"I'm sorry."

"What about everybody else?" she asked Trace, Shade, Shidala, and other people there.

"What the #%!& just happened?!?!?! How am I supposed to know what to do, when I don't know what the #%!& just happened?!"

"Aryanna?" Janice whispered. "Can I... tell you something? Later, I mean?"

"Of course."

The school was taking shape when the first recruits began to arrive.  He didn't ask them where they came from, or why they wanted to help.  Some were broken individuals, hurt and scarred by their lives.  Others were loudspoken, passionate individuals.  Old men came.  Teenagers.  Young adults.  They were all the same to him.  They all had passion, and a healthy dose of concern for their families, friends, and humanity.

Hopefully, this would work.  It would have to.

Cadenza made her way to the city, but she wasn't sure how to enter the school.

True to reports, winds danced through the streets, though mostly above 7 feet above the ground, to avoid being too disruptive.  There was a musical quality to the way they hissed, whispering.

Cadenza shivered at the noise and went up to the door of what she assumed was the school, knocking tentatively.

The great doors swung wide, as several students exited the building, chatting.  One of them flexed their arm, and sparks of light danced on their fingertips.  Excitedly, they chattered about how she'd never known just how powerful she was, and one of the boys wrapped an arm around her and laughed, talking about lunch.  It was conspicuously normal for a madman's training grounds.

Cadenza stepped inside, standing straight by habit, and looked around for a reception desk of some sort.

It was normal, the entryway lined with new shelves and old books.  An old lady sat behind a desk, while some students with laminated ID tags checked IDs as people entered in and out.  The ancient woman popped a bubble of gum, then propped her chin on her knuckles.  "You looking for someone, sweetheart?"

"I promise we'll try to save your sister."

She smiled. "First, I need to know what the heck is going on."

"You, I assume. I'm joining."

The woman smiled, sugary.  The wrinkles in her cheeks that tripled made it very clear that she was a smiler.  "Let me just get you a registration form, and we'll put you in one of the Siren's classes," she nodded, rifling through some papers in a boxy shelf behind her.

"Are there any classes without her?"

I'm aware that he's male, but she isn't.

The woman blinked, raising her eyebrows.  "Dear, the Siren is the only teacher currently at this school.  We have a general or two willing to come out of retirement to teach strategy, but it is considered... well... an opportunity to learn under him.  He is, after all, someone of great talent and skill."  She had a dreamy look in her eyes.  "If I were twenty years younger..."

More like, if she were at least forty years younger.  And if she was, maybe her eyesight would be improved enough to see just how disfigured Vespyr's face was.

"Of course!" Maddy said. "I wasn't thinking anything of the contrary."

"Uh... Okay. I'll just grab my bag." She didn't bother using the front door, but climbed up to the window, and slid in. A moment later, she had safely landed on the ground with her stuff.
