Songs That Make You Think of Stormlight Archive

Recommended Posts

I was listening to Pandora the other day, and a song came on "Don't Stop" by Innerpartysystem. I'm not really sure what prompted my train of thought on it after it started playing, but I began thinking that it was an interesting commentary on how people act if they become famous or influential and don't really know how to handle it*. That lead - oddly - to thinking about what kind of culture that would lead to(probably the result of some of my college classes). Anyway, that lead me to thinking that it had some striking similarities to the Light Eyes' court culture, and the abuses we've seen from them so far throughout the series.

So, I'm curious: Are there any songs that make you think of Stormlight Archive, or any specific aspect of it?

* I prefer that as the interpretation of what the song is about, rather than thinking the lyrics are actually how someone feels about life. However, I haven't actually done any background research on the song itself.

Also, I apologize if this has already been done. I didn't see it when I checked.

@ Mirahound Dance with the Devil is very cool an so Kaladin. WoK Kaladin, and perhaps a Kaladin who does try for one last escape attempt, which would be then 'dancing with the devil tonight'

I found two great fanmixes I enjoyed. One mix for Shallan: breaking open the dense blue air . And this moody selection for Adolin, post WoR: Golden Boy

I've got a few, mostly from being in a religious choir during a re-read of The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance:

Let Zion in Her Beauty Rise, an LDS hymn, for a simple, silly reason: It has the word, 'heralds.' The 2nd verse is the relevant one:

Ye heralds, sound the golden trump
To earth's remotest bound.
Go spread the news from pole to pole
In all the nations round:
That Jesus in the clouds above,
With hosts of angels too,
Will soon appear, his Saints to save,
His enemies subdue.

Then also Sine Nomine (For All the Saints) by Ralph Vaughn Williams, for its imagery reminiscent of Vorin afterlife doctrine / Kaladin and Dalinar on the Shattered Plains:

2. Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might;
Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight;
Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
4. O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold,
Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,
And win with them the victor’s crown of gold.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
8. And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
Steals on the ear the distant triumph song*,
And hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

*Though, now that I think of it, 'distant triumph song' reminds me of the Parshendi. Not the kind of victory song the Alethi want to hear.

Last, for now, is the Battlestar Galactica cover of All Along the Watchtower:

"There must be some way out of here" said the joker to the thief
"There's too much confusion; I can't get no relief
"Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth
"None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited", the thief he kindly spoke
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late".

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.
Outside in the distance, a wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

A lot of power metal songs makes me think of the Stormlight Archive. They are usually about fantasy worlds and take me to a place somewhere far beyond my reality (have a cookie if you know the reference without having to look it up) and I usually just default to the Stormlight Archive when thinking about things like that, because it is my favorite fantasy series. In the future I would love to hear a band come out with a song based entirely on the series, but I think that I can wait for Blind Guardian to do something like that.

It is "Through the fire and flames", isn't it?

"And on the wings of a dream, so far beyond reality..."

EDIT: But I don't want your cookie! I will call the Light Alley(if there is such a thing) if you try to force it upon(or into) me.

"Had enough" by Breaking Benjamin sounds like what the heros would tell Sadeas and Amaram, I mean, just look at the chorus:

"You had to have it all,

Now had you had enough?

You greedy little bastard, you

Who get what you deserve.

When all is said and done,

I will be the one

To leave you in your misery

And hate what you have become!"

I've actually made a few Stormlight fanmixes, one for Kaladin and one for Dalinar. That said, I've got a few other Stormlight songs bouncing around that haven't managed to make their way into a fanmix yet.

Shallan:

Flashback Shallan: Plant Life by Owl City

I've been longing for,
Daisies to push through the floor,
And I wish that plant life would grow all around me,
So I won't feel dead anymore.

Losing Jasnah: The Lonely - By Christina Perri

I'm the ghost of a girl that I want to be most.
I'm the shell of a girl that I used to know well.

There's a few that I like for Kalarin too, though some of these you might be able to twist into the Stormlight OTP of your choice if you squint right. I just like Kalarin beause it's adorable and easy to inflict upon Kalarin-shipping friends.

Silver Lining by Hurts
The rain's going to follow you wherever you go.
The clouds go black and the thunder rolls
And I see lightning. I see lightning.
When the world surrounds you, I'll make it go away
Paint the sky with silver lining.

Safe Place To Land by Çhristian Burghardt
When you're at 10,000 feet
No parachute, you got my hand
I'm always gonna be
Your safe plance to land

What if this storm ends?
And I don't see you
As you are now
Ever again

A perfect halo
Of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against
The planet's last dance
