"Here Comes Vi" The lyrics practically scream Vin.

"She's such a misfit. Always ready to brawl

It's like her business, roughing up your friends is the law
There is no difference if you believe you're strong
She's a bulldozer making sure you're flat on the ground
She's like a boomerang, who never gives up
She flies in circles till she hits you and you're biting the dust
So just remember this, when she's chasing you down
Face first, you'll be thrown onto the Proving Grounds.
She'll knock you out."

I am not certain the author is nota Sanderfan.

Tonight I Dance Alone, by Sonata Arctica, for Wax after Shadows of Self.

"Sometimes we find things we are not looking for

And lose the sense of reason.

Sometimes we lose what we are caring for

And face the day without them."

I need to edit this in with a link when I get time. But Songbirds cover of 'Wings of Freedom' seems to suit the ending of Way of Kings AND Words of Radiance (depending on how one interprets it), and some of the lyrics remind me distinctly of Kaladin.

Posted

Okay, finally found time to get the song, so...

Yeah. I feel this fit's the climax of the first two Stormlight Archive books pretty well, with emphasis on Kaladin.

Lyric analysis!

Oh hey my friend behold this victory,

This is the first gloria,

Either the battle at the end of Way of Kings, or the one from Words of Radiance; both were pretty significant victories, both in a military and personal sense.

Oh hey my friend let's toast this victory
For the next battle...

I always take this line as a group splitting up, and promising to toast the next time they meet... which definitely fit's with Kaladin leaving Uritheru and the various Kight Radiant's pursuing their own goals.

Won't let you say they died in vain.

We will fight on to be free now, and I'll be the hero!

Kaladin. Kaladin, Kaladin, Kaladin.

His squadmates, his bridge crew, Tien? His young desire to be a soldier, his current resolve to be a Radiant and liv eup to the ideals that means?

Two swords in hand, we carry on, as we sing Gloria!

We bear the wings of freedom as we fly high!
With vows etched upon our very souls, we will not falter here.
we cut through the madness, and we touch the sky!
We soar into the blue, upon the wings of freedom!

'Flying' and 'Vows' are both things which are fairly important to a Windrunner....

Don't the birds break out of their shell,

to fly in the sky and not in a cell.
Not to crawl pathetically,
or trade freedom for the chains.

Why do you have wings such as these?
It means nothing when you're not free.
The sky it looks too small in this cage.
I'll break free and fly high away!

All the stuff with Kaladin as a slave and his feeling's towards Lighteyes and how they treat Darkeyes.

Freedom is, as death is.

They're both two sides of the same coin.
Freedom or death, it's your choice.
Choose one to be your ally.

I kinda picture the chasam from Way of Kings, the moment when Kaladin stood on the edge of either killing himself, or working towards his freedom... and chose the latter.

For what reason were we

born into this cruel world,
why are we here now?

That... kinda sum's up the Rosharan religious syste,m, doesn't it? The Tranquiline Halls, the importance of Soldiering as a Calling, the general desolation and harshness of Roshar as a planet...

The previous hope that slips through our fingers,

Through all the pain and loss we endure,
Let's nevertheless march, towards the freedom that is there!

Again, Kaladin, and the way he swings from depression to having those slight moments of hope... like whether Dalinar is a good man, or how he feel's about Adolin.

"Ally or foe? Which one are you? Tell me!"

Left way,
right way,
Which one's correct? Tell me!
Ally or foe,
Which one are you? Tell me!

Dalinar, Moash, Amaram. The sheer confusion of these lyrics and how the signer portrays them kinda reflects Kaladin's jumbled thought process about the three of them, and how honorable, noble or correct each of them is.

Two swords in hand, we carry on, fighting with all our souls!

We sing the song of hope and freedom we bear!
with chains linking hearts into the world, we play a song of this,
the outcomes that lurk within the night.
We dance into the sky, upon the wings of freedom!

And at the end of the song, dancing into the sky, I just think of Kaladin and Szeth fightign amongst the storms...

Oh hey my friend behold this victory, This is the first Gloria,
Oh hey my friend let's toast this victory,
for the next fight--
Fighting, bring it on, we'll give it our best,
flying on wings of freedom!

Leading to the ending of WoR, surprisingly optomistic in the face of the Everstorm. The Knights Radiants are refounded, and have joined one another, and are preparing thei counter-attack against Odium.

I will include the link later, but now;

Sonata Arctica- It Won't Fade for the Ghostbloods

A particularly fitting excerpt from the lyrics:

Secrecy, silence, a stench of treason

The glow of the darkness, you brought in the daylight

The cure will not kill you, there is no such mercy.

Rules of the nature are fair and cruel.

EDIT: here it is, although I just realized how much the complete song actualy fits Shallan's arc as a whole:

I don't know how to embed videos, but "Take Flight" by Lindsey Stirling reminds me of Kaldin, especially him discovering his powers and later fighting Szeth in the final battle of WoR.

"Roundtable Rival" by the same for Wax dispensin' some good ol' Roughs justice.

Please don't post any spoilers for Secret History outside of the subforum, even if you put it in spoiler tags.

Can you explain exactly why? If someone is impulsive enough to open every spoiler tag they see, they most likely will also be impulsive enough to browse the subforum.

Just current policy for the first two weeks after release, after the 9th it'll be allowed but right now this spoiler policy is still in effect.

Posted

I generaly browse the shard on a mobile device, so I missed that.

Still don't see the reason for not allowing spoilers inside tags, but I guess complaining is pointless.

Posted

If you follow a topic, particularly if you choose to get your notifications through email like I do the spoilers aren't omitted and the email program doesn't register the tags so you just see inside it.

Not the only or necessarily main reason but just one of them so you know it's not just some arbitrary thing.

Oh. Thanks for the explanation, I follow very few topics, so I didn't know that.

Sticks is a good song for Dalinar, I think.

Hey brother, by Avicii Works for Kelsier (and Marsh)(edit: it also works for Kal and Tien )

Geronimo works for Adolin or Kaladin (perhaps Shallan?)

Hey brother, by Avicci (did I spell that right?) Works for Kelsier (and Marsh)

It's Avicii. ;) And I think it'd work great for (feels alert) Kaladin and Tien, too.

Yes, yes. Thank you for correcting my errors

No. Hey Brother is my Adolin/Renarin song.  I called it months ago  :o  -_-

Ok, now that the Spoiler policy got a little less harsh, I will post what got deleted by the Dark Overlords concerned mods.

For Secret History:

The Harvest, by Sonata Arctica

Analysis below:

The weight of days on me...

I am done.

The corn is burning under my feet

The words like circles and

I'm waiting for someone to catch my fall

in the deepest void of all

This is Kelsier, dead and desperate to not be drawn into the Beyond. It also forms a interesting connection to the literal ending of the world.

Haven't seen you in weeks

No clouds in the sky to rain me a drop

loving touch I need

and I am killing time by the lake

diving off the cliff, many times

scarring myself, colliding

on the lake bed so dry...

Here is his silent wait on the Well of Ascension, with only a barely contained primal force of decay to keep him company and a dying god to visit once in a while. Even the bastard Rashek refused to stay there to make things less boring.

The world's without virginity

And souls have no integrity

The Word of grave old danger -Love,

It's all I'm after, oh

I am done...

While this part of the lyrics does not connect with one specific part of the history, it does catch the general feel, and the "love" part reflects Vin's parting words for Kelsier before passing to the Beyond.

The ground's not shaking under my feet

The World's not turning anymore

Wind is a thief, lonelier than me

and it - does - not - want - me - in here...

Kel's painful encounter with Drifter.

plant a Flower of Love, care for it, water it,

Lounge in the shade of the stale champagne

Take a look at the flower so fatal, yet beautiful

Showed the Bee where to fly and then let it die

This is for Vin, who despite Kel's efforts turned out to be as much of an unwitting pawn to Ruin as he was in life.

The world's without virginity

The souls have no integrity

The Word of grave old danger -- Love,

It's all I'm after, oh

I am done...

Bring me to recovery

give it to me, I'm after tranquillity

I somehow lost my line of sight

Before I cast the final die...

Once planted plastic grapes,

The harvest of a lifetime,

Real bad wine.

The sum of false virginity

and my lost integrity

The Word of grave old danger -- Love,

For you I'm after, oh

I am done

The world without virginity

A soul with no integrity

The Word of grave old danger -- Love,

Bring me to recovery

give it to me, I'm after tranquillity

I somehow lost my line of sight

Before I cast the final die...

Once planted plastic grapes,

The harvest of a lifetime,

Real bad wine.

The idea that he lost the line of sight before casting the final die, planted only plastic grapes, and that the harvest of his lifetime was real bad wine, shows what it meant for him to discover that all he did in life was moving according to Ruin's designs, and find himself trapped in the games of gods without even knowing the rules after death.

The ground is shaking under my feet

The World is turning,

and the wind has a friend in Misery,

but I know - she - only - loves - me...

The most important part are the two first lines. Not only the world did turn and shake before his eyes as it was reborn, but the epilogue shows he wants to make the world shake beneath his feet once again, bit now wishing to avoid being a pawn, and instead becoming a player in the games of gods.

I just realized how well Fly With The Black Swan, by Sonata Arctica, fits Vasher's darker side.

I mean, look at some excerpts from the lyrics:

"Once I got caught in an avalanche,

I must have died,

When the Black Swan flew to the rescue and cried

An offer I could not refuse, now I'm working on the other side."

"Must keep those black wings folded, until the time is right,

to find the one whom I can steal a soul from, to buy more time

Must keep my secrets untold, until the wrongs are right, the only one I could deceive,

I buy my time; need you to fly on the Black Swan"

"Silver lining, sharp and so cold

anger fades into a weak smile

--- you see, I'm ready to do it for everyone

I stabbed you in the back, who will save you now?

Don't worry, I've done this before

It'll hurt like hell and leave you sore

No use escaping, hold on to your ticket of gold

and close your eyes..."

"Must keep those black wings folded, until the time is right, to find the one whom I can steal

a soul from, to buy more time

Must keep my secrets untold, until the wrongs are right, the only one I could deceive,

I served my time, need you to fly with the Black Swan"
