Eshonai's death definitely shocked me the most, because I had the (probably misremembered) idea in my head that there was a WoB on book 4 or 5 having Eshonai as the flashback character. Can't find it now though

She is, and someone at an Oathbringer signing asked about it, and he confirmed Eshonai flashbacks are for the next book.

The palace sequence took me by surprise the most. Seeing it from Kal's perspective was absolutely powerful.

One of his core needs was just being devasted right in front of him. The sheer pile of names crumbling before him. Brandon just took a freaking stack of people that Kal liked and threw at our faces. I really didn't expect him to make Kal face his beliefs in such a brutal way.

Jezrien by far. When the fused asked Moash if he could kill a god, I never expected the next thing to be "and then he casually walked outside and stabbed the king of heralds who was hanging out on the front porch"

I'm gonna give an honorable mention to losing Beard, Sah, and Noro all in one fell swoop. Even though they were minor characters, the way that scene unfolded, one dying right after the other, was brutal to read.

This ^^ That scene was so brutal and way surprising to me to watch them kill each other.  So much so I was a bit numb when Elhokar bit the bullet.

For main characters Eshonai probably surprised me the most just cause it never crossed my mind that she wouldnt survive especially after the Jasnah, szeth whammy last book

Mine...

on a serious note Amaram - not that he died but more who killed him - the fact Rock did so.

@deadlyDomino - she is, but Brandon has said before that dead characters can have flashbacks. We just weren’t sure how much we believed him.

Eshonai was the most shocking. Did not see that coming - I was wondering how she would survive, not if she would survive.

Elhokar’s death and that whole scene was absolutely gut-wrenching. Poor Kaladin. Poor Sah. Poor Beard. Poor world. Moash you storming cremling.

It was all of them, but the real kicker was how they all died such quick succession. A bit like inviting one friend to have a piece of candy, then everyone thinks it's okay to have one, and then you have none left.

Eshonai. I defenitely thought she would live. Oh, and Jezrien and Graves were unexpected as well. Jezrien felt like he would be major, and I thought Graves would introduce Moash to the Diagram and Mr T, and teach him how to use a Blade.

I feel like I’m basically repeating everyone else here, but Elhokar’s death completely floored me. Everything in that battle was just gettin worse and worse, what with the rescue mission not going to plan, then Aesudan taking in Yelig-nar, then the fight back down the stairs, and then the Singers breaking into the castle, then all of Kaladin’s friends from both sides killing each other, then finally Elhokar about to say the words, only to be struck down by Moash (*insert obligatory storm Moash*)

I was kinda shocked by Eshonai being dead on my first read through of OB, but that was more me misremembering how final her fall in WoR seemed. When I reread WoR after having read OB, her fall seemed much more like she died than I remembered it seeming. Her death didn’t really surprise me as much as Elhokar’s did.

Other deaths didn’t really affect me nearly as much as these two (and the deaths of Kaladin’s friends) did.

Definitely Elhokar.
I was NOT expecting this, and even when the little lighta around him flickered out, I couldn't really comprehend it at first.
It felt like a knife in the back.

I wasn't surprised about Eshonai though. I remembered how she fell into the chasm in WoR and a WoB that said there could be flashback books for characters who are already dead, and I kinda figured.

I was so surprised by the deaths in OB that I still feel disbelief. Eshonai and all Kaladin's friends and Elhokar in Kholinar. I am holding out hope that Eshonai makes a comeback. I don't care how contrived it is. There have been lots of undead characters of characters I do not like. To balance the scales, Eshonai should become undead because I like her.

For my part Jezrien. Elhokar has been an expected death from me for a while. Like an expected punch in the side. Unfortunate but also anticipated. Sort of a, “let’s get this over with” mentality.

Jezrien on the other hand was a bit more of a surprise. That sucker was both unexpected and full of ramification.

Eshonai. Well... I’m not sure we’ve seen the last of her and I don’t mean just flashbacks so I’m not sure she counts. Not too stuck on her either so.  /shrug :)

Graves...  ehhh.

None. Which is a point of contention for Sanderson for me.

Jezrien and Elkohar we're both peripheral characters and I didn't have any emotional investment.

Eshonai, I admit I had hopes for in future novels though her death felt way premature to have a lasting impact. They should have let her achieve something important before killing her.

While Jezrien's death took me by surprise, I expected Elhokar to die. What surprised me was how hard it hit me. I didn't care for Elhokar much before OB (guess I'm not alone), but him being on the brink of saying the first oath trying to save his little son... *wipesawaytear*

How can you be so heartless?

Like, why would that be something to cheer for?

:) I didn't cheer. I thought it was quite sad, but I didn't hate Moash for killing Elhokar. I thought he could still be a good guy and rejoin Bridge 4 up until Moash killed Jezrien. Then I was sad for Moash and the probability he would never rejoin Bridge 4. I certainly like Moash a lot more than Dalinar.

Eshonai did accomplish something. She caused the Everstorm, and led the Parshendi into Odiums hands. Which is why she is so tragic. She basically was a hero her own life, but died a villain just to save her people.

I think that is quite harsh. I didn't think she was the villain. I thought Venli was the villain. Eshonai was enslaved.

Eshonai, completely. It was so sudden and so jarring that the wind just went out of me. Elhokar's death was the most tragic, but it wasn't surprising. Jezrien's feels like it has the most impact going forward, but there are so many mysteries surrounding that dagger that the death itself becomes a little muddled.
