Jondesu he/him Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Started reading the Derrick Storm novels "written by" Richard Castle. Clever tie in with the series. They're not bad so far. jW

In either case, I'm glad I read the book. As I said, the worldbuilding was great, and it's nice to finally get all the "walk without rhythm" references! Dune itself is a fine place to stop, children of dune has a pretty wrapped up ending, and God Emperor is a good place to end. Also: started White Sand graphic novel. Briar King Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Dune 6 is a great place to stop. Never read any Dune that's not written by Frank.
Patar he/him Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Just finished Prince of Thorns. Very good, looking forward to picking up the next two. Now I'm debating on either rereading Way of Kings or starting Blood of Elves.

And possibly The Shining. I havent actually read The Shining though, but considering my usual opinion of Stephen King... Jaws. The book is so...dumb. The movie takes out the drug store romance parts out and presents the shark consistently. And no kittens die in the movie!

Yeah, the sheriff's son is playing with a kitten in the front yard when some mob goons come over, break the kitten's neck, and tell the sheriff he better keep the beaches open, capiche?

Did you by any chance read the Witcher short stories? They are good on their own (some say they are better than the Witcher pentalogy) and chronologically take place before the Witcher pentalogy. And they provide context and backstory. I strongly recommend to read short stories first. First The Last Wish, then Sword Of Destiny, and then you can jump straight into Blood of Elves and subsequent books. Edited September 17, 2016 by Oversleep

StormingTexan he/him Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Finished Towers of Midnight. Was decent but not one my favorites so far. Started A Memory of Light man this one is pretty exciting right from the start. I'm both looking forward and dreading the ending because it will finally be over.
Quadrophenia Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Let's see... I've been on a horror reading list as of late. A collection of Lovecraft's most famous stories. A collection of Edgar Allan Poe. Nick Cutter's The Troop. Shotgun v. Cthulhu = an anthology of short stories set in the Cthulhu Mythos, all vaguely centered around the theme of delivering storms of hot lead to a Shoggoth's face. Sword v. Cthulhu = Same as the above, but shorts feature everything from vikings to samurai. Supremely geeky indulgence, really.

If you cant find it Songs of a Dead Dreamer/Grimscribe will do as well, but Teatro Grotesco is better. Clive Barkers Books of Blood are alright so far as well, with some really good stories and some kind of meh. There is also a bunch of great horror for free on the internet. ... I got caught up in the moment... this always happens when I talk about horror... Anyway there is a thing called The Weird: A Compendium of strange and Dark Stories which is a giant collection of... well, strange and dark stories. ... I'll shut up now...

mattig89ch he/him Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 I just finished the last Dragon Age novel. Now I think I'm ready to beat 2, and import that save into Inquisition. I started in on a novel I bought a while ago, that I never really got into before. Battle Cruiser, by B. V. Larson. Its interesting, if a little different from my usual scifi preferences. I was spoiled by the Lost fleet series, so any space based novel I read, almost always has to have space combat based off realistic fiction. And I have to enjoy the world, besides. I'm not really liking this world so far, but the scifi parts are interesting enough to keep me coming back. But it really is, read for 20 minutes, put it down for a few days, pick it up and read for 20 minutes, then put it down for a few days. If anyone has any good, modern detective stories to recommend, I'd love to hear them. Especially any modern noir novels.

I tried to read Dauntless but couldn't get in to it after a few chapters. I will have to try again. Have you read the Man of War series by Paul Honsinger? Or Black Fleet by Joshua Dalzelle? Both are pretty good if you like military sci-fi.
mattig89ch he/him Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 I've never read the man-o-war novels. But I know of them, and I might pick them up in the future. Now I have read the first 2 Black Fleet novels. The first one I really enjoyed. The second, seemed like the author was jumping the shark, especially by the end of the second book, so I haven't picked up the third novel in the series.
Quadrophenia Posted September 19, 2016 Posted September 19, 2016 Another thing I'm reading is the bleeeeeeeeak Second Apocalypse series by R. Scott Bakker. If his writing style is indicative of anything, that man is sort of like if Brandon Sanderson were raised by the Marquis de Sade and Friederich Nietzsche. 1

Like Warhammer40k if it wasn't taking the piss. ... There's also at least one rape scene every 5 to 10 pages in every book. Bit tedious, really. Bakker can't write drama to save his life, so he just has someone, male or female (mainly female) sexually assaulted by rape orcs that wear crowns of severed human penises for a trophy or by shapeshifting demons that spurt black slpooge across your face. Oi vey. One book literally ends with a large Orc army raping to death a smaller human one.
