What is the deal with Licanus 3?!? My BAM still doesn’t have it and I’ve been up there once a week for 3 weeks now. Today I finally get fed up enough to just order from Amazon and they don’t have it either. What’s the deal? I want to start this series but not till I have that last book at home.

Is the Wheel of Time series always as slow as it is in the start, or does it pick up a lot later on? Because I'm having a sort of hard time really sitting down and reading it just due to how slow it feels.

If you think TEotW is slow then may not be the series for you. I do not remember thinking that book was slow but some of the later ones where the series is primarily focused on character development instead of plot development become pretty slow.

Well, I'm mostly talking about the first few chapters. I'm on, like, chapter 4.

Oh you mean the start start haha! Yeah give it a little more time. I can’t remember it chapter to chapter it’s been a while but overall it’s a decent book and the series gets better. Then not as good then good again!

Yeah, the one thing I know about the series is that there is one book later on where the only thing that happens in it is just people reacting to events in the previous book. Maybe part of the problem is that I'm reading a lot of faster paced books (Gentlemen Bastards, Hero, and Dresden Files notably), and I'm very taken in by the writing style of The Hobbit, so the slow start of Eye of the World along with it just having a standard writing style makes it comparatively harder to read when I could be reading any of those other books.

Haha good. It’s kinda a marathon Instead of a sprint and there are for sure some slow parts but it really is pretty good in its entirety. I remember liking the first few books a lot. Also the last ones Brandon wrote were good.

Yeah, the problem was just that the first few chapters was mostly just introductions and descriptions of the town. Not to say that that's not important, I just thought it was a tad too slow for my liking. Now that something's actually started happening, it's become a lot easier to read.

I started The Light Of All That Falls the final book in The Licanius trilogy. Even with a re-read and the recap I’m still trying to remember who everyone is as I go. Can’t wait to see how it all ends though!

Not reading any spoilers just wanting to know if you got hardcover or trade paper?

I listened to the audiobook actually. I heard there were something included by the author in the hardcover regarding a couple characters that may get a novella.

Has anyone gotten Licanus 3 in trade paperback?

No, I preordered the hardcover and that arrived punctually.

Hmm I have 1&2 in TPB which is all I thought they released as. Guess will have to wait then but my BAM doesn’t even have the HC in either.

I have only ever seen 1 & 2 in TPB, and 3 in HC.  I'm hoping 3 will come out in TPB eventually.  Not even Amazon has a TPB of 3, and usually they release the TPB at the same time as the HC.

So I'm gonna be forced to stop reading Red Seas Under Red Skies since it's a library book, it's almost due, and someone's holding it so I can't renew it. So that's unfortunate, considering it's the book I'm enjoying most and I'm only half through and I doubt I'll be able to finish it over the weekend unless I spend literally all of my time on it.

I did! I loved it. Subtle, but you really got a lot more insight into his character, and why he acted how he acted. Brilliant to add these little pieces of information here and there. ...

I re-read the first trilogy (with Tamas) before reading Blood of Empire, and I'm so glad I did. I knew I didn't have good enough recall on [those 2 characters who appear at the end of Wrath of Empire] so the refresher was valuable. Also, I noticed how much better of a writer McClellan has become, between Promise of Blood and BoE - that was great to see.

Did you feel that you got even more insights on Tamas in BoE? I did - - some of those journal entries, especially re: Erika, were heartbreaking.

I read Brian McClellan's 6th powder mage book, Blood of Empire, over the holidays. A great finish to the "Gods of Blood & Powder" trilogy and (supposedly) his last book set on that world. I had a couple ideas of what might happen, and (as per usual) every one of them was wrong, LOL. Love that!! (I didn't spoil it for myself!)

It's great to see McClellan's skill as an author develop - this book was much tighter and had better flow than his first novel, Promise of Blood, and that one was very strong to begin with.

BoE ends with a kind of avalanche - a McClellanche? - and good closure for all the characters. I very much wonder what little girl was his inspiration for Celine? If he ever writes more in this world, I hope Celine will be a main character!

I currently have a few books on the go. Will pick up book 4 of the Wheel of Time and start progressing forward soon. Finishing up His Dark Materials, currently only book 3 and got Starsight to read! Now, I already did a full Cosmere-read last year, is it time for another before Stormlight comes out? ;)

In the time since I last posted, I started and finished Skyward!  Thought it was absolutely excellent.  I'm about 9 chapters into Starsight now.  Also, it's a new year, and as such, I'm trying to actually knock out a LOT of my TBR this year.  Started up Mistborn: The Well of Ascension.

Went and finished the rest of Red Seas Under Red Skies. Good book. Not as good as the original, perhaps, but still good. Very curious to know where it's going to go from there, and I will likely be starting Republic of Thieves tomorrow

Age of Myth by Michael J. Sullivan.  I honestly think it is excellent despite a lackluster opening.  Well written, interesting and with a plot structure a bit like Brandon's and a bit like GRRM.  The plot itself is a bit cliche.

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. An excellent experimental novel that recalls to my mind Goethe's Faust Part II and the work of Svetlana Alexievich.

Has anyone read The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winters? I'm looking for a new-ish fantasy for when I finish His Dark Materials and before I continue with Wheel of Time for a few books then dropping off to get hyped for Stormlight 4!
