One of the viruses noticed Réva and turned to leap at her. That was a mistake. As the virus had its back turned to it, 209845 suddenly leapt forward and deleted it. Five. It hit the ground and kept sliding; as another virus landed instants where it had just been, it leaped to its feet and turned to hit it before it could react. Six.

The screams are cut off suddenly as Lati envelops the virus's mouth. It attempts to bite at its captor, but comes up with nothing, and begins to disintegrate. It's howls, however, lasted long enough. As Lati deals with the large one, two more emerge and move to surround the trio.

"Imma just stay with you if that's fine..." she muttered.

17 held out their sword defensively, but they didn't attack yet, taking another step forward and looking curiously at the creatures.

“Yeah?” She managed.

209845 didn't respond. In fact, 209845 didn't seem to be responding to anything. It's entire form was focused on the act of killing, and it didn't even appear to be behaving consciously. The four remaining viruses around it, seeing what had happened to their peers, began to wail in fear and run away. A single word echoed in 209845's mind. No.

As the first virus began to flee down the corridor to the side, 209845 dashed after it and leaped straight over the beast. The virus could barely let out a final screech as 209845 twisted and deleted it on its way down, then landed to face the remaining three. Seven. The three backed away, whimpering but afraid to take their eyes off the predator. Finally, the first one snapped, and 209845 was on it like an arrow. It raced up to the virus and zapped it again and again, never letting out until there was nothing left to zap. Eight. Two left to go.

The viruses's eyes tracked the blade's movements, transfixed. They began to walk towards 17.

DELETE ALL VIRUSES. DELETE ALL VIRUSES. DELETE ALL VIRUSES. The message echoed endlessly in 209845's head as it faced down the last two opponents. It readied its zappers one last time. The virus on the left was the first to act. It seemed to think for a moment, then lunged towards Réva. PROTECT. 209845 dashed after it, pouring its energy into this movement. Instead of attacking Réva, the virus leapt behind her, putting her between itself and 209845. In some dark recess of its mind, 209845 was amazed by its intelligence. But that dark recess had no control here. 209845 leap over Réva, then blasted itself straight down to land on top of the virus. It never stood a chance. Nine.

The viruses didn't respond. They simply took another step closer, to the point where they were basically brushing up against 17's hand. And then, the first virus began to make a glitchy sound that sounded oddly like a... purr?

17 let their sword hand drop as they studied the thing. They gently touched its head.

"What's a hug?" she whispered.

“It’s a thing mortals do when they’re scared.”

She looked down at herself, then slowly stopped hugging herself.

“Or when they love each other. It’s a way of showing affection.” Her voice wavered less.

The final virus before 209845 began to howl. Immediately, 209845 tensed, prepared for the appearance of more enemies. But no, the pitch of the call... the virus wasn't summoning reinforcements. In an instant, 209845 was there. It was always there. The virus was wailing for mercy. It received none.Ten.

The final virus disintegrated. 209845 looked around, searching for the next target, prepared for the next fight. There was none. The viruses were all gone. Where had they all gone? None of them had run away... 209845 couldn't possibly have killed so many could it? WHERE WAS THE NEXT FIGHT?!

209845 turned to face the sound. It's vision narrowed. There.

The virus leaned in, purring harder. Suddenly, a pained screech sounded from behind 17. The product of 209845's work. The virus tensed, then began to growl again. The second virus, standing next to it, began to whimper.

209845 began to walk towards Réva. In a recess somewhere in its head, it had the dim feeling this person was an ally. But once again, that recess was not in control. 209845 was built for this. DESIGNED for this. And it would not fail.

Probably nothing. You’re useless, anyway.

209845 cocked its head, but continued walking. Why wasn't this virus fleeing? And also... viruses weren't supposed to talk, were they? They aren't supposed to... but there are exceptions, whispered its subconscious. No matter. 209845 would succeed. It's task was almost over.

The pair of viruses that were standing with them took one look at the situation, then turned and ran.

17 now stood defensively in front of the two viruses that had been threatening Jidah, eyeing 209845 uncertainly.

She yelped and got out of the way before Jidah could run into her.
