natc Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Is ralkalest, the unforgeable metal from The Emperor's Soul, the solid form of either Dominion or Domination's body? Domination doesn't exist. And it has little reason to be.
Grond Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Domination doesn't exist. And it has little reason to be. Sorry, I meant Devotion. 1

SmurfAquamarineBodies he/him Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Is there a limit to the amount of physical damage a Divine Breath can heal? For example a 'scientist' grabbed a random person and cut out their eyes, removed their tongue. Skinned them, removed their limbs, cut off their genitals and removed their stomach, big and small intestines, 1 lung and 1 kidney. Would a Divine Breath fully heal them? What if he stitched his arms to his hips and legs to his shoulder? Would he be returned to normal or...?
SmurfAquamarineBodies he/him Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I think they need to be alive for it to work. A person can survive that.
natc Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I think they need to be alive for it to work. What happens when a Returned tries to create a lifeless using divine breath? 1
SmurfAquamarineBodies he/him Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 So we get two people, give one of then enough Breath for the third Heightening, leaving the other with only one Breath. Break both of their arms to roughly the same degree. Who heals first?
Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 I have some questions for Brandon. Some are serious and some are not. Could Aon Daa power a fabrial? Which book is your favorite? Do you appreciate me asking you these questions? Does Jasnah know about Adonalsium? Is Hoid a Returned? Does Vasher have anger issues?

As Brandon would answer (I'm being daring and not providing sources this time: sorry, bad person) <I don't know for sure> Something to the effect of "that's like asking me to pick my favorite child, but I'd say the most fulfilling was WoK/The Stormlight Archive" Yes. <I don't know for sure> No. Yes. 1

entropicscholar he/him Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Is there a limit to the amount of physical damage a Divine Breath can heal? For example a 'scientist' grabbed a random person and cut out their eyes, removed their tongue. Skinned them, removed their limbs, cut off their genitals and removed their stomach, big and small intestines, 1 lung and 1 kidney. Would a Divine Breath fully heal them? What if he stitched his arms to his hips and legs to his shoulder? Would he be returned to normal or...? I've been reading XKCD, so I'll give this one a try just for fun. Since I'm estimating a great deal, and obviously am not going entirely off of cannon, I'll hide the majority of this behind spoiler tags, and hope the Nazi's don't find me. I'll start with 3 main points for reference. 1. What exactly is breath? BioChromatic Breath is a form of 'raw' (maleable) investiture innate to all humans, and possibly others. The citizens of Nathis have a unique ability to donate their Breath to others. Breath represents a persons Spiritual connection to all things, living things especially, and also contains a measure of "life" in it as well. 2. So, What else do we know of, in the Cosmere, that heals? Well, Ferrochemmy can heal you... but, comparing the amount of investiture Ferrochemmy actually uses to ANY other magic system shows that Ferrochemmy is REDICULOUSLY efficient at doing what it does (looking at the roleplaying game, Ferrochemmy is 5 to 100 times as efficient as Allomancy, in terms of charges consumed). Not the best point of reference then. Stormlight can heal you. And, Brandon has said that Breath and Stormlight are very similar forms of investiture. With raw stormlight (no Surges helping), Lopen re-grew a nub of flesh on his arm using one unidentified Sphere. I'll estimate that aproximately 1 cubic inch was grown. 3. Exactly how much investiture are we talking about here? For starters, Returned have the equivilent of 5000 Breaths. Assuming that one breath is equal to ~1/3 of a human soul... well, how much investiture IS there in a breath, compaired to what you can find in a sphere? or a metalmind? we don't really have ANY data on that, so I'll blindly postulate, based on Zahel. Zahel eats Stormlight to live. Normally, as a Returned, he would need one breath per week. Zahel mentions to Kaladin that he chooses to "Breath" every day. assuming that Zahel requires aproximately 1 Chip worth of Stormlight per day, that means 1 Mark per Roshar week. If this is roughly equal to 1 Breath, that means the Divine Breath held by a Returned is roughly equivalent to 25,000 diamond chips, or 1250 Broams. Math Given that we do not know the size of the Sphere Lopen used, we'll go with the largest denomination, in terms of stormlight storage: a Broam. According to "Human Body Dynamics: Classical Mechanics and Human Movement" By Aydin Tözeren, an arm takes up about 0.0496 The average volume of a human arm is about 4.96% of the human body. And wolframalpha.com claims that the average Volume of a human body is 66400 cubic cm. given an even weight distribution throughout the body, this means Lopen would need just under 330 Broams to re-grow his whole arm (though, a great deal will also occur during Highstorms.) Now, Breath isn't something that is really known for healing people. Divine Breath can, but Awakening usually won't, and while the heightenings grant disease immunity and agelessness, they are never mentioned to increase one's actual healing rate. Still, Awakenings don't actually consume Breath, while the Healing will, so we'll let it get 100% effect compared to stormlight. This means that one Divine Breath would hold roughly the necessary investiture to re-grow 3.79 arms, or 18.8% of his total body mass. Now to Answer the Question. If you did all that to a person, no, a Divine Breath would not heal them. They could get back an arm or a leg, or both legs plus change (or all their skin, etc), but not everything. Sorry. Then again, what if Lopen was just using a chip? that would mean a Divine Breath has 20 times the healing power we calculated. AKA, more than enough to make 3 Complete human bodies. --- and the cutting off someones arms and legs, and stitching them back into the right places. Totally possible, since Brandon's magical healing always restores you to a healthy form matching your internal personal identity. Most people are fairly used to having their limbs in certain places, so the Divine Breath would probably fix that first. Compiled list of Assumptions: * Roshar Currency value is based off of the value of stormlight, more so then the value of gemstones. * thus a mark holds 5 times as much stormlight as a chip, and a Broam stores 20 times as much stormlight as a chip. * Zahel eats one Chip of stormlight per day (BIG assumption) * the "nub" Lopen grew was ~1 cubic inch * one week on Nathis is the same period of time as 1 week on Roshar 6

Jo and the Bush all/any Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Does Pupil Dilation affect the storing of Sight? Are the Unmade Humans? Or Humanlike? (Parshendi, Aimians, Kandra)
Mckeedee123 he/him Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Ok, I've been thinking. In Dalinar's first vision (with the Midnight Essence), he asks Taffa if there are any caves or anything, and she's confused. Dalinar takes this to mean that mankind at this time doesn't know any techniques for digging into rock. So how do they mine gemstones at this time? Does the Shardplate serve as the repository of Stormlight? How does mining even work in the modern era?
ccstat he/him Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 So how do they mine gemstones at this time? [...] How does mining even work in the modern era? Good questions; more info from Brandon would be great. We do know that gems can come from either mining or gemhearts, and that mining on Roshar is particularly difficult (source). I assume that's because highstorms cause terrible flooding in mineshafts (Shallan comments on how hard it is to have a regular basement in a building), and because a continent covered in (regularly renewed) crem makes digging/finding mineral deposits hard. My guess would be that in non-mining eras all of the gemstones come from gemhearts. 1
Zas678 he/him Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Is the physical aspect of Vasher the same before and after he "reveals" himself to be Warbreaker? The deeper question here is if the Returned truly are changing physically, or if it is just everyone's perception of them that changes. Like in the Wizard of Oz- in the books, the Emerald City isn't actually emerald. Everyone that enters just puts on emerald lenses that makes everyone think that the city is green. Is it the same thing for the Returned? They affect the cognitive realm, and so everyone's perception changes? Edited April 15, 2015 by zas678 Took out the accompanying theory. For a later time.
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Can only Shards provide Intent for others? I'm talking about the scene in which Spook gets spiked, in which Ruin provided the Intent. Is it possible for a normal human to see somebody get stabbed in the right place with the right metal and think "Gee, I hope that sword steals Allomantic Tin". Would that provide an Intent? If I were to get a block of Atium bigger than a Human body, and crush somebody flat with it while trying to steal a Power, would that count as spiking? It hit the bind point and came in contact with blood. It just crushed the entire body flatter than paper as well. (Ignoring any physical impossibilities in my premise) 1
LiquidBlue Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 If a Forger has access to Breath could they make their essence marks permanent? Could a Feruchemist with access to Breath use a nicrosil mind to increase the number of breaths they have? 2

Curiosity he/him Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Do highstorms travel across the sea and land, or just the supercontinent? Can a Listener attune one rhythm and speak to another? Mckeedee123 he/him Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 (edited) My guess would be that in non-mining eras all of the gemstones come from gemhearts. That's what I was thinking too. We have to ask sometime whether all gemhearts are emeralds. Edited April 25, 2015 by Mckeedee123

Most people are fairly used to having their limbs in certain places, so the Divine Breath would probably fix that first. Unless they survive long enough that their own honest concept of self changes to regard their arms and legs in reverse positions, perhaps... "Okay, time to heal you." "Right, right. Just remember that I totally had wings that looked really cool. I just misplaced them." "Right....." Edited April 25, 2015 by Turos Stoneward
