Well, I must admit the post could've been interpreted two ways. As in, you were joking about the knife being there or about the knife being a usual thing people carried in their handbags.

On with the show!

Cruz shakes his head. He should probably get some rest soon.

Sorry!  I had a comment in the same post saying that the knife was just for fun, not for real.
Time skip and battle royale it up?

Hehe no it's fine, I saw the comment in the post but i misinterpreted it as saying the knife being in an everyday handbag was a joke.

Um. Time skip? Fine with me.

"Certainly," Cruz turned around., facing the opposite way. "Interesting that demons still have sensibilities."

Cruz picked up the knife and placed it to his ear.

Trace finished changing the rest of her clothing while his back was turned.

Vespyr woke them both the next morning, then herded them to the entrance.  The creature gestured at them, as if stepping out into open air from a cliffside was perfectly natural.  "Go on," it encouraged, "I don't have all day."

Trace waited until Cruz had fallen asleep, then carefully crept out to the mouth of the cave.

Vespyr stood at the mouth of the cave, like a sentinel.  It stiffened as Trace approached, but didn't otherwise move.  "You should rest."

"I'll be back in the morning. I wouldn't just ditch Cruz and run away after I gave my word to return."

Vespyr twisted its neck to stare at her.  "I know of our kind.  That boy would kill himself to save you.  He should not have illusions that you would do the same for him." Vespyr put an almost friendly hand on Trace's shoulder.  "Do not expect me to lie to myself for your sake."

"I almost did die to save him!"

Vespyr hesitated.  There was a long moment of silence, and it seemed for a moment that the creature was now just ignoring Trace.  Finally, though, it spoke.  "I will not let you go unsupervised.  If we leave this area and you try anything, he will be trapped with no escape in this place.  You would betray his faith by abandoning him here?"  There was no condemnation in the low, scratchy voice, despite the words.

"I don't mind if you come with... just don't try to stop me from doing what I have to do."

Vespyr looked down at the child, body-language unreadable, face masked.  "You have two hours until sunrise," Vespyr finally said, "I will accompany you, and we will leave whether or not you complete your task."  Vespyr did not wake up Cruz.  Vespyr wasn't one to meddle.  Still, something Trace had said must have resonated with the stalwart creature, which stood back to let Trace look down the cliffside.  How would the girl get back to society?  She'd need to step out into open air and fly or have some sort of amazing ability to climb.  Vespyr had chosen this location due to how isolated it was, and how it was a perfect natural prison.

Trace looked down the cliff, then took in a deep breath. She pulled out her knife, closed her eyes, and stabbed herself in the arm.

Vespyr tilted its head again.  "I fail to see the benefit of this.  Healing your wounds did not regenerate the lost blood, so far as my understanding can tell."
