The Stormlight Archive: A Pocket Companion

So April 30 is apparently Independent Bookstore Day, and at least one of the participating stores (Tattered Cover) will carry something called The Stormlight Archive: A Pocket Companion to the Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. It is a "fan collectible," which I understand to mean that it was compiled by fans, but I still think it would be cool to check if your local participating bookstore will carry it, and then snag a copy if that's the case.

Here's the full description from Tattered Cover's Independent Book Day page:

The Stormlight Archive: A Pocket Companion to the Way of Kings and Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

A limited-edition hardcover book of trivia from The Stormlight Archive epic fantasy series written by Brandon Sanderson. The Stormlight Archive is an ongoing epic fantasy, planned as a ten-book series. Included content is drawn from the first two series’ books which are the only books currently available. Compiles interesting details, character profiles, deeper descriptions of the landscape, maps, illustrations, unanswered questions to ponder until the next book. This is a fan collectible as the content would not be gathered in this way anywhere else. (Free item. Limited to one per customer.)

Interesting.  There's a store about 45 minutes from me on that map, might be worth the trip.

It looks like it comes for free as part of the promotional material. If it's like Free RPG Day, then any store that is listed as participating on the website will at least have some copies to give away.

The closest place to me is opening that very day, so it'll likely be a madhouse. I still intend to go. :)

Heridfel:

Trying to quote you but computer is being a bum right now.

Ditto! Store is opening up down the block from me, on the 30th. Don't suppose the shop you're going to is called East City?

Indeed! I'm not quite as close as you, but as close as you are, that's no surprise.

Dang! I wish I were in DC for the East City opening! I'll be in Mobile, Alabama that day and as I've discovered from the Independent Book Day link...there isn't a single one in Alabama (or Hawaii or Wyoming). All other states are represented though. Sigh.

  • 5 weeks later...

The bookstores in Pittsburgh were out as soon as they opened apparently. I accidentally slept in, drove the 45 min to Sewickley, got there at 10:20ish (they opened at 10:00) but they were all gone. Apparently they only had 3. I called the only other bookstore in the Burgh on the list. They were also out.  The guy on the phone got a lot less pleasant after I asked what I was looking for.  I had the feeling that one of us had just thrown a fit at him a few minutes before.

If all the bookstores got that few of them, they are going to be hard to get a hold of.

Anyone get one? what's all in it?  SOOO CURIOUS!

Didn't even know about the day or the book in advance but I randomly decided to go to a local used bookstore (San Francisco's Green Apple Books) and managed to snag a copy. It's very short, maybe thirty pages. It's illustrated with art from the books and has single pages of information on the focus characters for the first five books, locations, flora, fauna, spren and the Radiants.

I haven't had time to read it all but one thing of interest is that when it describes the ten orders (WoR spoiler)

it suggests that Nale's Skybreakers are in fact real Skybreakers, not just a group sharing the name

Oh, and I found out about it because they made an announcement that anyone interested in 'young adult author Brandon Sanderson' should inquire when purchasing and when I did, they assumed the I was picking it up for a child at home. I'm guessing they're familiar with Reckoners and maybe Alcatraz (if not their appeal to all ages) but not his other works. Ah well.

Did you inform them so they could sell more of his books in the future? :-P

Nice find, though. If it's allowed, can you post the bit that says that so we can see the wording?

Yes I did, though they already had some nice used copies of his works on the shelves so it's probably just the person who made the announcement and handed me the booklet that didn't know about them.

Anyhow, the bit in question:

Order of Skybreakers: The second order, following Nale, had the ability to bind Gravitation and Division. Szeth is an incipient Skybreaker.

What does incipient Skybreaker mean? I am not sure I understand the syntax being used here, so help someone?

Incipient means to be in the initial or beginning stage. Older and not oft used term.

Weltall, I'm not completely convinced by that wording. It's sounds to me like past tense, meaning they previously followed Nale, but another group could actually be following him now, in his madness. Could go either way really. Thanks for posting it!

Got my copy this morning. The bookstore only had 5 copies.

For the price this is an amazing book with some nice illustrations.

It even has the 17th Shard website in the front of the book.

There's the name I recognize! Haha, nice seeing you there. Here's to hoping Brandon comes through on his next tour and we can hang out in line again, lol.

Got it at my local bookstore for free and it's worth at least twice that much!

Real talk, it's nothing special. Some re-used art, recaps of known events, one page descriptions of the main characters... Eh.

Here's the thing that irks me though: it is NOT pocket sized. It's about an inch wider than the back pockets on my pants.
