She hugged herself tighter. "I don't know," she whispered.

"Oh. I'm sorry . . ."

She took a deep, shuddering breath.

"I want to be immortal again," she whispered.

"Oh!" Sigismund exclaimed. "I think they want to see a magic trick!"

He walked out to greet them and began juggling fireballs.

They almost all backed away, looking startled. A few bristled at the sight, and one man started forward at Sigismund, shaking his first. "What do you think you're doing, coming to our town and throwing fire around? I don't know what you two want here, but whatever it is, you can forget about it! We don't need more trouble in these parts."

"Dang. Usually they love me."

Just now, Spark of Hope said:

"I am not with him."

He glared at her.

"Look, if you didn't like my last trick, you're sure to like this one!" He pulled out his sword, pulled his sleeve down, and cut his left arm off. "Now, lo and behold!" He stuck a hand in his pocket and fiddled with his watch (unbeknownst to the villagers), and his arm steadily regenerated. The severed limb disintegrated in turn. "Ta-da!"

She nodded hard and dropped her head into her knees.

"It looked so much like this," she mumbled.

They looked horrified when he cut it off, and one onlooker was sick. Some looked surprised or relieved when it regenerated, but there was no adoration from the crowd, especially the angry man who now stood right in front of Sigismund. "You and your tricks are not welcome here. Leave."

"I suppose your lack of hospitality is to be expected considering how near we are to the end of the world. Maybe I can come by some other time to entertain you?"

She drifted closer- but not too close.

"What did?"

“Bunker. The bunker. It was dark and stony.”

“Plenty, with enough power. The Rift should provide more than enough.”

Jidah bit the inside of her cheek and looked away.

Jidah clenched her hands into fists. She was beginning to taste blood, and her vision swam.

209845 nodded.

"Okay then. In that case, we may have to find a way to connect you to the Rift down here. Let me think..." 209845 perused its options. It would be risky, but if it was the only way... "I can connect to the Rift, and then slowly transfer the connection to you. But first, you'll have to drop the shield."

16 hours ago, Bird Furious said:

“Didn’t make it,” she whispered. “When the world died.”

She curled in on herself. Was it just her, or did everything feel cold now?

16 hours ago, Bird Furious said:

“We were all gonna die. All of us that were left. I was fifteen. There were fifteen hundred of us… we had months left, maybe weeks… and we all sat there and waited to die. Some of us stopped eating. Some… didn’t… wait around…”

7 hours ago, Bird Furious said:

"But... then they came. And saved us. They took us away. The grass was still alive there... but sometimes I'd worry..... that it might all go away."

209845 stopped what it was doing. It grew cold.

"Jidah... what was your world called? Who are 'they'?"

In the sudden shock, 209845 didn't realize as it cut off most of its connection to Jidah, causing the shield to begin to weaken.

"I can do it myself. It's close enough that I can get to it."

-

"It wasn't them," she whispered. "It was... it was our fault. An accident...... but it was our fault. Not yours." She reached to the rift for more power, choking back tears.

"Underground. Yes."

“Yes, I know. Those are not the symptoms of a Rebooting. No, my question is: who are the beings that helped you?”

209845 noticed the state of the shield, and exploited the weakness to tap into the Rift. Immediately, a weight was lifted from its shoulders, and it began moving the connection to Jidah.

”Careful,” it said. This may be a little overwhelming at first. Reject what you do not need. And don’t raise the shield any more.” It eyed the viruses wearily, and turned back to Jidah. It had to project confidence. “If you block my connection to the Rift before this is done, we will need to start again.”

The viruses began to stir.

She already connected to it herself

"They wouldn't answer questions," she replied wearily. "They haven't shown up since. But Daryglade... she's looking for them, I think... has been for years, with no success."

Wait… had Jidah… already connected it to herself? Disbelieving, 209845 dropped its connection to her… and the shield stayed up. Impressive. It hadn’t realized that was possible. There was so much more here to be explored, to be researched… but of course, 209845 had to remind itself. The viruses and Rifts had to be deleted. It was crucial for the safety of the Framework. And yet, it couldn’t help but feel a pant for all the scientific knowledge they would never know…

“Well then… what did they look like?”

". . . Why did we come here? Do we need to wait for everyone else? They all vanished . . ."

"Daryglade... one of the Sennights they selected."

"They're here." Jidah waved her hand listlessly.
