Oh. Well then sorry. I withdraw. My boyfriend wouldn't be happy anyways.

Still. I can't wait to get more background information about him.

Weirdly enough, this theory makes sense. Taln's attributes as a herald are dependability and resourcefulness, so I could see a person like that sacrificing his own mortality and well being for some one else. Also it would explain why Ash is so attached to him in Oathbringer and would explain a large portion of her brokenness, she abandoned her lover to save the world.

Better update my head canon as Ash may not have been alive before the exodus

Quote

DiscordBondsmith [PENDING REVIEW]

Were the Heralds alive for the human exodus from Ashyn?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Yes. They were not Heralds then, but they all made that trip. I believe. You can't nail me down on that one, because it's possible that Ash was born after, but I don't think so.

I mean, that WoB doesn’t necessarily disprove your theory. Taln could’ve been Ash’s bodyguard once they were settled on Roshar. And all the Heralds (besides Ishar, probably) could’ve been children at the time of the exodus.

huh I'm surprised any of the heralds were alive at that time... I always figured there were a couple generations between when the people from Ashyn came and the Heralds were around. Apparently not.

There goes the idea that the Radiants could learn more about Ashyn, the Dawnshards, etc. from her. I'm sure she'll be woefully uinformed, at least about the really important stuff, on this topic.

*sigh*

It's never storming easy, is it?

She could very easily still be a source of information about all of that.  Even if we assume that she was born, say, a hundred years after the exodus to Roshar, knowledge of such an event would still be culturally relevant (and thus maintained).  People that she knew would have made the journey.

And, since she was one of the 'intended' Heralds, I find it doubtful that she would be ignorant about the Dawnshards, even if her knowledge was only second-hand or theoretical.  At worst, she would be unable to provide first-hand, primary knowledge about these events, but she should still be able to help with second-hand reports.  I just can't imagine fighting side by side with your father for a thousand years and never learning about the planet that he fled from, ya know?

I'm sure she'll know some things, like information about Ashyn society, maybe even how the place got wrecked, but I have a feeling that the really important stuff, like the Dawnshards, will be things she doesn't know for some reasons. Can't have the heroes finding out too much too soon.

I think it far more likely that she'll be able to give them the same information as all of the other heralds would, and tell them about what the Dawnshards were, the fall of Ashyn... All of it.

But that that information isn't going to help them at all. The Dawnshards are lost and/or changed. Honor's death makes certain historic thing infeasible. Etc. Etc.

Her not knowing doesn't make sense. Her knowledge being worthless does.

I was thinking the reason for saying Ash was born after the exodus was to have a somewhat plausible explanation for why she would not be made aware of certain things like the Dawnshards, like perhaps her father simply not telling her for some reason.

I'm sorry, but I can't buy that. Either she made the trip herself, or she was born on Roshar with enough time to be an adult (and a capable one at that) by the time she was chosen to be one of the Heralds.

Even if Jezrien had wanted to shelter her, she grew up among the people who crossed over and became the person on which the Lightweavers were built to mimic. She'd have found out what she wanted to.

What shall we call this ship? Talash? Asln?

Eh, probably Talash.

Anyway, I totally believe this is canon now.
