Day 7 - History Has Its Eyes On You

Axies was standing in front of him. “Hello, little brother.” Seixa couldn’t respond. It felt like his mouth had been clamped shut by an invisible hand. “You’ve failed me. There are still Spiked in the city. Why aren’t they dead yet? You know the only way is to kill them all.”

With an effort, Seixa wrenched his mouth open. “They are all dead! We’ve killed five of them! Are you telling me that six out of sixteen possibilities were Spiked?”

“Possibly. You know the Spiked can convert others to their cause, as well.” Seixa smote his forehead. Of course they had converted people! Why hadn’t he thought of that? He started to consider who had had the opportunity to spike someone, and who had been vulnerable. Most of his subjects stayed in groups, so he could eliminate almost all…

Axies was still talking.“Or, possibly I’m saying that sixteen out of sixteen are Spiked.”

“What?” Seixa said incredulously. “That’s impossible. I’ve seen their bodies. No spikes there.”

“Maybe you just weren’t looking hard enough…” Axies swept out of the small building they were in, on his way to the town square, where they’d buried the fallen. Seixa followed.

His brother gestured for him to dig.

“Aren’t you going to help?” Seixa inquired.

“Don’t be stupid. I’m dead.” Axies replied curtly. Shrugging, Seixa picked up the first headstone to get at the grave beneath it- Millie’s. As he dug, he glanced over at the inscription-

She whittled away all of her stack

So went into the woods to fill up her pack

We waited all day but she didn’t come back

(The wolf told us she had a heart attack)

Not entirely accurate, but close enough. She’d been killed by Edrab, when they’d surprised each other in the night. Millie was a good sheriff. Seixa couldn’t remember the last time she’d arrested someone and they hadn’t confessed. She couldn’t have been Spiked… could she?

Finally, he reached the body. It was still largely intact, except for the more delicate tissues. Worms had invaded the eyes, and the sockets were empty and glaring.

Axies pointed at the head. “Look.”

Seixa looked again. It wasn’t exactly the kind of thing he wanted to stare at, but Axies had asked him, so he did. Wait… was that metal in the eye? Gingerly, he reached in, and then stopped himself. After Stinky’s death, he didn’t need to do that anymore.

He burned iron. It was still unfamiliar, and slightly awkward, but he was skilled enough to do a basic Pull. The line to the metal was much more thin than it ought to be- it really was a Hemalurgic spike. Flaring the ferric, he yanked on the line with as much strength as he could muster. The spike quivered for a moment, and then flew at him, slicing open his hand as he tried to catch it. Seixa frowned, and tapped some gold to speed the healing of the cut. That spike did not look clean, and an infection was one thing he did not want to have to deal with.

Axies cleared his throat noisily. “Well?” he said. “Put it in.”

Seixa looked down at the spike, then attempted to look at his only remaining eye with his only remaining eye. He failed.

“Are- are you sure?” he stammered. “I mean, if this isn’t really Hemalurgic, it’ll kill me. I don’t have enough gold stores to heal that.”

“I’m sure. Do it.”

“Alright then…” Grimacing, Seixa placed the spike in front of his eye, and then drove it in with his other hand. It hurt. A lot. And he couldn’t see anymore, except for the blue lines his right eye had grown accustomed to. He wasn’t dead, so it must have worked. He now, theoretically, had the power of allomantic steel. But did he really? Seixa had never been able to just accept it on faith; Hemalurgy still wasn’t an area he was comfortable with.

He pulled out a vial of all the metals, downed it, and then flicked a coin high into the air. Yes… there was a new reserve. He burned the metal, and pushed the line corresponding to the clip. It didn’t come back down.

After playing around with steel for a bit longer, Seixa finally realized the implications of his new ability. Millie had supposedly been Twinborn, yet she’d had spikes for her powers. Did all the other dead “Twinborn” have them as well?

He turned to Axies.

Axies grinned. “Find out for yourself.”

No one was killed!

Well, haha. I found more lerasium. If I duralumin soothe everyone, I will for sure know who the last spiked player is, and then I can ascend!

Also, seeing as there aren't too many players left, is it possible that the day cycles could be reduced to 24 hours? I'm fine with whatever, but I don't want to force the game to drag on for other players too much.

I didn't have enough actions, since moving cancels my bendalloy, and I hadn't used my second bead of lerasium at that point. But I stored a bunch of iron, so now I can get over there pronto.

Also, during the next night, your room has an atium spike so you could look for an item to try and convert extra people!

So... Araris...  Am I right to assume that you would rather me not mess with votes as well?

There's an aluminium spike where i am as well if you are interested. Alternatively, I could just give you my steel spike :P

Posted

So, wait, SD is evil, Araris has 3 beads of lerasium and Burnt is not interfering with votes? Is that all or am I missing a subtext here?

Posted

hmm im debating that right now. Thing is, I'm pretty sure there's no way,to protect against a conversion spike so,I'll be rather annoyed if you spike araris before he kills you...

eh, I guess araris also can't soothe votes if we don't vote, so I guess ultimately its up to him.

GM, does soothing multiple people take more than one turns Or just one turn? Either way, I don't think I'm very intent on letting 3 beads of lerasium fall into the wrong hands.

Actually, on the contrary, I'm far more suspicious of SD asking for votes. So, I'll just hang on to mine.

Normally it would take more than one action, but Araris is a mistborn savant with duralimin. His savantness means his one action soothes two people. The Duralamin enhancement on top of that means he can soothe three people with one action. I could only currently soothe two people.

Why would me asking for votes be suspicious?

LG19: Night 8 - One Last Time

That evening, Tilion walked in on Laurelin searching through her belongings. “Ah-hah!” she exclaimed, pulling out a beautiful silver dagger.

He stared at her. “Lady Laurelin?”

She turned sharply. “Tilion! I-” she stopped. How was she supposed to explain this?

“What- why- Why are you dressed like that?”

She looked down at herself. The dark grey battle gear was definitely unsuitable to a lady, and the hooded cloak probably didn’t make it any prettier on the eyes. “The Spiked are still out there, somewhere. I think it’s time to put a stop to them. One last time.”

His mouth opened and closed a couple of times. “I didn’t know you were a warrior,” he managed at last.

“It’s not exactly the kind of thing one goes around announcing.”

“No, I suppose not. Well, then.” He took a deep breath. “May I join you? I don’t know how much I can be of service, but this needs to be stopped, and I want to help.”

He’ll see Telperion, she thought. But- It would be nice to have some help. I still don’t really know the town.

She nodded reluctantly. “As long as you do what I tell you to do, okay?”

He nodded.

“Then get some darker clothes on. We’ll leave at sunset.”

Just before Tilion closed the door, Laurelin asked, “Oh- Anything happen today in the square?”

He shook his head. “Not a single peep from anyone. Everyone’s holed up, waiting for the storm.”

And with that, he left her to her thoughts.

No one was lynched!

Sunset of Night 8

Tilion came back promptly, dressed in appropriate clothing, and even with a dagger in his hand. He hesitantly held it up. “Do you think I should bring it? I’m not very good with weapons...”

“Bring it. Never know how it might be useful.” Laurelin pulled up the hood of her cloak. Sunset hadn’t quite occurred, but it was getting close. She could feel it. “Let’s get going, while there’s still light.”

Tilion frowned, but didn’t question her (fairly shoddy) logic. They exited the inn together, managing to get out without anyone seeing them, and Laurelin led him to a place she’d spotted previous nights, a warehouse which was basically abandoned at this point, no one having claimed it after the owner died. Laurelin hadn’t even been sure of his name, ever, only his smell.

They sat together in silence, waiting for the light to fade. Laurelin felt when the change happened.

Telperion pulled her hood down more, trying to hide her face as much as possible. After a few more minutes, she whispered, “Let’s go.”

She rose to leave. But Tilion whispered harshly, “Wait!”

She turned to look back at him. And he saw her silver hair, the hair of Sumath’s killer. They both froze.

Night has ended! Please do not post for the next 24 hours.

Sorry, forgot to mention this before now. The writeup will be somewhat late tonight, as I only just got home and Phatt is still gone somewhere, I think. I'll try to make the wait worth it.

Conclusion: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story

Tilion seemed to find his voice. “You! It’s you! You killed Sumath!”

She shook her head. “I didn’t, Tilion. He was already dying when I found him. All I managed to hear were his last words. ‘The smell, the smell, the smell’, if you’re curious. And then you found me, and ran off without giving me the chance to explain myself...”

He frowned, clearly unwilling to accept her story. “What have you done with Lady Laurelin?”

“I am Lady Laurelin, Tilion. Well, kind of.”

He looked no less confused, and she sighed. “Laurelin and I... it’s like we’re two halves of the same person, kind of. I have all of her memories, for instance. I remember meeting Mayor Axies and the nice talk we had with him, for instance. But I don’t have her personality. I’m what she is at night. Kind of. It’s complicated. Basically, call me Telperion, okay? I’m Laurelin’s alter ego.”

“...Right. But... you killed Sumath! I saw you!”

“If I had really killed Sumath, would I still be here trying to talk some sense into you?”

“Yeah, but... Who are you?”

“I’m... I’m a traveller. I journey, passing through, helping out, learning. I do what I can. Sometimes that means killing.” Yes, that’s a Doctor Who reference. Couldn’t resist.

“But not here. I would not kill a single member of this town for all the world.” She stared into his eyes, hoping he’d see how sincere she was.

He frowned, but nodded. “I won’t trust you. But I’ll follow your lead.”

She sighed. “If I wanted you dead, you would be, okay? Just rest assured that I don’t.”

It didn’t seem to make him any more comfortable with the situation, but he followed without further protest, and Telperion turned her attention to guiding them through the misty streets and leading them into a particular building she’d had her eye on for a while.

ArSel gasped. Was that what he thought it was? Reverently, he pulled the bead of lerasium out from where it had been hidden in the shadows. Another one? Harmony has truly blessed me!

He stared at the bead, turning it over and over in his hand. How does this help, though? How do I find the Spiked?

The bead stopped rolling around his hand. What if I just... pull the Spikes out? You can’t normally, I know, but with three lerasium beads? Surely it’d be possible.

He took a deep breath. Then he dropped the bead into a vial of all the metals, and downed it in a gulp. And there it was. The lerasium.

He burned Iron. Then duralumin. Then lerasium. And he pulled.

Jala crept through the darkness, searching for the glint of shiny things.

There! She stalked over to Star Thief’s hoard. The girl was asleep in the middle of it.

She stomped, the loud crack! of the boot against the pavement waking Star Thief up with a start.

“You killed Verre, didn’t you? You’ve been watching us all along, trying to get us to turn on each other while you just look innocent and cute. Well, I won’t stand for it anymore.” She grabbed a couple of coins from her pouch.

“Shiny!”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if you Spiked yourself just because Spikes are shiny,” she said thoughtfully, then shook her head.

“Sorry. But I have to do this.”

But before she could Push the coins at Star Thief, she stopped. Star Thief had just pulled out... “What is that? Where did you get it?”

“Shiny!” Star Thief repeated brightly. The hammer shone silver in her hand.

“You have been killing, then,” Jala said grimly. “There’s no other purpose for something like that.” She Pushed the coins into Star Thief’s body.

The girl convulsed, once, twice, then fell to the floor. “Shiny...” she said weakly.

Jala’s heart hurt, but she knelt down to check for spikes, as her duty. But there were no spikes, only four bloody holes. Four? But I only shot two coins... Then that was replaced by more immediate concerns. The roof creaked alarmingly, and then slowly started moving towards the town center.

She tapped Zinc. Or, at least, she tried. But something was wrong. Nothing was happening! It was like her powers had just... stopped working? She tried burning Pewter. It wasn’t as strong as it had become since she’d burned lerasium, but at least it still worked. And the other Allomantic powers seemed fine...

She shook her head. She couldn’t afford to worry about that right now. She had to get out! She ran towards the nearest door, stepping over Star Thief’s corpse with a last passing glance.

She collided head-first into someone else, throwing her to the floor. When she managed to pick herself up, she saw that Myte was lying down, too. “Are you okay? I’m sorry!”

“I’m okay,” he managed. “Do you have any idea what’s happening?”

She shook her head. “Everything’s just... moving.”

The opposite wall was moving, too. Slowly, but it was moving towards them. Jala looked frantically towards the door, then groaned as she saw it was already crushed.

The wall was speeding up now. Jala hoisted Myte off the floor and ran towards the side. Maybe she’d be able to break out somewhere?

She grinned. The supports were made of metal! She doused a vial of metal, moving quicker than she had thought she could, then burned duralumin and steel. She Pushed on the wall with all her might.

Which had the obvious effect of sending her flying backwards to hit the other wall. She groaned, losing consciousness for a moment. Should have practiced more with Steel...

She Pushed again, trying to break through the support. But it was much harder to push on than any other metal she’d tried in the little practicing she had done, oddly, and she seemed to be making no headway. Finally she collapsed to the floor, exhausted, looking across the room to Myte, and mutely shook her head. Harmony, help us. Preservation, preserve us. She repeated the mantra again and again, until the world exploded in a brilliant flash of light.

Telperion held up a hand. She peeked around a pile of crates, and there was Arsel. She couldn’t quite make out what he was doing...

Tilion stuck his head out beneath hers, watching cautiously.

Arsel tilted his head back, drinking a vial of metals. Then he reached out to either side, like he was being stretched apart by two ropes.

Then Telperion’s perspective changed. He wasn’t being pulled apart by two ropes. He was pulling them together.

Small pieces of metal started flying towards him. First the few miscellaneous pens and nails and scraps lying on the floor. The bubble quickly expanded, though. All of the nails were ripped out of the crates in front of her. Then Telperion’s dagger was ripped out of her hand, joining the metals beginning to cluster around Arsel’s body.

She turned around quickly, eyes widening, and pushed Tilion with her to the ground.

But as she did so, two small things, moving too fast to see, emerged from Tilion’s heart. She gasped as they pierced all the way through her and exited the other side.

“Telperion!” Tilion gasped. “Are you okay?”

She fell to the ground completely. “Lie down,” she whispered. “Get out of the way of the Ironpull.”

He lay beside her, face full of concern. “But what happened?”

“I... wasn’t quite... fast enough,” she gasped, breaths coming harder now. “Tilion, listen. You have to go.”

“I’m not leaving you,” he said mulishly.

She ignored him. “Someone needs to know about all of this. I’m dying, Tilion. Leave me. Leave here...” she took a deep shuddering breath. Her body was dying, but she needed to say this. “Continue my work. Travel. Help wherever you can... Tell my story. Tell the story of this village and what happened here.”

She reached out and grabbed his arm, or tried to. “And make sure it never happens again.”

She smiled at him. “Go...”

He didn’t go, so she sighed.

Then she slowly, peacefully, closed her eyes, and stopped breathing.

She heard him sob. “No. Telperion, Laurelin, no!” She remained still. And at last, she heard him slowly move away, and took a deep, slow breath. Well, at least the boy has some sense, she thought.

She opened her eyes again, watching objects fly over her head. More, and more, and more, nails and pins and steel girders and hammers and rivets and screws, chairs and wrought iron gates and roof beams and glitter. And spikes. Every spike that had ever been placed into a “Twinborn”, from every grave of every person who’d ever lived in the town since the Catacendre.

They streamed past, blurring together as her vision went in and out of focus.

Then she seemed to see a light. Is this it? I’ve often wondered what the afterlife felt like...

But she was still most definitely in pain, so she couldn’t be dead yet. Right?

The glowing wasn’t uniform, she saw. It seemed to be emanating from ArSel’s direction.

The light grew so bright that she wanted to close her eyes, but she kept them open. And so she was the only one to see ArSel when he rose out of the huge ball of metal, glowing brighter and brighter, until he finally Ascended in a burst of glory.

She smiled. As ill-advised as it might be to have ArSel become Preservation, particularly so soon after being Spiked many times over, it was a beautiful sight. The torch was passed, her time was over, and she was beholding the most wonderful thing she’d ever seen.

And so she died smiling, and went to the next great adventure.

Other Notes

Phattemer will probably be on in the morning to do a final Axies RP.

I left it up to Burnt and Mark whether they survived or not. Technically the other side won, but Jala prayed to Preservation. Perhaps he will be merciful.

The three wielders of harmonium were me, Kipper, and Phatt. Our intended purpose was to cause Harmony, after all.

The reason the spiked won was because Araris was Spiked by his double enhanced ironpull and a triple Mistborn, to be clear. No way village could win at that point.

If you’re reading the GM doc, you don’t need to read past the “end of talk” heading, really. Past that is almost entirely just writeups and boring stuff.

Afterpost (at least mine) will be coming in a few days once I recover from everything that’s been happening.

Great game, everyone!

I like the Hamilton reference.

Thanks for the kill role, El. I only wish I could've gone fully ballistic with it though. :P
