"They left a little while ago," she said quietly.

She pushed her hands against her eyes, feeling ready to cry. You should have been paying attention. You SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION.

"I don't know where they are," she managed, voice cracking.

She cringed away.

"I think they followed 17 . . . I dunno though . . . please don't be mad . . ."

"I-- no, no-- Lati, I wasn't talking to you; I was talking to me; I'm not mad at you." She dropped her head to her knees.

She was already crying.

What kind of person am I, Lati? What kind of mortal am I, really?

She shook her head. I didn’t even notice they were gone.

"Leave, stranger."

"Fine. See you around," Sigismund said, and he slowly walked away, until he was out of sight of the villagers but still close enough to the village so that he could see the Maker's house. Then he sat down and began thinking.

No way am I just going to give up, he thought. That Maker has the secrets to creating life, as well as an advanced knowledge of energy forcefields. He recalled the battle in the caves, where the Maker had seemed impervious to injury, or the house he had just tried to enter, with a strong barrier keeping him out. Yes, he wouldn't give up now. Not with all the knowledge he could acquire.

"Why were you underground?"

Lati eyed them nervously.

"Daryglade?"

She drifted over to 209845.

". . . Why did we come here? Do we need to wait for everyone else? They all vanished . . ."

@Hoid Slayer

“They have somewhere else to be. Us… we don’t have a clear goal. An objective. And so we need to find one. Also, now that Jidah is in a mortal form, she likely needs rest. This gives us a safe place to do all that.”

"Humans... just humans. But better. But... they looked normal....... there was something about them."

"Daryglade... one of the Sennights they selected."

"They're here." Jidah waved her hand listlessly.

Sennights… these terms dimly resonated in 209845, but it could not recall them, like a shadow that fades away as light is shined upon it.

209845 began to scale up to the ledge, then turned back to the group. Climbing this ledge felt like the right thing to do. But looking around at its companions, they seemed lost. Confused. 209845 hesitated, then stepped down off the wall.

”Do you guys… want to follow the others? It will be difficult… but we can try.”

“Yes, rest. Like…” 209845 thought for a moment. “Sleep? Muscle relaxation?”

"I don't need rest," she choked through her tears.

She sniffled and wiped her eyes. A goal? A goal... what would a real mortal do?

A real mortal would be afraid of the viruses. Not just the viruses--- the Cloud.

"We have to stop them."

Besides being a stupid emotional wreck, of course. She hated mortal emotions.

“Villains are the stuff of fiction. The Cloud are the killers this world needs.” But maybe they can brake mistakes…

Yeah, that was the word. Yeah.

After he left, the man rounded on Réva. "And you! What are you doing sitting around the councilman's house?"
