Vespyr tilted its head again.  "I fail to see the benefit of this.  Healing your wounds did not regenerate the lost blood, so far as my understanding can tell."

Trace leapt off the cliff, using her pain to create bursts of power; essentially an invisible staircase for her to run down. She'd never tried doing it before, though so her steps were awkward, and when she hit the ground, she hit the ground hard.

"We can't stay in this city much longer," said a deep yet rich voice, "We've had our fun, this past six months, but it's coming time we need to leave the island altogether."

The man, with his pale white skin and a pencil thin mustache, had the point of a clean and straight shiny dagger to the surface of the table everyone was sitting at, slowly twisting it around, slowly digging deeper and deeper into the table. But Cruz wasn't scared of him; Sebastian was his friend.

"Not a problem, Seb," came a scratchy voice from the man on Cruz's left. Dant. "We've done it before."

"We're going to get killed any day now," said Yugo, a man with wavy brown hair. "I agree. We need to move our operations."

The woman at the table, Inesa, sighed. "And what of our operations with Lacion?"

"We'll have to close negotiations without arousing any suspicion. I doubt Lady Lacion has a clue about our real intentions, and I don't want to give her any hints. A risk I'm willing to take." Sebastian glanced at Cruz. "But what about our little Cruz?"

Cruz stiffened. He was fifteen, being trained as an assassin, and they still called him their little Cruz. But that was okay, he supposed, so long as they didn't leave him.

Dant looked at Cruz and smiled. "He can quit his training, come with us. He's one of us now, aren't you?"

Cruz nodded. "Yes," he said quietly.

"Lacion will be suspicious," Inesa protested.

Sebastian shook his head. "We'll have to be quick about it. We can–"

"No," said Cruz, but no one heard. They usually didn't, but it was fine.

Everything was fine.

Trace picked herself off the ground, grunting a little at the effort. She could still see the ocean from here. There wasn't anything on it.

Come on, Trace thought to herself. Come on, you guys...

Maddy looked up. “Oh, we’re here!” Indeed, the island lay in view, growing larger on the horizon. It would make a beautiful painting in another day, though now she was on a mission.

"You can quit your training, Cruz," said Dant. "We can train you some more, but you're already very good at Sugando."

"Why can't we stay?" Cruz asked. "This is my home, and Lena is nice to me."

"The people of this island are going to want to kill us for what happened last night," said Sebastian.

"Why?" he accused, growing angry. "What did you do last night?"

No one said a word.

"What do you do when I'm not around?" Cruz said quietly. "That gets the entire island to want to kill you?"

After a long silence, Sebastian finally answered. "Maybe in the future you can know about it," he said, "but you have not earned that right yet, little Cruz."

"Why not?" he demanded. "Am I not an equal? I am only a few years younger than the rest of you!"

"You are not an equal," Sebastian said smoothly. "You are a valuable asset, but not an equal. If you wish to leave us, then go right ahead. Nothing is stopping you."

Cruz froze. Leave them? Sure, he was maybe suspicious of their activities, but he wouldn't leave them. They were his friends, and they knew that. He didn't even have his parents anymore.

Sebastian chuckled. "That's what I thought. So you're willing to leave with us, then? It doesn't matter that you're leaving your home. We are your home."

Cruz hesitated, but nodded. "Of course. I'd do anything for my friends," he whispered, and Sebastian smiled.

A light appeared on the horizon.

"That's them," Trace whispered to herself.

Vespyr touched down lightly behind Trace, still seeming like a shadow, watching bemused.  "Tell me what is happening."  Apparently, the ship out ahead was whomever this girl wanted to meet up with.  Hell of a coincidence; they almost didn't believe it themselves.  The right time, the right place... Did Trace have a tracking device implanted or something?

A pair of knives, covered in soot and blood, forgotten on the floor.

Lena, standing among the ashes of what once was Sebastian's lair, over Cruz.

"I told you to stop hanging out with them," she said sadly.

"You killed them!" Cruz screamed, "You murdered them!"

"You don't know what they've done," came the reply.

"They were my friends, Lena! They were all I had!"

"Then what am I?" asked Lena.

Cruz didn't answer as he picked up Sebastian's knives and walked away, leaving Lena behind. He couldn't speak to her right now...

He needed to get off her island.

Vespyr shuffled.  Really, the air around them seemed restless, and the waves crashed unevenly on the shore.  "Do not make me regret this.  It will make our journey most unpleasant."

"I just need to get one of them alone."

"So I can finish my mission."

Vespyr was significantly annoyed by this refusal to answer the question.  "Then," it said thoughtfully, "I shall sink their ship and fetch you a captive."  Vespyr watched for the reaction patiently.

"Don't you dare. I need to get them myself, or this isn't going to work."

"That's not it. I need Janice to see everything I do being done by her own hands."

Janice...  "Janice is... within your mind?" Vespyr asked.  There were lots of ways people coped with what happened to them.  Two people.  One mind.  "This is unnecessary and foolish," Vespyr decided.  "You will interfere with my orders to exacerbate your mental issues."  Vespyr shook its head, then spoke from behind the mask.  "You will fall if you fight now.  You have lost blood.  You are powerful, but you are nothing to many.  You can become more, but only through the Queen."

Oh damn it all.  If this teenager -pre-teenager?- got herself killed in a fit of mental issues, Vespyr would be the one who would face the consequence from the queen.  But then again...  If Trace wasn't allowed this foolishness, she'd probably behave in the most annoying, obnoxious way possible all the journey.  "I will fight with you.  I will remove you if you act recklessly."

Damn it.  Was this really devolving to babysitting?  Most of Vespyr just wanted to fling the child over one arm and get flying in the right direction.  The other part understood.  Failing the queen was... unpleasant.  There was empathy there.  Vespyr would need to work on that later; it was getting in the way.

"This is Janice's body. I was told to purify it, and Janice's soul, if possible. She resisted purification for over a decade, so I've opted to try to kill her soul and just purify the body." Trace sighed. "If you want to fight alongside me, that's fine, but only pull me out if it's clear I'm going to fail."

I have no clue where this island is but somehow I'm going to run into it now.

Lloyd saw the little spot on the horizon, it was an island which was just what he was looking for. "Looks like we made it to an island."

Now that she was looking, Cadence Cadenza could see the island. It wasn't such a big thing. "Where's Janice?"
