Lati listened to the howl.

"What's that?"

209845 began to move faster.

”I’m sure it’s nothing. We’re gonna find somewhere to set up before they get here.”

Privately, 209845 ran the sounds through its databases. Blood wolves, jackals, winions… nothing seemed to match the sound.

As if in response, a second howl suddenly sounded from the opposite direction. Closer.

209845 led the way, turning up its brightness settings to illuminate the path. The tunnel was oddly rectangular, and smelled of soil and vegetation. It was a little damp, but not to the extent that it was dripping, and large enough to easily accommodate the party as they descended into the earth. The streaks of bioluminescent moss continued in a perfect pattern, almost as if…

As they reached the first intersection, 209845 brushed away a piece dirt from the wall, confirming its suspicions. Beneath the layer of soil and vegetation, consumed and reclaimed by nature, were the remnants of a distinct stone wall. These tunnels weren’t natural; they were ruins, remnants of a civilization long disappeared.

209845 was taken out of its stupor by the sudden sound of bestial howls in the distance. The fox’s warning came back to its mind; they weren’t entirely safe yet. If these were ruins, then there had to be rooms somewhere. 209845 turned to address the group.

”We go left,” it announced. “These are ruins; keep an eye out for doors or entryways of any kind.”

209845 turned back to the crumbling wall, a deep sated need to know more taking hold. Someone had built this, left their mark on this world. Soon, this would all be gone. And yet 209845 couldn’t help but feel a kinship towards its creators. Who are you?

Jidah's eyes widened in terror. "Somebody go kill it. Please."

209845 immediately stopped and turned to her.

”No, no, we can still make it!” And yet, as 209845 spoke, a third cry sounded. And just then, 209845 realized what they were doing. Those weren’t normal cries. They were coordinating their movements. They were surrounding them. “Go go go!!!” 209845 waved the party towards an upcoming intersection, prepared to run after them. They would not die on it’s watch.

"This is not what I was meant for!" They were clearly getting agitated now.

"The Makers."

“And you were made to be a pushover who can’t make decisions for yourself?”

Jidah squeaked and broke into a frenzied sprint, easily outpacing everyone, blundering blindly into the darkness.

17 went with the group as they ran, keeping up easily. The howls apparently provided enough reason not to turn back yet.

"17... You don't have to go back. These people have abused you, using an illusion of ownership to control you. You owe nothing to them."

"Oop-"

She hurried down the tunnel instead.

Jidah reached the intersection, having left behind everyone else. She was blundering blindly in the darkness by now. And nearby, a low growl sounded, eerily close. Something breathed.

They didn't seem to hear, or perhaps they just weren't listening anymore.

Her breath came in shuddery gasps. "Ke sivul," she whimpered. "Ke sivul tol kana... please..."

She pulled out her sword and gripped it in both hands, but she could barely hold it with how she was trembling.

She heard the situation. "Jidah, back up slowly. Don't move suddenly. They'll see it as a threat."

He looked helpless around, terrified.

My bad, TwinStorm is online 😃

@Argenti@TwinStorm@Through The Living Glass@Bird Furious@echo74@The Aspiring Archivist@Spark of Hope @BlueWildRye

As the rest of the party catches up to Jidah, at the three-way intersection, a massive feline-like beast suddenly emerges from around the bend directly ahead. The creature appears to be made of the same material as 209845, but iridescent and shiny instead of a deep void black, and its “flesh” ripples as it releases another low growl. Two more follow behind it.

Two more sets of growls alert the party of more of the creatures arriving behind and to their side. The party is utterly surrounded.

Suddenly, the first beast leaps straight at Jidah. With unnatural speed, 209845 races in front of her and instinctively lifts its arm and zaps it-

For a second, the beast appears to remain suspended in the air. Then, its rainbow colors suddenly flash to black and white. Before the party’s eyes, the beast begins to crumble, pixel by pixel, until fading into nothingness. 209845 looks down at it’s arm in awe.

”Huh. So that’s what a virus looks like,” it says, right before collapsing as it is tackled from behind.

"Virus! Die!" Lati cries, giggling as her substance envelops another.
