Owen looked around, concerned. What had happened? He had . . . let that happen. He had stood aside and let others fight. He gripped his sword. He was done with that. People were hurt, cuz he didn't fight back. He looked at 209845 for a moment. Reva had been the first person with a semblance of normality. He would not let this go on.

He pursued 209845, sword drawn.

Réva and 17 were that way as well.

Okay. The groups now are Réva, 17, 209845, Rhyme, and Owen heading in the direction the two viruses fled in, and Jidah, Lati, and Sigismund pretty much wandering aimlessly. Both groups are inside an underground tunnel complex of ancient ruins.

For the first few minutes, 209845 remained silent, thinking about the events of the last hour. How could it have really mistaken Réva as a threat? And Instant Kill Mode... it hadn't known it could do that. The situation worried it deeply. It had made a promise, but these powers were still new to it, and it was scared to find out what they were capable of.

Eventually, 209845 broke the silence among the group.

"Well... our objective is still the same. We need to find somewhere to make camp before more creatures can come after us. When she slapped me, I was able to offload a cookie onto Jidah, allowing me to keep track of her location. I suggest finding a safe location, and then I can go out to search for them." It didn't say what it was really thinking; that without Jidah's connections and knowledge, its quest had arrived at a standstill. And yet... it turned to Owen, a native of this world. "Tell me... I have decided the beauty in this world is worth saving, but I can only do that if I understand it. Tell me more about this world."

She nodded but kept walking.

Jidah stopped in a cave and sobbed for a while.

Sigismund stood nearby awkwardly. "I'm beginning to think I missed something important."

Owen looked at him for a moment, sword at the ready. He had a chance now . . . No. He would not attack 209845, not matter what happened.

Lati quietly shushed him.

"Don't shush me! I am ten thousand years old---" But something caught in his voice, and, realizing her wisdom, fell silent anyway.

209845 watched the man's movements, then turned away when Owen didn't respond. Very well. It supposed it deserved it, after splitting up the group like that.

Eventually, the reduced party emerged from the tunnel into a large, circular room filled with pillars. The ceiling hung high above the group and curved into a dome. 209845 walked up to one of the pillars and brushed away the layer of dirt, revealing a pattern of hieroglyphs. This must have been a religious center, like a temple or church. Indeed, at the other extreme of the room from them stood an elevated dais where rituals likely took place. 209845 looked around, scanning for entryways. Apart from the way they had entered, there were equally large tunnels extending from either side - likely fulfilling the purpose of streets, same as the one the party had been traveling so far - and a smaller tunnel leading up from behind the dais. The amount of passages likely meant citizens would have had to cross directly through the temple regularly in their daily lives.

209845 turned back to the group and spoke; "We have a choice," it said. "The tunnels to the sides are built for easy passage; if we follow them, it would be similar to the corridor we just exited." It passed for a second. "The tunnel behind the dais, on the other hand, will likely lead to a more enclosed space, like a set of living quarters. If we choose to take it, however, we face the danger of getting trapped should this room be blocked off."

"I don't really care." Owen sighed, still conflicted and angry.

Rhyme thought about it for a second. "I'd like to get trapped."

The dirt and vines covering the floor of the dais, upon further inspection, were covered in scratches and pressed down, as if by the weight of a large creature. In fact, the entire room is like that, this appears to be a crossroads frequented by the viruses.

Like I said, I think it’s best if that happens once 209845 leaves the group to search for the others

"You could buy one of these clocks," Sigismund suggested. "Admittedly, as far as I'm aware, mine is the only one that works this way." He scratched his burnt beard.
