The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon

  • What happens if you Soulcast an Awakened object into something strange or non-Awakenable? (if it's possible, but Soulcasting living people is, so…)

I don't think this is possible much for the same reason you can't lash someone wearing shardplate; the investiture inside the object interferes with the soulcasting in the same way that the shardplate's investiture interferes with the lashings, and presumably soulcasting. Of course, this might depend on how much investiture the object has in it...Well, we have WoB that Nightblood is more powerful than a shardblade, and Nightblood took 1000 breaths to forge IIRC. Giving the assumption that Nightblood is roughly three times as powerful as a shardblade (which seems reasonable to me, given nightblood's capabilities), a shardblade has the equivalent investiture of 333ish breaths. I'm guessing that the ability to be lashing proof would extend to about 150ish or more breaths, and soulcasting to 100ish breaths, or roughly 1/3 strength of a shardblade. This is all speculation of course, especially the last part, so take this with a grain of salt. Anyways, I'm also curious as to what happens to an awakened object with a low enough amount of breaths to not interfere with the soulcasting, but I'm reasonably sure that with a high enough amount of breaths you couldn't soulcast the object at all.

Brandon has frequently been asked if Hoid is a Shard of Adonalsium.  However, I have never seen anyone ask, "Was Hoid ever a Shard of Adonalsium".

Brandon said that Hoid is "something else entirely". I know, it's said in present time, but what makes me think, he wasn't a Shardholder, too, is the "something else."

Also Brandon said that Hoid would be tempted most by Endowment, what makes me think, that he hadn't been a Shardholder. As far as we know, Endowment is alive (that would mean that his/her Shardholder is alive, too, wouldn't it?).

I could imagine (from my gut) that Hoid was Adonalsium's "Holder" though it's hard to believe that he could survive the Shattering. That could explain why he's gathering pieces from the Shards.

Given that the Hoid we know is really Hoid and not Midius.

I've a new question, I haven't seen asked before:

"Can the persons holding a Shard of Adonalsium let it go and take another Shard? Or could two of them exchange their Shards?"

If a group of scholars learned Parshendi songs and trained Alethi soldiers to sing them in combat, how would the Parshendi react to that?

Would the Parshendi recognize it as insincere mimicry?

Would a victorious force of Parshendi show mercy if the defeated Alethi began singing "Mercy?"

What if a small group of unarmed Alethi traveled to the Parshendi camp singing, "Peace", or some variation to express nonhostile intentions, actually made the journey? How would the Parshendi react?

EDIT: Moar Questions.

Does Stormlight change based on the gemstone it is stored in? I seem to recall, and this could be inaccurate, but the majority of the Stormlight Szeth utilized came from sapphires. Is this purely coincidental? I also seem to recall that the Knights Radiant glowed different colors. Is this due to different Orders using different "wavelengths" of Stormlight?

Yes. The Parshendi songs come about from listening to rhythms of the universe, or something. If the Alethi just started singing, it wouldn't match up with what the Parshendi hear.

One hopes they'd hear them out regardless of whether they were singing a song or not. Dalinar could go in Shardplate over a chasm alone (with bodyguards on the chasm behind him) and see if any Parshendi approach to talk.

No, all Stormlight is the same. The gem color just filters it, as apparently do the glyphs on Shardplate.

We have this WoB:

Q: As far as I can tell, in SA, we have seen three different lights: the stormlight, the amberlight in the flashbacks, and the dark light in the stone.  Do those correspond to the three Shards?

A: No, the amberlight is more a function of...it’s no different than the stormlight.

Q: So, you see that in a storm?  Like when gems gather that in the storm?

A: That amberlight is more related to…so, no…you are not seeing something other than stormlight.  That is like saying that stormlight in a topaz is a different color than stormlight in a sapphire.  It’s not different colors; you’re just seeing it filtered through something. The dark light of the, um, the gemstone that Szeth was given is indeed something different and distinct.

Q: Voooiidlight?

A: Yes, it is related to a different shard.  How about that?  (clearly not a confirmation of “voidlight”)

Couple of questions I've had sitting around for a while:

Do the enhancement metals affect only Allomancy, only the Metallic Arts, or all types of Investiture? And can the external ones affect Invested objects?

Is the fact that Surgebinding can affect humans but Allomancy can't have to do with Scadrians counting as Invested objects because of the power of Preservation and Ruin inside them? If no, do Rosharians also have a portion of a, or multiple Shards' power?

Are all the Shardholders (sans Harmony) from Yolen, and are they all (sans Harmony again) the original holders?

Does Feruchemical Spinning purely affect probability?

Given that the Lashings infuse the target with Stormlight, if another Surgebinder was Lashed, could they use that Stormlight, or would it be inaccessable, like metalminds?

Could you Forge an unSnapped Scadrian so that they had already snapped?

Could a piece of metal affected by the Magnetism Surge still be affected by Allomancy?

Why are there so many magic systems on Sel, when other Shardworlds only have one per Shard plus balance magics, and does it have to do with the state of Shadesmar there?

When Vin absorbed the mists, why couldn't she detect new sources of power for the undiscovered metals?

If an Electrum Misting moved quick enough, or was also a Zinc Ferring, could they use it as a type of precognition to change the future, like a poor man's atium?

There is no Magnetism Surge that we know of.

There is only one magic system on Sel, with different manifestations for different regions. And for your "other Shardworlds", the only planet we know of that behaves like that is Scadrial, which is hardly enough to find a pattern from.

IDK.

Explain.

In order:

Oh. I thought there was. Would've been cool.

Ah, that makes much more sense. What I meant was that we've seen one magic system per Shard, with the possibility of more balance systems if the Shards are opposites like Preservation and Ruin.

Shame.

Electrum allows you to see a shadow of what's going to happen to you in a few seconds. I was wondering if that could be changed; if you see yourself being hit by an arrow, you move differently to avoid that happening.

1.Well, there's still one unknown surge. It could be Magnetism, for all we know.

2.You might be interested in the conversation going on here.

4. Oh, okay. I'm pretty sure that's how it works, but I could certainly be wrong.

I might be going to the Huntington Beach signing on 3/5.

what are the top 3 questions I should pose to Brandon? the list on page 1 seems to be a bit out of date to me.

Oh man, picking just three? Difficult. We've had some of the questions in this thread answered, so page one is a bit out of date, though feel free to ask all the questions on it if you can anyways :P. Over 80% of the questions on page one are still unanswered. I don't blame the admins for not keeping it updated; we've got over 40 pages of questions! It'd be a huge undertaking to aggregate them all.

Uh, three big ones that we haven't had answered and aren't likely to be RAFOed...

Try these:

  • Can you bond with more than one Honorblade?
  • Is Stormlight a gaseous form of Investiture on Roshar?
  • Is Szeth's black sphere permanently infused with the black Light? If it isn't, is there an opposite to highstorms that infuses it?

They shouldn't be RAFO bait, though others might disagree.

If you actually get a chance to ask a ton more, you might try some of these (and don't forget page one!):

  • Each world seems to have a material that Investiture 'sticks' easily to. Warbreaker had life, Roshar has gems, Mistborn had metal. What word should we use for it?
  • The Metallic Arts are from Preservation and Ruin. There's three magic systems there, but there's only one magic system from Devotion and Dominion. Does the number of magic systems on a planet have something to do with how well the Intents of the Shards on it 'mesh'?
  • How and when is the type of Misting you become determined? Is it possible to be naturally born an Atium Misting after the Ascension?
  • Would a Parshman who received a Breath become a Parshendi?
  • Is the woman bordering the chart at the back of TWoK intended to represent Cultivation?
  • Would a Hemalurgic spike steal one or two Surges? Or would it steal the spren bond?
  • If two Mistborn of the same-strength had a Mistborn child, would the child be weaker Allomantically?
  • How would Hemalurgic decay affect a Shardblade stolen with Hemalurgy?
  • Does Shardplate regrow by Soulcasting air to metal, or does it covert Stormlight directly into invested metal?
  • Is Stormlight the gaseous form of Investiture on Roshar?

@GHM

Don't make the mistake I did at one of his signings....

Me: Mind if I ask some questions?

Brandon: Not at all.

Me: Do you have time for three?

Brandon: Sure.

Me: Wait, did the two count?!

Brandon: *wolfish grin*

Edit: Stupid phone auto correct...

Why don't the Parshendi just set the bridges on fire instead of going for the bridgemen??

Going for the bridgemen is a more effective strategy.  The only way I can think of them trying to light them on fire is flaming arrows.  The thing though is that if a flaming arrow were to hit a bridge, it wouldn't do much, the bridges are pretty solidly built.  Even multiple hits I just don't see being that big of a problem, especially if the Alethi know rudimentary ways of fire-resiting the bridges.  It's not like the bridge would burst into flame with a single hit, it is hard to get big pieces of wood to burn instead of just charring.  There is a reason when starting a fire you start with small twigs and then build up to logs.

So long story short, it wouldn't do enough damage better to just kill the guys before the bridge gets to the chasm.

What I don't understand is why don't they have groups of parshendi jump the chasm and chop down the bridgemen before they set the bridges? They can't defend themselves so it would be quick work taking out the crews. From the way it's described in the books, it seems like the bridges run pretty far ahead of the main force so just wait until they are about 30 yards from the chasm, jump it, and slaughter them before the army can get there. This would force the Alethi to start sending escorts with the crews which would be even more easy targets for the archers to take out.

In WoA: Human the Koloss has to discover the Trust is empty before Ruin notices that there is no Atium. If Atium is the physical manifestation of Ruin's Investiture, when it is burnt it is returned to the source: Ruin. So Elend burning all the Atium was in the end a net gain for Ruin. But why was he unaware of it returning? Is the amount so miniscule that it was unnoticeable?

Also, if there is more Presentation than Ruin in every human, and the above question is correct, why was the Vin v. Ati reaction so balanced? Should not Ruin have come out on top? Or is this simply a matter of polarised Intents being incompatible?
