+Slowswift Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Recently finished rereading "Theft of Swords" by Michael J Sullivan. It's one of the best works of fantasy I've ever read, and on this site, that's saying something.
Briar King Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 Heretics of Dune is easily my 2nd fav of the 6. I loved it.
Dunkum he/him Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 I seem to have stalled half way through 'the rising shadow'. Not because I think it isn't worth reading but because it still hasn't truly gripped me. I will make my way through the series eventually. I've read a lot of people dumping on the books 5 to 10 but I imagine these are the people that were reading the series as the books were being written and waiting with anticipation for the next instalment? I'm going to give Terry Brooks' trilogy a whirl I think. I think I read up to about book 8 or 9 before I had to start waiting, so that isn't biasing my judgement when I tell you that if the series isn't doing it for you by book 4, then it is probably just not for you. I'd say move on to something else. if you aren't enjoying it now, you probably won't enjoy it for a while (not until book 11 or 12, if at all, I would guess), and it'll just be a chore to get through. and no one wants that.
Kestrel she/her Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I've got, quite literally, a chapter left in Michael Crichton's Timeline. Really interesting read. Would be better if I didn't have to annotate it for school.
GreyPilgrim he/him Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I read Perfect State last week, and it is my favorite of Brandon's novellas, excluding TES, which I consider a short novel more than a true novella. I am now reading Dust of Dreams, the penultimate volume of the regular Malazan books. 1
Kestrel she/her Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Starting Emperor's Soul. Borrowed it from a friend, so I want to give it back soon.
Briar King Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I am now reading Dust of Dreams, the penultimate volume of the regular Malazan books. Good luck!
GreyPilgrim he/him Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Good luck! Thanks! It's been really hard to find reading time recently, so it may take me quite a while to get through the DoD/TCG duology, but I am going to do it! Then I still of course have to finish the Esslemont books, and start the Kharkanas series, and read the Bauchelain and Korbal Broach novellas... So I still have a lot ahead of me in the Malazan world.
StormingTexan he/him Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 (edited) I am finally getting to two on my TBR list. The Blade Itself which gotta admit I am having a hard time getting in to. And Ready Player One which grabbed me from the first page. Edited April 6, 2015 by StormingTexan
stormvisions he/him Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 (edited) Just finished Elantris and Words of Radiance back to back. Awesome stuff. There always seems to be so much going on in Brandon's work that it makes my writing look like a dinner of a stale pretzel and an onion slice (sitting besides his full course and glorious meal).I also started reading "The City" by Dean Koontz yesterday. He remains one of my favorite all time writers. There is a bit of magic in this latest book and some deep insight into the human heart. There is also what I'd call, in my admittedly unlettered and unsophisticated way, literary prose - or prose that at least dances in my mind in ways similar to the works of authors considered literary writers. Dean has always been a special favorite of mine, with a corner all to himself. He seems to be a little 'outside the stream' to me. Even when there is some tiny bit that I might not love, I find his work to be truly extraordinary and bordering in places on the sublime. Edited April 7, 2015 by stormweasel

And Ready Player One which grabbed me from the first page. I see this a lot. Most either love Blade from pg1(me!) or struggle with it till the last arc and then love it.
StormingTexan he/him Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I see this a lot. Most either love Blade from pg1(me!) or struggle with it till the last arc and then love it. I've heard so many good things about the trilogy I'm going to keep going. It's also possible in just not in the right mindset. There are things I like about it just nothing super compelling to me yet.
Left he/him Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I am finally getting to two on my TBR list. The Blade Itself which gotta admit I am having a hard time getting in to. And Ready Player One which grabbed me from the first page. Ahhh, Ready Player One, that book was so much fun. I've read it three times I think, I learned to love a lot of Oingo Boingo songs because of that book. I'm really looking forward to Cline's next book. 1

I wasn't s teenager in the 80s (next decade) but grew up on all the games, movies and music they talk about its funny to remeber some of the stuff.
DanTheSeamonster he/him Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 I am now reading; Red Seas under Red Skies, Cursor's Fury, The Truth and The Young Elites. I'm thinking about putting down the Young Elites though, I just can't seem to get into it and Adelina doesn't really appeal to me. Her character also seems inconsistent and doesn't make sense.
Kestrel she/her Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Kaplan, AP World History 2015 addition. Yay.
Left he/him Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Started Guards! Guards! Really really good so far, enjoying it just as much as I did Mort. I'm glad that I've been able to get into the book easily as I've had trouble with many of Pratchett's books, such as The Truth and Equal Rites, which are supposed to be some of the best I think.
Argent he/him Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Guards! Guards! may have been my first Pratchett book. Here's a lovely wallpaper, for no reason whatsoever. Good memories, though not many (it was over 10 years when I first read it; I have more memories from Death's / Mort's subseries). And speaking of Pratchett, I am done with Sourcery. I had forgotten that the Three Pedestrians of the Aprocalypse get stupid drunk in there, that was gold. As is, of course, literally every scene with Death. Started Faust Eric earlier today, and looking at how short it is, I expect to be done with it very soon.
Kestrel she/her Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Kaplan, AP World History 2015 addition. Yay. and Eye of the World. 1
vietnamabc Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Libriomancer by Jim.C.Hines, the amount of shout-out and snark in this series is unbelievable.
Argent he/him Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Libriomancer by Jim.C.Hines, the amount of shout-out and snark in this series is unbelievable. It's the ultimate book for book nerds.
Gabriele she/her Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Rereading Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilo tetralogy. (Any bets the new trilogy will be 4 books as well.? ) Reading Simon Scarrow's Cato and Macro series. Pretty fun, but sometimes I could whack him for superficial research. But then, I'm a Roman geek as bad as they come. 1
Argent he/him Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 I guess I ought to update this before I get a backlog again. Faust Eric is done. I expected it to be worse than it actually was. Reading Interesting Times now, it feels like a step up. The plot is tighter at least.
Left he/him Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Finished Guards! Guards! and storm it, it was good. Really glad that I found another book as good as Mort, well worth the multiple tries to find another Pratchett. Started Powdermage book 2 last night.
DanTheSeamonster he/him Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I just finished Ready Player One last night and it was excellent. I am two hundred pages into Cursor's Fury by Jim Butcher. One hundred pages into Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch, and plan to start Steelheart today. I'm so excited!
