Beosta squinted into the distance. There— a little hill with a hole in it. That was probably the cave.

it’s an opportunity for him to interrogate her if you feel so inclined *shrug*

I mean I didn't before but now you've convinced me

Shoe looked from Livetha to Beosta. What about you? Where are you from?

“Oh. I’m from… somewhere that looked a lot like this. A farm outside a town.”

Nice, he wrote. Did you like it there?

“Sometimes.” Not often.

Why only sometimes?

She hesitated. “My father… after Mother died, he lost a lot of himself.”

Oh . . . I'm sorry.

“Nothing I couldn’t deal with.”

Liar, whispered the back of her mind.

"So will you take us?" Erif pressed.

“Certainly! … If I can remember how to get there… Why do you want to meet him again?”

"Yes. Yes he can."

Sequence patted Hacob’s hand. “We shall see.”

Huh. If you don't mind me asking, what happened?

Beosta went quiet. Her eyes glazed over and she reached up as if unconsciously, rubbing the ends of her hair between her fingers. She didn’t reply.

Hey, you okay?

She glanced down at the board. Her hand fell back to her side. “Sorry about that. Oh— looks like we’re almost there.”

Well, she clearly wasn't comfortable talking about it, and Shoe would respect that.

He looked at the cave as they walked up. What do you think Famine will be like?

She stopped in front of the entrance. “I don’t know. Hopefully unreasonable.”

I think you might be thinking of Onyx's castle. Onyx's realm is in real space.

"What about you, Yrank? Do you know any games?"

...

I most certainly was. Although I thought his realm was the unreal space

Hacob looked at Sequence with an eyebrow raised. "You. You shall see. I won't be going there! I don't have a death wish."

For your CD or are you just in a mood?

“Mood. Come on.” She stared down the passageway.

Shoe followed her down.

They’d hardly taken three steps when a small voice said from outside, “Hello?”

Shoe whirled around.

A skinny little boy with a dirt-streaked face was watching them from outside, eyes wide. "Do you have any food?"

Beosta pulled out her crossblade (like a crossbow but with little blade disks). "Are you Famine?"

"I'm hungry," the boy offered.

Shoe quickly shoved Beosta's arm down. This might not be Famine.

He slowly walked up to the boy and offered him a muffin.

The boy’s eyes widened and he snatched the muffin, devouring it in three quick bites. “More,” he demanded.
