"Oh. Should I have gotten approved before coming in?"

He shook his head.  "You must have said you were a proficient at sparring on your registration if she sent you up here, right?"

"Yeah, I think so. But yes, I'm pretty practiced."

"Aryanna?" Janice asked at an incredibly quiet whisper, almost three hours since she first sat down.

@Vapor

"Yeah?"

"Can you..." Janice gestured for her to sit down.

Aryanna sat down next to her. "Yeah?"

He nodded. “Yeah, For sure!  I should go fight someone else now. There’s this other girl who has really long hair, she might be a challenge for you.”

Aryanna sat down next to her. "Yeah?"

Janice laced her fingers together, sitting in silence for a few minutes. Her hands still shook, and her gaze was distant.

"It just doesn't feel real," she said finally.

"What doesn't? What do you mean?"

"Cadenza being gone."

"Yeah," Aryanna sighed quietly. "But where would she have gone?"

"I don't know. She said she was going back home."

"I doubt she would. I got the impression she hated that place."

"Were we her only real family?"

"You could say that."

"You're my only family." Janice relaced her fingers. "Did I ever tell you that I was going to have a little sister before my parents died?"

"You were?"

"My mom said I was," Janice replied. "But I didn't understand what she meant back then."

"How old were you?"

"I was three." Janice pulled up the end of her cloak and ran her fingers along the Trace on her right arm. "I was already like this. My parents never hated me or called me anything because of these. When I lost them, everyone started... being mean, and... calling me soulless. They said I was a monster. Nobody loved me. My mom was really the only person who did, but... she was gone."

Janice worked her fingers, then closed her fist and continued. "I thought nobody would ever love me again. I thought I was going to live and die a monster like everyone said. But then... I met you." She looked up and met Aryanna's eyes. "You were the first person to ever look at me and not hate me since my mom. You've never called me a monster or soulless or anything. And I... I'm..." She closed her eyes and squeezed out a single tear. "Thank you."

Aryanna wrapped Janice into a hug. "I'm sorry," she whispered.

Janice rested her head on Aryanna's shoulder, still shaking, but feeling safer. "My mom would... she would sing a song to me every night. I don't remember what it's called, but I remember the words. She said the words meant that she would always be my mother, and I'd always be child, and if I needed someone to be there for me and love me like a daughter, then even if she was gone there would be. So when I met you... because you were there for me... you're still there for me... I--" She swallowed. "Could you... I was wondering if... if you could sing it for me."

"I don't know how it goes."

"I could teach you." Janice pressed closer to Aryanna. "I just... need someone to be... like a mother."

"I'll be there whenever I can."
