He is never once tempted by Ring and is the absolute opp of his brother and yet in TTT they ruined it by having him be tempted ugh I don't really see that as ruining him, honestly. its actually more interesting that way, I think, since he does resist it in the end 1
Briar King Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 It was a very big ruin to me. He's 100% pure in bk and not once phased/tempted and then movie goes and throws a 100% out of character arc (on that issue)like Hollywood likes to do.
mattig89ch he/him Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 So, I picked up the first novel in the dragon age series. EA contracted out some authors to help flesh out the universe. And the first book is pretty good so far. Anyone else read this series?
StormingTexan he/him Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 Done with Crossroads of Twilight. Honestly didn't think it was any worst than the last couple of books. Really looking forward to Knife of Dreams which from what I've seen a lot of people rank amongst the best in the series.
Orlion Blight he/him Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 So many books! Right now, I'm working to finish At the Mouth of the River of Bees by Kij Johnson
Renoux she/her Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 I don't know if you're supposed to do Sanderson books on here, but I just finished up Legion: Skin Deep, and really enjoyed it!

I never understood the complaints against crossroads when path of daggers is right there. It is not a coincidence that my 3 least favorite books in the series happen to be the 3 where we don't get Mat's POV. but yes, things definitely pick back up with knife of dreams

CoT is slow but to me it was not a huge let down.
DSC01 he/him Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 The thing about CoT that frustrated me was that Winter's Heart ends with Spoiler the cleansing of saidin, which is pretty much the most significant event since the Breaking, and it seems like it's mostly just ignored. You would think the Asha'man with Perrin would have made a really big deal about it, but only way later do they say anything, and it's just like, Spoiler "Yeah, we aren't going to go crazy and die and maybe kill all of our friends and family along the way now. No big deal." It seems like the kind of thing that any male channeler would want to broadcast far and wide, but there are hardly even any rumors running around.
StormingTexan he/him Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) ^^ 110% agree! I guess there just wasn't enough room in the book to fit all the cloths washing instructions, straitening of skirts and descriptions of arms under breast for a reaction to one of the biggest events in the series. Renoux she/her Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 I'm currently reading a very interesting non-fiction book called "How We Speak." It's an analysis of regional speech in America. It's quite fun reading the dialect of the area where I live as analyzed by an outsider.
The Invested Beard Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 So I'm finally getting around to reading Name of the Wind... aaaaaaaand I can't put the thing down. I'm about two thirds through it and I'm afraid to bring it to work for fear of getting stuck reading while not on breaks. 1
Stick. she/her Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) I've heard a great deal about Name of the Wind, thought I haven't read it yet, I'm definately planning to. I'm currently reading The Fifth Wave and I have to say...its..not...all that great. I can't get further than 5 chapters. People seem to like it a lot, but I don't know *proceeds to re-read Lotr* Edited August 16, 2016 by I_am_a_Stick
Zathoth Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 For being long books The Kingkiller Chronicles are surprisingly short. I am almost done with The Lies of Locke Lamora and then I shall read... one of the books lying around in my room I havent read yet... I should probably finish Perdido Street Station... though knowing myself Im just going to read another Dresden Files...

Was a little disappointed in the second book but still worth reading. Now I just wish we knew when the third book will be out...
Sunbird she/her Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 @Renoux That does sound interesting! I'm having a hard time finding it on GoodReads or Amazon, though; could you tell me the author? @I_am_a_Stick I wasn't a big fan of The 5th Wave either, although I got further into the series before realizing that I didn't actually like any of the "protagonists."

Sunbird she/her Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 I would like some opinions... Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series was recently recommended to me, and I've heard good things about it, but I also read a review that said the relationship between the two MCs (F'lar and Lessa, I believe) was abusive. That has made me a little wary, so I was wondering if any of y'all have read it and can give me some more details.

Neither of them are really very nice people in my memory, and so the relationship (as I remember it) feels much like Sadeas and his wife. So not abusive, but not nice either. It's been a long time since I've read the books, so maybe take my word with a pinch of copper?

One thing to realize is that a good portion of Bk 10 takes place before the ending of bk 9 so there's a huge margin of catch up in it. ive picked up bk 1 of 1st Dragonlance tril from my box of bks. Playing Neverwinter made me really want to dig out my Forgotten Realms bks but I'm now sure I threw them all away in my bk purge getting divorced a few yrs ago.
Jondesu he/him Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Finished the Royal Assassin series by Robin Hobb...feeling empty now, without more of it to read. So amazing, really wonderful writing, and awesome plot twists I didn't see coming at all. Starting the Dragonriders of Pern, since I saw it mentioned here a few times. Definitely good so far, though it started with too many unfamiliar words in the first chapter. jW

I have not read it, but I've heard it's good. 1

I would read The Liveship Traders trilogy first (though you don't have to; the stories are only slightly related to each other). I still haven't read The Rain Wild Chronicles, which is sort of the sequel to The Liveship Traders. I read maybe half of the first of the four books in that series (The Dragon Keeper), and for whatever reason, I just couldn't get into it. However, I have read the first two books of The Fitz and the Fool Trilogy (the last book doesn't come out until next year), and I like that series well enough. There's also a novella, The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince, which I have not read. There's a whole lot to read for those who are really into that world.
AliasSheep Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Just finished Blue Mars. That series was, an experience. I really, really liked them. Next I'm reading Albert Camu's L'étranger, which is going to be fun. And probably take forever. 1
