She laughed a genuinely amused laugh.

"How righteous of you, acting like just because you failed at something, that means no one else can succeed. In any case," she said, jabbing a smokey finger in his direction, "I have not made my decision yet, so stop pretending like you know better."

When do you think you'll do the ritual?

Malevolence shrugged. “I merely speak from my own experience. Listen or do not.”

You believe that one will claim the Witherlord. I am inclined to disagree. I can show you, however, how to use the Order present to separate your being from their influence.

I disagree with your philosophy, as is obvious. If the point of evil is power, then “true evil” does not exist. For there are no principles that I must adhere to in my search for power. Only what benefits me.

You cannot. But I understand why you believe you could. And as I said, Evil is not about  power. What is the point of power if you have not a goal? Evil gives the goal.

Ribbon paused for a second to sift through Malevolence's words. She chose her words carefully.

I don't need you to cure her for me, Ribbon said softly to Malevolence, I think that she's perfect as she is right now.

Malevolence transmitted a sound somewhere between a sigh and a gag.

My apologies. I see that you actually enjoy being used and abused by an uncaring monster. Open your eyes. Fog has only ever stolen your power and manipulated you into doing her will. She cares not for you, nor ever will unless she is changed.

I assure you.

I can.

And what goal is do you claim as yours? A goal is not a matter of gradience. You can not get more of a goal by being more evil. And if you require power, if you require the Witherlord, to dictate to you your goals… you are nothing more than a common beast. Feasting to feast, hunting to perpetuate the hunt.

. . . a printer? That would make sense . . .

Look if he were to clone himself. Which he wouldn’t because he doesn’t inherently have powers and couldn’t share the pen. But it would be funny

actually wait it wouldn’t work because that’s not the way Inkwell looks at art- and for something to be magically created it must be considered art by him

which is why the signatures never manifest In reality, or the Mark.

And then we could analyze the printing dots to discover which printer performed this marvelous feat!

She hasn't manipulated me. Ribbon said firmly. Perhaps that is the way you see things unfold, but to me it is quite different. Your attempts to convince me that she needs fixing are quite cute, however.

I do not require the Witherlord’s power. I require his evil. I know the goal I should seek, but I do not yet have the strength of character to do so. I question, and am weak.

yeah, he isn’t that deep. A villain who views evil as traditional heroes view good.

To answer your earlier question, perhaps tonight or tomorrow.

His ethos is a bit… nonexistent, but his logos makes him compelling. I think his pathos here, while not immediately visible, is also very interesting from a motivational standpoint.

Malevolence opened his mental mouth to reply, then closed it again. It would be, he decided, more evil to allow Ribbon her delusions than to try to manipulate her using the unhealthy nature of her ‘relationship’ with Fog.

Ribbon glared at Malevolence through the silence. I noticed you lived the Plotblade Guardian.

Your weakness is not in your questions. It is in your inability to question. Questioning leads to enlightenment. Enlightenment is the road to dominance. Dominance over the wilds.

itirSp is very interested in character development, especially if characters begin to respect it through this development. It doesn’t want to put other people in its debt, though. It just wants their respect. The biggest examples of this can’t be shown until Uni responds. Ggrrrrr.

Well, he’ll need to wait for three Authors to reply before he can finish the ritual.

I have questioned. Do not think that I have not, simply because I have found the answers.

Malevolence is too suspicious to go along with it. And also too close to his ultimate goal to bite at any possible reward.

It is an Author, by the way.

Perhaps the wrong ones, however. I will be waiting.

Night suddenly kidnaps Inkwell with the starhawk, yanking him over to the alleyway of a crowded city, where a girl in black jeans and a viridian house hoodie stands holding a sword made of gold and black glass. Nearby, someone dressed in a minstrel outfit stands unmoving in a way Inkwell recognizes as being frozen in the passage of Plot as their Author is not present. The girl jumps and points the sword at him. They both suddenly curse over each other, and Night has the starhawk screech every time something foul emerges from their mouths.
——

“*screech!* Who the *screech* are you?!”, Eden yells as some random person with a glowing bird sitting on his shoulder suddenly materializes in the alley. “Uh, sorry, sorry, sorry, I just got abducted by this *screech* bird.  Old you put the *screech* sword down?” Eden takes a deep breath and tries to lay Death Omen on the ground. Instead, it disappears into black smoke, which takes the form of a gold chain necklace with a smoky quartz pendant at her throat. Great. Non consensual accessorization. “Yeah, that’s great. Can everyone but me teleport?” The boy sighs. “Nope. I’ve found myself much less… mobile as of late. Sorry for startling you. Is that your…” “He’s a friend. I don’t know what’s going on with him. There’s these bird people, one kidnaps orphans or something, and now I’ve teleported here where this sword just told me I’m going to die. Absolute garbage. Damocles type *screech*. I’m Eden, by the way.”
——

Inkwell brightens when Eden mentions Damocles. “Blue blossom days, huh? Inkwell. Nice to meet you.” He sticks out his hand to shake hers. She hesitantly accepts. “Exactly. Good music. So, should we join the club of people who get random omens and teleported around against their will?” “What kind of omen?” “Just this immense feeling of dread. That and the sword telling me I’m going to die.” “Have you heard of… Malevolence? The Lost Pages?” “No. I haven’t heard anything.” “Sounds like you’re new here. Well, this place is weird. I don’t have any time to explain, but what you’ve got there looks like a Plotblade, and someone is about to…” he trails off. “This is like the third time today I’ve said this. Evil intern. Summoning, not the good kind. World go boom. It’s stupid.” “Sounds stupid. But that’s the kind of thing that would randomly curse you. Now what?” Inkwell shrugged. “I don’t have any way to travel interdimensionally. My evil twin stole that.”
And just like that, Night is bored. Stop talking to yourself, she tells the Author, sending not one but two nighthawks to transport them to Malevolences lair, since that seems to be where all the characters are.
