"Well, if I recall correctly, you take a right at [REDACTED], then the third left after [REDACTED], and don't forget your u-turn, and you should be there!"

Beosta clutched her crossblade harder. “Don’t,” she warned.

The boy’s eyes widened and he snatched the muffin, devouring it in three quick bites. “More,” he demanded.

Shoe gave her a look that said, I'm sure it's fine.

He gave the child another muffin.

This time the muffin vanished almost instantly. The boy grabbed Shoe’s hand, eyes wild by now. “More,” he growled.

“Shoe!” Beosta pulled him back, but couldn’t shake the boy’s grip.

Shoe thought maybe something weird was going on here. Just maybe a little.

He wrenched his hand out of the boy's grasp and took a few quick steps down the stairs.

No stairs, just dirt

The boy snarled and jumped, knocking Shoe over. "More," he snarled. One of Beosta's blades hit him in the neck, spilling blood all over Shoe, but he didn't seem to think much of it.

Shoe wasn't sure what he was more surprised by; the fact that there were not stairs (when he swore there were), or the fact that Beosta just shot a little kid in the neck.

Although . . . Shoe was pretty sure the kid wasn't just a kid anymore . . .

He scrambled to his feet and retreated further down into the space, wiping the blood off his face.

Shoe's in denial lol

The boy jumped at him, but Beosta yelled something, encasing him in a ball of dirt. She rushed over to Shoe, staying between him and the boy’s prison. “You good?”

Shoe nodded. He seemed to be alright.

He looked at the dirt sphere. Oh yeah, narration . . .

He quickly got the pad out. Do you think I could narrate if I just thought about it? I have no idea how this works.

Beosta shrugged. "I don't k-"

The sphere erupted. The boy fell to the ground, green reptilian skin rippling. Was he bigger? He looked bigger. He dodged the stone spear Beosta narrated out of the wall and slithered around her toward Shoe, faster than Beosta had planned for.

Shoe yelped and kicked at that thing attacking him. Desperate, he thought about some of the nearby rocks flying and hitting the creature-

And then the rocks flew and hit the creature.

Oh.

The thing swatted at the stones, buying Shoe precious seconds.

OH!

A portion of the rock ceiling suddenly slammed down onto the monster's tail, pinning it there.

The monster growled and wrenched its tail away. The tail seemed bent and broken, but he didn’t care. Was he bigger than before? No way had he always been six feet tall— long, really.

The monster lounged at Shoe, scoring a large gash across his shoulder and chest before Beosta hurled half the wall at the creature. Snarling, he slithered out and pounced on Beosta.

Shoe cried out in pain and horror as the creature launched itself at Beosta.

NO!

A long, rectangular chunk of wall suddenly slammed into the reptilian monster, crushing its body against the opposite wall. The thing cried out in surprise as blood splattered everywhere.

Beosta, unfazed for the moment, shot every single one of her blades into the creature’s body. It may have been unnecessary, though— the reptile heaved itself to its feet, staggered, and dropped to the ground again.

"Hello!" said Bacon the Bard. "How's your date going?"

GAH! WHAT ARE YOU- IT'S NOT A DATE. Shoe glared at Bacon.

Beosta ignored the bard and pressed the button, making all the blades zoom from the body back to her.

“No. Would you heal Shoe, please? Oh, and I scratched myself.” She tried not to look at the blood, it made her feel all cold inside.

Shoe looked incredulously between the monster bleeding on the floor, Beosta, and Bacon. I . . . genuinely have no idea. Not anymore.

"All right then; be healed!"

A wave of pure healing blasts out in every direction, the narrative power of Bacon's words amplified tenfold!

"Huh," remarked Bacon. "That's odd."

“Oh, right. This place is susceptible to narration. Don’t talk in front of the locals. Makes them skittish.” Beosta paused, then knelt and whispered something to the ground. She stood up a second later, something that resembled a handful of diamonds vanishing into a pocket of her cloak. “Shoe, you good?”

Shoe watched the gashes on his body heal with fascination. What? What's odd?

Was it supposed to die? I mean, yeah? The whole reason we came in here was to defeat Famine . . . which I assume was that thing.
