. I think that with everything considered, Kell still won't be a good teacher for most metals even after 300 years. It's hard to specialize in one ability when you have many.

Kelsier enjoyed teaching Vin. You can see it in the way he explains the metals and his delight and pride in her skill.

Regarding Metals: he’s still a master of pushes and pulls. Bronze became important for him to learn once he better understood the concept of Rhythms, so he intentionally studied it. Marsh is still better, though Kell is more powerful. He spent time studying with Alriane and Breeze to learn to master the mental metals while learning not to fall over from his dual vision. He’s since spent some time utilizing only one metal at a time so he can get better at it. 350 years gave him some leeway for practice.

He is a brass compounding savant, which was an accidental side effect of having to create a LOT of heat medallions over an extended period. He technically should be a compounding Nicrosil savant and a Feruchemical aluminum savant for the same reason, but I have no clue what that would do, so let’s ignore that. Brass, at least, I have some ideas.

He’s also an Awakener and has a Seon and Aviar, but none of that has been relevant yet. He usually stores his Breath in Nicrosil.

"Okay." How do I... Ah. There. That is way better.

Hoblim stored as he read, trying very carefully to store the words, and not his association from them. He also made sure he stored it all in a specific metalmind - the uppermost one on his right arm. When he finished reading Khriss' essay, he thought for a moment, staring at the book. He could either work on the stories, or stick to the essays, which were more scientific and probably more relevant. But then again, stories were interesting, and sometimes held information...

He sighed, flipping a few pages back to the Elantris essay. His first coppermind was still mostly empty, and straight-forward information probably worked better than stories. Maybe he could take notes on the stories and memorize those. Speaking of which, he could memorize his translation table...

He realized he was digressing and returned to reading and storing.

Well, I don't have much to do until he finishes all the essays. Next he'll need Warbreaker's ars arcanum... Not that he knows that Lilliana has the book here.

Okay, really, how does brass work? Gah, we don't have enough info. How hot does the resistance go? Does it also apply to the cold from filling your metalmind?

(Note, I'm going 100% off the coppermind so if there's something I'm missing please tell me)

Yeah, I just read it, too, and it's mostly confusing. I think it's generally the heat of your body, and thus Kingsdaughter comment on fever. It still somehow helps you in extreme temperatures, though.

Well, yeah. I mean it would help you regulate your body temperature.

Lilliana tried to figure out exactly how seeking worked.

I think that normally you can’t tap or store to the point that it’s dangerous. If you’re very hot you can store more (like keeping yourself cool enough you don’t burn) and can tap more if very cold. You can theoretically tap/store to dangerous points, but your body will give out before long.

Kelsier is a brass compounding savant. So he can go much hotter/colder than most people, but his temperature regulation is as bad as the Southerners at this point - in both directions. So he actually needs to be tapping/storing most of the time to regulate his body temperature (which is why I said he was tapping brass). Good luck getting him to admit this.

I also think someone who is really good at brass Feruchemy could focus the heat to a specific body part. For example, my hands get cold easily. So I’d want to use brass to warm my hands, but not my core. I think you could do something similar with pewter (strengthen one particular body part) and Iron. Probably several others too.

Forgot to mention that he’s still storing his normal and steelsight in tin.

Random, Lilli can just ask Kell... He’d be happy to demonstrate the different metals for her.

This is both awesome, and annoying at the same time. She grabbed her rubix cube again, and stared fidgeting again. It actually did seem to help her adjust. I think I'm getting used to it now!

Wait.

"A Firesoul's body, not unlike a Skimmer's, is able to resist the higher temperatures of their Feruchemy"

I'm pretty sure I can go really, really hot without instantly dying sort of like how skimmers can go really, really dense without crushing themselves, especially since I remember you have to use compounding to actually harm yourself with brass heating.
