The Priest noted. "If it would make him end his tyranny, I would do it." "It does cause strain upon my soul, but that's just a side effect caused by the pull of this realm upon me." The Dreamsmith rubbed his scarred shoulder absently. "The World of Dreams is my native realm. I cannot leave forever. Not if I wish to remain who I am." As Jack drew closer to the source of the singing, he began to be able to make out the words being sung. "Oh great forest light my way, guide me to the lost. Protect their path, withhold your dangers, guide me to the lost." “The thing is, Rebus wants to have his cake and eat it too. He’s quite adept at duplicating cakes, metaphorically speaking, but that deal cannot be twisted to his advantage - frankly, to both me and presumably unmodified Rebus, the idea of my story ending is terrifying. That’s oblivion, cessation of existence - regardless of how allegedly happy.” The false Dreamsmith nodded, picking up the tongs used to extract the strand of soul a conventional item would require. Taking the glowing line from the Dreamsmith’s chest, he began to hammer it and one of the last stored pieces of soul material together. Withholding dangers sounded good - Jack walked closer, ducking under tree branches. “Hello?” he called, figuring that he could be gone before this mysterious singer could actually do him harm. Named absorbed blue light, allowing it to infuse his bones with colour. He began to draft blue luxin, covering his bones in it. Blue luxin was hard, but not tough. Named would've preferred green, but he would use what he could. He tapped Investiture to speed up the process, until he'd grown himself a body of blue luxin, the stuff covering everything except his empty eye sockets. Drafting blue, like all luxin, had an effect on his emotions. Blue brought a sense of clarity and made him more rational, enough that his face expression would've been completely blank had he still had face muscles. A blue spear materialised in Named's dimly glowing hands. Eye sockets staring straight ahead, he tapped pewter and steel, before hurling the spear at Rebus, far faster than any human should've been able to. "Test 1," he mumbled behind his luxin mask. Not like a normal person, but yes - there may actually be more IR, but it’s mostly waste heat from the nanotechnology. Rebus realized his Author had misunderstood who the feruchemist was - though no canon actions would really need changing. Time split, Rebus Narrating the world closer to the true timeline of the Thread, able to fight Named even as he was frozen attacking the third skeleton. The use of so much Narration was regrettable, but this was both efficient and necessary. As the spear coalesced in his adversary’s hands, Rebus - standing calmly in this new timeline - locked eyes with Named for the briefest of moments. His irises were orange - and though this was not for the reason that would be assumed, the conclusion that would be drawn was mostly true. As the spear was sent towards Rebus, shining blackness burst into existence around him. The spear crumbled into chalky powder as it hit the molecularly assembled obsidian, and Rebus smirked. “You were close - I don’t routinely possess the materials to assemble obsidian. Not that a puncture wound would be especially harmful, had I not used the Narration.” On 9/29/2025 at 10:55 PM, Bird Furious said: Symbol stopped when he squeezed her, but it took a second. Keys started tugging them both in a random direction. Symbol, once she realized, helped. Symbol leveled out with the other two, and the liquid covering the group’s helmets evaporated away. The landscape visible beyond was jaw-dropping - a sea of iridescence was laid out before them, almost perfectly flat except for brilliantly shining whirlpools. Rocks - pristine crystal ranging in size from tiny pebbles to what seemed like mountains on the horizon - floated a foot or so above the surface, just as Symbol, Keys, and Rebus were themselves doing. The sky was dark, stars paling in comparison to the light below. And the whole landscape sung, ringing in otherworldly harmony from all around them. The light was not blinding, and the sound was not deafening, but it was everywhere - some who remained in this place might be driven insane by such things, though others could perhaps find beauty in the colors and tones. Rebus - his face serene, head clear of thoughts so as to remain above the flat plane of liquid - seemed to fall into the second category.
