Yeah, sorry about that. I overlooked an earlier post.

Are we going to do another round or a new concept?

I would welcome someone else creating a new thread for the next game. I've put a few suggestions earlier in the thread, but if you come up with something better then go with that! I don't really mind who runs that thread, although maybe @Illwei and @Experience should get first dibs? Whoever makes that thread, please post a link in this thread so there can be continuity.

Yep with assassinations having a small chance to turn them into a returned or the players are the pantheon with houses being like the priesthood

I say we do a poll on this thread and then somebody can choose to do the next one? @ElectrumSavant if we decide to do it you have to make the poll

Sure! Everyone, post whatever theme ideas you have, and I'll set up a multiple-choice poll on, say, Monday afternoon with all of the suggestions that people posted.

Here are the ideas I posted a while ago for the theme:

  • Imperial Nomic: The Well of Ascension (with a King as the leader)
  • Imperial Nomic: The Alloy of Law (with a Governor)
  • Imperial Nomic: The Catacendre (with a Lord Mistborn)
  • Imperial Nomic: Makabak (with a Prime Aquasix)
  • Imperial Nomic: Alethkar (with a King)

Can we do a democratic one next? That would work with Nalthis.

I think that one of the major reasons that this Nomic thread succeeded (in the sense that the game reached a successful conclusion) where the others did not is because it was an Imperial Nomic, with a leader to keep things moving along quickly and to make the final decision on an issue when two people disagreed. So I think that we should definitely make an Imperial Nomic sequel. But, we do have two winners. If enough people want, you could make two Nomic threads, one Democratic and one Imperial, and people would be free to play in one or both of them. To be clear, I'm not advocating that, but I am giving it as an option if there are enough people who want a Democratic game.

If someone makes a Democratic Nomic, though, I think it would be a good idea for there to be starting rules that established a neutral player (probably whoever started the thread) who had the job of making sure that the game ran smoothly- updating the rules, making Judgments, and counting votes. The rules need to be easily accessible, which is part of why I think it works best for the person who started the thread to also be the person who updates the rules. I also think that the position of Census Taker (someone who regularly posts which players are active and how much money they have, originally Obligator and later High Prelan in this game) is essential to make sure everyone knows what is going on.

I also want to note what a difference having a time limit had on this game. I started the thread in August, and after a lot of consistent participation for about a month(?) the thread went quiet for a long time. Establishing a time limit, though, really boosted participation and also made the thread seem more like a game.

So yeah, there are my suggestions. I think that Imperial works better than Democratic, that some kind of leader is needed either way, that Census Takers are essential, and that a time limit isn't necessarily required but also is something to consider.

Also, whoever starts the next thread, put some serious thought into your starting rules! You don't want a ton of them, but you do want a basic framework to make the game run smoothly without obvious loopholes. Unfortunately, I don't have the text of my original post for this thread, or else I would post the rules that I started with here. But feel free to examine the existing rules that I have in the first post for ideas.

EDIT: Oh! One more thing I just remembered as I was reading the original rules (thanks, AonEne): have some kind of built-in rule for what to do if the leader stops playing. We never actually used that rule in our game, but what if I had gotten bored and left? It's good to be prepared for if that happens. And if it does happen, again let me emphasize the importance of an easily accessible list of Rules. I would actually suggest that if the original leader stops playing before a Nomic game ends, the new leader should start a new thread, provide a link, and just copy the existing Rules over.

Good tips, I'm convinced! I love me some good organization. And here:

Spoiler

Welcome to Imperial Nomic! This game is a version of Nomic, a game where the players actively change the rules of the game. Players make Proposals of new laws or propose Amendments of old laws. All of the rules (including these rules here in the introduction) can be changed. All of the players are trying to win, but the requirements for winning and the methods for getting there change throughout the game. In this case, the players win when they get 1,000 Atium. Players get 5 Atium for every Proposal or Amendment that they make that is approved.

What makes Imperial Nomic different from regular Nomic is that in Imperial Nomic, a leader (in this case the Lord Ruler) is there to keep things organized and going at a quick pace. In regular Nomic it takes a long time to get a majority vote from all of the players involved, but in Imperial Nomic the Lord Ruler is the one who approves or rejects all Proposals, so it goes much faster. The Lord Ruler's power is balanced by the fact that he/she cannot personally make Proposals or Amendments; only non-Lord Ruler players can do that, although the Lord Ruler can suggest some things that he/she would be likely to approve, and can note in approvals or rejections his/her reasoning. In addition, the Lord Ruler cannot win the game while he/she is Lord Ruler.

For some administrative help, the Lord Ruler can appoint any single person who volunteers for the position as the Obligator. The Obligator has the role of posting a Census as often as the Obligator wishes, although it can't be more often than once per page. This Census should include a list of all players who have posted in the last two weeks and their current amount of Atium, the current Lord Ruler and Obligator, and any pending Proposals or Amendments. The Obligator gets 10 Atium for every Census posted.

I will try to keep the area below updated with all of the current laws. I hope this will be fun!

Basic Rules

  Hide contents
  • All players must always abide by all the rules then in effect, in the form in which they are then in effect.
  • Rules come into effect at the moment that the Lord Ruler approves them.
  • Any player besides the Lord Ruler may make a Proposal or Amendment, which can affect any rule, including the Basic Rules. Players gain 5 Atium for any proposal or amendment that they make that is approved by the Lord Ruler.
  • If rules come into conflict with each other or a player violates a rule, a player may Call For Judgement. If this happens, the Lord Ruler will determine the proper interpretation of the rules, and may award or take away Atium.
  • A player (except for the Lord Ruler) wins when they gather 1,000 Atium.
  • The game ends when any player wins.

Offices

  Hide contents
  • Lord Ruler- The Lord Ruler has the power to approve or reject all Proposals and Amendments. The Lord Ruler cannot make Proposals or Amendments on his/her own. However, the Lord Ruler can post suggestions about laws that he/she would support, and can provide reasoning in the posts listing rejections and approvals. The Lord Ruler cannot gain or lose Atium while in office. The Lord Ruler cannot win while in office. The starting Lord Ruler is ElectrumSavant.
  • Obligator- The Lord Ruler can appoint any one person at a time who volunteers for the position as the Obligator. The Lord Ruler can change the Obligator at any time. The starting Obligator is ElectrumSavant.
  • The Obligator can rewrite pending proposals and amendments, as long as the meaning of the proposals are not changed.
  • If the Lord Ruler has not made a post in two weeks and the Lord Ruler was not the last person to post, the Obligator can become the Lord Ruler by posting "I am the new Lord Ruler" or something to that effect. If the Obligator also has not posted in two weeks, then the first person to post "I am the new Lord Ruler" or something to that effect becomes the new Lord Ruler.

Another possible idea could be Newcago with the epics (Steelheart)

That does sound awesome. We could also do a version where the epic in charge can be overthrown, and if someone is in charge long enough, they win

we could also do a Nalthis one, similar to imperial nomic, with a God king and pantheon.

That's what I was thinking of because imperial is definitely the way to go

The poll is now up for the theme of the next game. Feel free to vote for as many potential themes as you want.

Experience, it seems to be the consensus that you are running the next game, so feel free to start that up when you feel that enough people have voted and be sure to post a link in this thread.
