The boy threw a half-hearted punch.

Cadenza dodged out of the way and tossed a little snowball at the boy.

He blocked it with his forearm, then stepped up into her, lifting a knee into her stomach with some force.  The snow itself didn't stick to him or crush -it did crumple slightly, but the snowball nearly rolled over his skin.  He got very slippery, for even a snowball to remain mostly unmarred.  "Take me seriously, please!  I can't learn if I don't fight for real."

Cadenza tensed her abs and took the blow without too much effort. "Seriously, you say? Are you sure?"

He clenched his jaw, and a bead of sweat rolled down his forehead.  He nodded curtly, and pushed his glasses up one more time.

"You got it." Cadenza stepped back and a pillar of ice rose beneath her feet. She slid off the edge and made a ramp down to the boy, swooshing past and landing a jab in his gut.

It was a time consuming move, and fortunately for him, he wasn't absolutely inept.  He turned his body and sidestepped backward.  Her fist grazed across his stomach instead of landing squarely.  With his ability, he had to be more dexterous if he wanted to last in a fight.  He simultaneously stuck out an arm in front of her face, so her own momentum might send her crashing flat on her back.

Cadenza ran into his arm, but she kept her balance. She lost her momentum, though. She spun and ducked down, kicking out at his legs.

He staggered, stumbling on her ice, and fell down to his knees.  He held his a arms vertically, protectively, in front of his face.

Cadenza heard the wind around them cut a soft voice from nowhere.  "Good job maintaining your balance.  Your opponent is faster than you and difficult to hit, but you have the perfect ability to stop him in his tracks.  You are using your ability to increase your own skill, but that's just making things more difficult.  See if you can't use your ability to stop his advantage instead of trying to match his."  It was a vague hint.  Vespyr wasn't going to give all of the answers, of course.

The boy, too, had cocked his head to the side, as if he was listening to advice as well.

"Hmm. Well, snowflakes. Tell me what he told you and I'll tell you what he told me?"

"That's not how this works," he said, fumbling slightly.  He quickly stepped up, back onto solid ground and off an icy patch.  He raised his hands again and went on the offensive, coming in with quick, sharp punches.

Cadenza pursed her lips and dodged all but one of the punches. She stepped back and bit her lip, then encased the boy in ice.

"Free his head and ribcage immediately," Vespyr advised calmly, "The match is yours, but this is only a training session."

The boy was frozen, eyes wide, and the ice shifted slightly, as though he were struggling futilely from the inside for breath.

Cadenza did so. It wasn't like she was going to leave him there. In fact, she let it all melt.

He immediately threw his glasses off his face and rubbed his palms into his eyes.  "Crap, my eyes were open!  I think you froze them!"  He blinked, and fortunately was just being melodramatic.  It had hurt, though, quite a bit.  "That-" he said, sounding angry, but he quickly stopped.  He instead smiled, then looked up.  "That was brilliant!  I really screwed up when I asked to fight you, huh?"

"Yeah, maybe." Cadenza tossed her hair. "Sorry."

He rubbed at his cheek.  "We could- uh.  Fight again.  Or pick a new partner.  Or take a break and get lunch?"  He stuck a hand out.  "I'm Corwin."

He winced slightly.  "I'm probably coming on a little strong, aren't I?  You just got here.  You probably want to fight some more and figure out classes.  Um.  If you want, we could meet in the cafeteria?" his voice sounded hopeful, but then he threw up his hands. "Not-that-you-have-to, but if you wanted- or- I dunno, were bored or something-" he fumbled on the floor to try to find his glasses again.

"No, you're all right. Actually, the secretary wasn't very helpful... maybe you could give me a hand figuring things out?"

"She's not a combat specialist, but she wanted to help out, and she knows paperwork.  If the school looks legit, there's more likelihood it'll be accepted instead of dubbed a terrorist organization by the nation."  His face flushed slightly.  "Oh, and yeah, I can help out.  So..."  He gestured around.  This is our first class.  It's pretty relaxed.  The professor is here from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and everyone is expected to spend about 2 hours of the day here, practicing.  He's usually dealing with people up in the wings, but he can really split his attention really well.  Those wheels of wind?  He's giving advice to all of the fighters simultaneously to improve their fighting skills.  I honestly don't know how he can manage everyone at once."  Corwin finally found his glasses and slid them back onto his face.  His eyes looked bigger behind the thick lenses.  "There are supposed to be other classes soon.  He's trying to get some military strategists and sergeants to teach survival tactics, team fighting, and maneuvering.  I think he's also trying to get a therapist or something to teach morality and ethics.  I guess he's got a friend or something who is really against violence, so he doesn't want any of us using these lessons to go psycho."

Corwin stepped to the side so another pair of fighters could take their place. "The class is pretty simple, though.  You pair up and spar.  You try to get in 20 bouts a day, or like I said, 2 hours of practice.  Not everyone is good enough to start fighting right off the bat.  There's another room where people work on tuning into their abilities, and another for physical conditioning.  I-" he blushed, "I only just got approved to start fighting yesterday, but that's because I learn pretty fast, not because I'm really good at any of the moves."
