Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan. I haven’t gotten hold of the third Gods of Blood and Powder book yet, so I decided to read his first series, which, while a bit clunky, I’m enjoying quite a bit!

Agree! I re-read the first Powdermage trilogy before I read Blood of Empire because I didn't remember the backstory on

Spoiler

Bo and Nila

well enough to get the most out of the latest/last book. I was really glad I did.

McClellan has definitely improved as an author - the pacing and characterizations are better in the newer trilogy. You're in for a treat, whenever you do get hold of the book.:D

As much as I love the Field Marshall Tamas character, Mad Ben Styke is one of my all-time favorites, & that despite the fact that all of my guesses were wrong re: how the story would end, LOL!

I just finished Republic of Thieves. It was pretty good, though I can't help but feel it's the weakest of the three books.

Spoiler

The side characters were the weakest by far (though I do understand that that's because of the focus on Locke and Sabetha, as well as the fact that it effectively split the cast in half between the interludes and the main plot), I wasn't as thrilled by the Karthain political plot than the others, it didn't really utilize the setting of Karthain as much as I thought it would or should have, with it really just being a backdrop for the events, which I don't feel works because of how important Karthain is in general. There were a lot less twists and the ones that were there didn't completely blow my mind like the others for the most part. While Sabetha and Locke's games with one another were good, and Sabetha's plans were fun, I also found myself missing someone like the Gray King or Stragos. It didn't really have an outright villain working as a villainous mastermind against Locke, which was one of the highlights of the last two books for me. Sabetha just didn't fit the role to me. And I also think its climax was the weakest. I understand why it was so, since this book in general is far less action packed, but I didn't really have much care for how the Karthain political plot ended up in general. I did absolutely love the epilogue with the Falconer regaining his strength, though, that was cool.

Can't wait for the fourth book.

Well it seems that fifth times the charm with the Silmarillion. I have tried to read this book before because like many around here LOTR is dear to me. I have always been bored to tears and unable to finish. I am enthralled by everything this time around. It all started to click. I’m reading it very slowly and constantly checking the index and genealogy lines but I love the brutality and the beauty of this book.

Silmarillion is one of 2 books that I couldn't get into at first but that worked for me the second time around, the other being Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

This is "To-Be-Read," as it's not out till September, but I'm pre-ordering it today & wanted to share with my fellow Shard-ers:

Nala's World - https://www.amazon.com/Nalas-World-Rescue-around-Globe/dp/1538718782/

If you don't already follow this Scottish guy & his cat, check them out on Insta: https://www.instagram.com/1bike1world/ [*** Note: There is some slightly spicy language occasionally, but not much; IMO it's not offensive, but I want to respect all of you.]

The book should be a good distraction leading up to SA4 in November.:D

I just finished The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and thoroughly enjoyed it! Unlike many of the epics I read, this was a nice, quick, uplifting book. I'm on hold for Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto because I'm always on the look for debut authors, and, won't lie, I absolutely am judging this book by the cover. What gorgeous art!

I feel like this thread is so dangerous. I keep drooling at all the books I haven't read yet and now want to...

Empire of Black and Gold by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I’m really liking it so far. It kind of reminds me of Malazan with its vast panorama of cultures and empires.  But is a much easier read with less puzzles and a more workmanlike prose. I’ve actually tried to read this in the past but the books were large paperbacks with tiny print and it made me kind of dizzy to read. I’m using the e-reader this time and it’s a game changer. Best part is if it continues being this great there’s a lot to look forward to. It’s a completed ten book series. Heading back to read it some more now!

I absolutely love that series. If you have issues with the early books at some point just tell yourself to suck it up cause you will absolutely want to make it to books 5-10! Adrian really gets comfortable on the back end of it and takes it to some amazing places. I will be rereading it at some future point.

The Malazan comparison is very apt. Without to much info bks 1-4 are most certainly act 1. I find most complaints start at bk 2(loved it myself) with bk 3 a close 2nd. Thankfully if you are having trouble at that point bks 3&4 are very short. 5-10 are door stoppers.

Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny.

I bought the big book that contains all ten Chronicles of Amber books with a bit of my tax return.

So I finished Chapter 26 of "Hero", and can I just say that the catharsis in this one chapter is absolutely exceptional.

Spoiler

Seeing Drake finally get what's coming  to him and seemingly dying for good at the hands of Astrid is just absolutely wonderful.

And I finished Hero. That ending was fascinating. It was a really bold choice for him to do, and I know there are probably a lot of people who hate it, but I for one love it. It's just so interesting.

Blood and Bone. Pushing on Malazan trek.

I really liked the jungle setting and the humor in this book. It’s really unique in a lot of ways. It was shaping up to be one of Esslemonts best but unfortunately he drop the ball on the ending in my opinion Despite this I would still rank it third best of the original six Esslemont book (Behind Stonewielder and Orb, Scepter, Throne). I’m afraid to say more for fear of spoilers though.

By the way concerning Orb Sceptre Throne

Spoiler

Did you get that they killed the Tyrant with Dragnipur arrows that were made from its shards? It never really spells it it out and requires one to read in between the lines a bit

I’m currently halfway through Dragonfly Falling. I think it’s even better than Empire of Black and Gold!

Finally finished Wild Cards. It started out kind of slow but once it got to the post Red Scare it got really good. My favorite sections were definitely the 60’s & 70’s with The Great and Powerful Turtle and Mark Meadows. There was one interlude that was so dull and boring that when I finished it I realized nothing happened in it and these are meant to bring the timeline gaps.

Definitely interested enough to read more but it’ll be some time before I head back to this universe.

As for what I’m going to read next all I can say is I’m going Skyward.

I wish I could read Mistborn again with new eyes. Experience the shock, horror, and joy of a first read once again.
