The guardian did not pause as he performed powerful upwards cut that dug through the floor, sending a fissure of green flames towards where Erdikan landed. Erdikan grunted as he fell to the sand, scrambling to get out of the way of the flames.

TwinStorm He/Him Posted January 29 Posted January 29 6 hours ago, DragonHeir said: “That’s exactly the interesting thing,” Rebus said. “I have a functioning core I can study - it’s the altered state that could provide advancements.” Jack frowned. “Maybe you should keep a journal.” - That was Xino’s doing - Coder wanted to go back in time and kidnap the Witherlord during the Dies Luxfrang. “Correct.” Rebus smiled, a few stray pineapples falling out of the sky and past the ship. “I’m uncertain about your universe, but things here are strange enough that people simply begin to accept it.” He paused, looking off into the distance. “Symbol? It would be her, if anybody at all.” - “Don’t worry,” Rebus said. “I wouldn’t be able to do this to you.” The concepts began to flow towards him, the guard a vague presence. “The more character someone has, the more I can siphon from them - and the longer it takes to do anything. Full characters never dissolve - they aren’t merely descriptions but a complete personality.” All that was left of the guard was that very word - the mere impression of it. And then nothing was left at all, the very idea of the guard assimilated and storied away. Rebus grinned, cheerfully walking further down the path. - “That is perfectly understandable, though you’ve done quite a good job here. And yes, I have seen the other drawing.” Rebus waited until the mischievous laughing was done, grinning at the new picture. “That is truly incredible - I am honored to have you as my artist.” “Incidentally, I’d been planning to ask you for it. As you may know, I’ve been creating an empire - a real place would make an excellent addition.” Rebus smiled. “If you really do want a planet, I can make you one out of whole cloth - or you could use your Narration. You see, there are a number of dissidents who hate me and refuse to be brainwashed into forgetting I rule them - as well as the more Thread-aware among my citizens, who think it’s strange they don’t inhabit a blasted wasteland.” Rebus backed up, sword ringing out as he blocked Cricket’s furious strikes. He was too slow; Cricket cut a gash in his leg. Rebus darted forwards, but Cricket slammed the blade away, swinging again and again. Rebus stepped backwards, trying to fend off the blows. His boot slipped on the wet ground. Cricket’s blade hit Rebus’s with a resounding clang. And Rebus tumbled backwards, sprawling on the wet cobblestone. The wind stopped for a moment. The rain paused. Time itself seemed to stop moving. The Thread was holding its breath. Cricket advanced, lowering his blade towards Rebus. That monster . . . he had taken everything from him. His friends, his life, his very soul. He would make him pay. Rebus had outplayed him at every turn, driving Cricket to despair. And now, he held all the cards. "Rebus." he said quietly, spitting his name out with as much venom as possible. "After everything you've done . . . I wouldn't be lying to say you deserved this. I swore to avenge my friends. And now, I finally can. I told you, a long time ago, I'd have my vengeance. And now . . . Rebus, I am your reckoning." He raised the sword, preparing to bring it down upon his enemy. This is for Bat, he thought. You are not the Protagonist. came a voice, a different voice, echoing in his head. "What?" he blinked, pausing. You are not the Protagonist. "I . . ." Cricket frowned. "I know that. What does that have to do with . . . with anything? He's my enemy." You are not the Protagonist. It is not your right, or your responsibility. It is not your duty to slay the Antagonist. Cricket blinked again. "That . . ." He was not the Protagonist. This was true. He glanced at Redemption, pulsing amidst the stone. He'd had to let go, in order to keep Redemption. Let go of his guilt over his friend's death. Why couldn't he do the same for Rebus? Why must he avenge them, if he had moved on? He was not the Protagonist. Another should come, would come and defeat Rebus, defeat the Antagonist. So why stop the natural order of things? If he slew Rebus here, the entire Thread could be imbalanced. He could risk anything. Cricket . . . you have done well. Served valiantly. Now let others come in, finish your work. You've done what you can. You are not the Protagonist. He glanced one more time at Rebus, lying on the stones, and for the first time noticed how pitiful he seemed. Any vestige of former glory had faded from the form before him. Then, he sighed. "If it is what you wish." His fingers loosed on the grip of his sword, and the blade clattered to the stones. He knelt on one knee before Rebus. "I . . . surrender." he said quietly, and bowed his head, awaiting his judgement. 8

Erdikan teleported away. Out of the duel, out of the plane. He appeared on a lonesome, rocky expanse, wind battering him. He had no idea where Ribbon had gotten to, but they weren’t there for the fight. He probably should have marked them, he realized in hindsight. “That,” Erdikan said to himself, “did not work.”
