As far as living a long time, traveling to the Cognitive Realm apparently puts your personal clock on hold while there, allowing you to spend years in there while remaining the same age. Speculation, though.

Ok so something has been tripping me up lately. Recently, when browsing through the Coppermind, I found out about Aon Ati which got me thinking about where Ati (the character) comes from originally as he was a person before becoming a Shardholder. Few other things, I know that Hoid knew most of the Shardholders before hand so maybe Ati comes from Yolen. There was also a mention of Ati (probably the Aon) in the Hope of Elantris.

So, thoughts?

All original Shardholders come from Yolen, as Hoid does. Hoid knew if not all, then at least part of them.

I've been wondering about Feruchemical zinc, storing and tapping mental speed...

If a steelrunner can move insanely fast, wouldn't they need the mental speed to keep up with their bodies?  In that case, wouldn't mental speed just be a subset of steel's "physical" speed?  Otherwise, you couldn't run through buildings, up and down stairs, and navigate combat without tripping everywhere or running into things.

You're correct that there's overlap:

[11:32]

Alterodent: With zinc, you get mental speed. How is that any different from steel, except without [physical] speed?

A: I think of the mental speed actually turning you into... Let's say you sped up your body, and you wanted to figure out some really complex equations.

Q: So it lets you have intuitive leaps.

A: Right. It basically turns you into Ken Jennings. That's how I imagine it.

Kurk: So it's not like bullet time?

A: No... It'll bullet time a little bit, it certainly will, because you're thinking faster than everyone else, but it has applications beyond bullet timing. Bullet time is really-

Kurk: That’s steel’s thing?

A: That’s kind of steel's thing. They overlap on that one, because the steel thing... But yeah. It's more like "I think fast, but my reaction speed is not sped up".

I view it as zinc makes you Sherlock Holmes, while steel makes you the Flash. Tapping speed does accelerate your mind, but not to the same level. Actually, here's another question. When storing speed, is it like being in a skintight cadmium bubble? What I mean is, you start storing and before you know it, you have been storing for an hour. If not, would that be the case with zinc?

Posted

I always thought that when storing steel you just slow down. The ability to sense passage of time would be unaffected. Reflexes will also be slower.

However, that may be case with zinc. But I don't think so, I perceive storing zinc as just being very low with catching on what's going on. You'd be slow to figure out things. You'd need more time to get what somebody is suggesting or implying.

Does anyone know if Brandon's said anything about the Cognitive aspect of a Drab, such as whether they still have one or if it's been affected or not?

I don't know if there's been a WoB on the subject, but their minds appear undiminished, technically speaking, from the loss of Breath (see also the philosophical discussion where Jewels smacks down Vivenna's arrogance re: the Iridescent Tones).  It's the Spiritual Aspect that's been neutered.

I was just wondering because I found a WoB where he says that drabs have no innate investiture, and the implications of having no innate investiture and the only mental effects being in emotions (according to the Coppermind) interested me.  Thus, wondering if he ever mentioned the Cognitive.

The WoB about drabs having no innate investiture is contradicted by a WoB that says it is a toss uo between them and Lifeless in terms of their investiture interfering with steelpushes, so I wouodn't theorize on that assumption until things get cleared up.

Why didn't the Lord Ruler destroy the Lerasium at the Well of Ascention?

Is it because he couldn't physically destroy it or because it would return to Ruin?

He didn't any reason to do something like that.

The Lerasium was safe here, and He may have need of it in the Future.... (To boost his Allomancy or to boost the Allomancy's power in the Nobles)

We have a WoB on this, though it's not too useful.

Wait, do we have any confirmation about how many beads of lerasium did Hoid take? Maybe he burned a few and took another few for Feruchemy?

We have a WoB:

Mike Cockrum (23 January 2013)

How many shards has Hoid received powers from, whether taken, stolen, given, etc.?

Brandon Sanderson (23 January 2013)

Well, he has a bead of Lerasium.

(source)

Whether or not this precludes the possibility of him having multiple beads is up to you. He refers to "the element" in his letter in SA, another reference to a singular bead.

I remain a fan of the theory that he burned half the bead and uses the other half as a metalmind. Being a weaker Allomancy doesn't matter when you can Reverse Compound.

If I don't remember wrong, recently someone asked about "the element" and BS replied that it's something about Yolen, not the Lerasium bead.

He is something about unpublished work, therefore:

It's a topaz

I do not believe you are correct. I think this is the WoB you are referring to:

In the Second Letter Frost mentions a gemstone; is this the Moon Sceptre?

Brandon - No, no it isn't but good question. It is actually in relation to Topaz, a name used frequently in his past.

The element is mentioned in the first letter. I believe we even have a WoB from Chaos explicitly mentioning the element is a lerasium bead. I'll edit in if I find it.

Edit: Wilson confirms it here.

I have misread the WoB... My Bad  :(

So, what IS reverse compounding? I've seen it a couple times, but never an explanation. Searching comes up with a thread in the Bands of Mourning spoiler area, but I'd rather not look in that (I prefer to read the book all at once rather than reading preview chapters).

Also, if the answer requires BoM spoilers, it's fine just to say so and leave it at that.

The term comes from these WoBs:

dyring

A coinshot able to store weight can, as you showed us with Wax push in a ridiculously powerful manner, as the weight/mass is the largest factor wich controls the push strength.

I'm wondering if the same can be done with soothing(or rioting). If you where to increase your identity, that may/should increase your emotional imprint(or whatever you might call it), would your soothings/riotings become wastly more powerful in a simular way as weight makes steelpushing more powerful?

And if it does, is this how the lord ruler improved his Soothing in such a spectacular fasion?

Brandon Sanderson

Well, the Lord Ruler--don't forget--could compound any Allomancy he wanted. That creates some crazy effects. As for what you discuss in your first question, I don't want to touch too much on Identity yet as I am saving it for later books. Talking too much here might undermine my ability to reveal interesting and cool things in books when the time is right. I like your theory, and it has merit, but I'm not going to give you a yes or a no as it delves too much into what Identity, as an attribute, can do.

BRANDON SANDERSON (paraphrased)

I continued to ask about the Lord Ruler and his Allomantic strength. There's an upper bound to the amount of power you can get from being a savant. Brandon said that, obviously, the Lord Ruler wasn't using duralumin and Elend could only get that powerful in Soothing using duralumin. He implied that there was a way to Compound to enhance Allomancy. (Note, we have discussed this on the forums a while back. This isn't news.)

With Reverse Compounding on this forum, we talk about a presumed Hack to Allomancy and Feruchemy (like the regolar Compounding) to use Feruchemical Powers to boost Allomantic Powers.
