“Plenty, with enough power. The Rift should provide more than enough.”

Jidah bit the inside of her cheek and looked away.

Jidah clenched her hands into fists. She was beginning to taste blood, and her vision swam.

Lati became worried again.

". . . Jidah?"

She swallowed, forcing back her tears. “What?”

“I… I don’t know.”

"Oh . . . okay."

Well, Lati didn't know either. So . . .

She floated a few feet over Jidah's head protectively. Just in case.

She wasn't sure why she did, but it felt good, so it probably didn't matter.

“When I was young,” Jidah whispered. She hadn’t meant to. She hadn’t known she was thinking about that at all.

When she was young………

She pressed her hands to her eyes so she wouldn’t cry.

“I… I had siblings. But they…”

Gray ash, glowing water… withered potatoes that tasted like steel…

". . . O-oh."

Lati had never had siblings. Hadn't gotten the chance . . .

Um . . .

Anyway.

"What happened?"

“Didn’t make it,” she whispered. “When the world died.”

She curled in on herself. Was it just her, or did everything feel cold now?

"Oh. Um , , , okay. I'm sorry."

She really wished she could hug her, now.

There was still a curtain covering the now open window, so no one would have seen it dissolve from the outside. Cautiously, Sigismund climbed onto the windowsill and poked his invisible head through the curtains, trying to see what was inside. I only have a few minutes left of invisibility, so I'd better be quick about the sneaking around part.

As soon as part of him crossed the threshold, there was a blinding flash. A blast of unseen force pushed back at him, leaving his ears ringing. Hot sparks sprinkled his skin and the ground around him.

Not enough force to knock him over or push him far back, but enough to firmly keep him from getting through the window

“We were all gonna die. All of us that were left. I was fifteen. There were fifteen hundred of us… we had months left, maybe weeks… and we all sat there and waited to die. Some of us stopped eating. Some… didn’t… wait around…”

She waited, doing her best to try and understand.

Well, that's a relief, thought Sigismund. This Maker has some security system after all. He stepped back until he was a safe distance from the window, then sent a small lightning bolt at it as a test.

The lightning made it hard to tell if there was another flash or sound that came from the window, but there was another expression of sparks. Parts of the window frame and wood around it were left charred by the strike.

If he's throwing around lightning, he's going to attract attention very fast, including from the townspeople. There are plenty of other houses and people around where Anders lives

Sigismund rewound his watch by a few seconds to reverse the damage. "So, assaulting this defense with magic won't work, either," he thought aloud. "What a curious barrier! I want this Maker to tell me how to make these so I can make my own."

Then he walked around the building, sat down next to Réva, and suddenly became visible again. "It sure is difficult to get inside," he grumbled.

"Well, seeing that we are both trying to get into this house, I reckon we should come up with a plan to get inside."

About ten townspeople now watched them, some shocked, worried, or afraid, others curious or surprised. Some had seen or heard Sigismund's attempts to get through the window, but others just saw that two strangers were sitting outside of Lee Anders' house.

The female seemed very shocked and confused.

"Oh!" Sigismund exclaimed. "I think they want to see a magic trick!"

He walked out to greet them and began juggling fireballs.
