What is everybody's favorite quotes from Brandon's works?

I think that mine, currently, is:

"I have found, through painful experience, that the most important step a person can take is always the next one."

-Dalinar

"This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a very different thing to say." - Hoid, 1175.4.10.4

To piggy back, the best part for me is the end:

Quote

That is truth. I promise you Kaladin, you will be warm again.

As we well know, no story is ever complete without the circumstances that give it context. I wholeheartedly approve.

its a big quote and It was quite difficult to find it

This one is from Ob i think or maybe Row

Spoiler

"Some men, as they age, grow kinder. I am not one of those, for I have seen how the cosmere can mistreat the innocent - and that leaves me disinclined toward kindness. Some men, as they age, grow wiser. I am not one of those, for wisdom and I have always been cross-purposes, and I have yet to learn the tongue in which she speaks. Some men, as they age, grow more cynical. I, fortunately, am not one of those. If I were, the very air would warp around me, sucking in all emotions, leaving only scorn. Other men... other men, as they age, merely grow stranger. I fear I am one of those. I am the bones of a foreign species left drying on the plain that was once, long ago, a sea. A curiosity, perhaps a reminder, that all has not always been as it is now"

Thisone is from Mistborne It's a letter from Kelsier

Spoiler

Your original duty tonight was going to be to assassinate the remaining high nobleman in the city, but well, you convinced me maybe they should live.I can never figure out how this blasted metal is supposed to work; its safe to burn, it won't kill you, but it doesn't appear to do anything useful. If you are reading this, then I failed to figure out how to use it when I faced the Lord Ruler. I don't think it matters. The people needed something to believe in, and this was the only way to give it to them. Please don't be angry at me for abandoning you. I was given an extension on life, I should have died in Mare's place years ago. I was ready for this. The others will need you. You're their Mistborn now. You'll have to protect them in the months to come. The nobility will send assassins against our fledgling kingdom's rulers. Farewell. I'll tell Mare about you; she always wanted a daughter.

There are some criminally underrated ones from Alcatraz:

Spoiler

You see, that is the sad, sorry, terrible thing about sarcasm.

It's really funny.

Spoiler
By now, it is probably very late at night, and you have stayed up to read this book when you should have gone to sleep. If this is the case, then I commend you for falling into my trap. It is a writer's greatest pleasure to hear that someone was kept up until the unholy hours of the morning reading one of his books. It goes back to authors being terrible people who delight in the suffering of others. Plus, we get a kickback from the caffeine industry...

In terms of actually inspirational ones:

“Somebody has to start. Somebody has to step forward and do what is right, because it is right.”

And

“What is belief - what is faith - if you don’t continue it after failure?”

These quotes are all so impactful! I especially love the one from Hoid: 'But there will be sunshine again, and that is a very different thing to say.' It's such a hopeful perspective. And CtrlAltDepressed, the addition of 'That is truth. I promise you Kaladin, you will be warm again' is a beautiful finish. Thanks for sharing these memorable lines

Generally, it’s considered bad forum etiquette to post on threads that haven’t been active for a while, especially without contributing any new information. Three weeks is borderline, but it seems you’ve previously ‘necro’ed multiple year old threads. Additionally, it’s recommended that you post an introduction in the introduce yourself subforum, stating what Sanderson books you’ve read, perhaps your interests, and things like that. Regardless, welcome to the shard.

“I try to avoid having thoughts. They lead to other thoughts, and—if you’re not careful—those lead to actions. Actions make you tired. I have this on rather good authority from someone who once read it in a book.” - lightsong, i think.

My favorite dramatic quote: (best I can remember it)

"You sent him to the sky to die, assassin. But the sky is mine. I claimed it. As I now claim your life."

My favorite funny quote:

"Stick needs storm light. For... things."

"I am a stick."

My favorite Hoid quote: (because that is a genre unto itself)

"Deal with your own stupid planet, you idiot. Don't make me come over there and slap you around again."

I have read a lot more. So here’s is some ones

Spoiler

“Honor is dead, but I’ll see what i can do. If this goes poorly take care of my men”

″‘What you saw belongs to you. A story doesn’t live until it is imagined in someone’s mind.’ ‘What does the story mean, then?’ ‘It means what you want it to mean,’ Hoid said. ‘The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon. Too often, we forget that.‘”

″‘You’re not a monster, Shallan,’ Wit whispered. ‘Oh, child. The world is monstrous at times, and there are those who would have you believe that you are terrible by association.’ ‘I am.’ ‘No. For you see, it flows the other direction. You are not worse for your association with the world, but it is better for its association with you.‘”

″‘How . . .’ Dalinar said. ‘You fell into a chasm!’ ‘I fell face-first, sir,’ Kaladin said, ‘and fortunately, I’m particularly hard-headed.‘”

“Power is an illusion of perception.”

″‘You want too much of me’ he snapped at her as he reached the other side of the chasm. ‘I’m not some glorious knight of ancient days. I’m a broken man. Do you hear me Syl? I’m broken.’ She zipped up to him and whispered ‘That’s what they all were, silly.‘”

Man, the Wit-Shallan interaction in OB will always make me cry. 😭

An absolutely beautiful chapter that shows Wit—as much as we love him for this—as more than basically comedic relief. I mean, we all love him roasting everyone in a ten mile radius, but I love when he cuts the jokes to help Shallan (later Kaladin) when they desperately need it.

Anyway, for me other favorites.

“The most important step a person can take is always the next one” is genuinely my favorite quote from anything.

(Stormlight spoilers (no WAT))

Spoiler

“My father thinks I’m a better man than he is. Unfortunately for you, he’s wrong.”

Storms, Sadeas’ death was satisfying!

(Also. Wow. The first part of that quote hits A LOT different after we learn of Dalinar’s past…)

”WE CHOSE!”

Not only a great “oh storms!” scene, but also a great payoff to Adolin befriending the dead spren of his sword, even when others mocked the idea. I just love Adolin, y’all.

“YOU CANNOT HAVE MY PAIN!”

There’s nothing I can say about this entire scene that hasn’t already been said. Absolute chills.

(Mistborn spoilery quote below)

Spoiler

Elend’s final speech in HOA, man.

“In the end, they will kill us. But first, they will FEAR US!”

Confession: I threw the book across the room when Elend died. He was my favorite character in the series.

YES, it was a very well written and earned death, but you’d think I was a Coinshot with a metal book, the way that book flew when he died.

It’s been four years since I’ve read HOA..and I still haven’t recovered, man.

And non-spoilery quotes.

“Expectations were like fine pottery. The harder you held them, the more likely they were to crack.”

”There’s always another secret.”

“Oh, storms. She smiled anyway.”

…I could go on and on, but, yeah, there’s a lot of amazing quotes. These are just a small part of my favorites.

edit: Oh, forgot one! From Well of Ascension.

Spoiler

“I write these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted.”

This is where I was fully aboard the Sanderson Fanderson train. The absolute madlad telegraphed the major plot twist from the literal first sentence of the book!

I haven't actually read that chapter yet but I am like five chapters away and can't wait! But I have heard alot about it.

And i love the Expectations quote

Aaaaannnd another quote cause I just read this chapter and it's my new favorite

Spoiler

"You can Find the balance. Accept the pain. But don't accept that you deserve it."

"it's terrible to have been hurt. It's unfair, and awful, and horrid. But ... it's ok to live on"

"I see only one woman here, it's the one who's standing up"

"It's alright to hurt"

"You mostly failed. This is life. The longer you live, the more you fail. Failure is the mark of a life well lived. In turn, the only way to live a life without failure is to be of no use to anyone."

Ok ok maybe I have a thing about anything hoid says. And yes those are all from one chapter. This chapter hit home with me so crazily.

“That way he can fall in love with Someone else. Someone who is a better match for him. Someone who doesn’t go kill a hundred people when she gets frustrated. Someone who deserves his love”

I thought this scene was funny and I liked this quote
