Everyday Feruchemy

Recommended Posts

We often talk about using magic in awesome, hypothetical scenarios, but in which most of us would likely never really want to be in ourselves.

But Feruchemy has so many applications for situations that everyone would be in.

So, what are some ways that you guys think that Feruchemy would be useful to your own or someone else's everyday circumstances?

Here are some of my ideas.

1. Store body heat with brass when it's hot outside or tap when it's cold. You can wear any type of clothing you want and with supreme comfort any time, anywhere.

2. Store calories with bendalloy to help with that diet you've been meaning to go on. You probably can't store actual body fat, but you could still control your caloric intake with precision (though it probably wouldn't help your self-discipline).

3. Store memories with copper to perfectly recall later. Who hasn't forgotten something on their to-do list because they misplaced their notepad, or had a really cool and inspirational idea- only to completely forget it later.

4. Store wakefulness with bronze to fall asleep. I sometimes have trouble with my circadian rhythm and am prone to falling asleep too late at night to get a full night's sleep. But if you store wakefulness, you could fall asleep on a whim, and then you can tap any extra wakefulness later, say when your work or school requires you to go overtime.

5. Tap mental speed with zinc and determination with electrum to improve study. Study can be hard. Sometimes, you just need some extra determination and focus to get yourself moving, or some extra mental acuity to solve a particularly tricky algebra problem.

6. Tap strength with pewter to do outdoor chores. Not everyone has this need, but I have to do outdoor chores on such as gathering and splitting firewood or building garden bed and such that require more physical strength than I typically have. Pewter's use is obvious here.

1. Steel for making a morning routine very quick and with bronze for waking up really fast.
2. If you live on a high flat, or are in the high building store all your weight and jump out of the window to quickly get to the ground. Enjoy the faces of terrified people.
3. Tin for storing senses when they overwhelm you, or tapping whey you want to hear/see something far away. Store all your pain away.
4. Storing duralumin when you want to remain unnoticed (ticket control - free entry everywhere)
5. Making the night under a blanket nicely warm with Brass. With storing tin, and later bronze it would make falling asleep very pleasant.
6. Well as you said, you can use zinc+bronze+electrum for study, but why not "cheat" with copper?
7. Read every book, from every field to have basic or more knowledge and store it in copper. Like store everything in copper as much as you can.
8. If you're under legal age, store Atium to buy alcohol (heal toxicity with gold! - kids don't drink alcohol!!)
9. Tap tin for pleasure activities.
10. Tap duralumin to make new friends and connections easier.
11. Play with identity and aluminum, and chromium and fortune, it could be fun.
12. Make as large and full goldminds as you can, they will be useful for everything.
13. If you want to take the day off, store electrum, zink, tin, and every worrying memory in copper, and just make a very lazy day of nothingness.
14. Break the Guiness World Records in the longest and deepest freediving with cadmium and pewter.
15. There are probably some peeks unclimbed without oxygen tanks, so again with gold, brass, pewter, iron, electrum, bendalloy and cadmium, make your name forever written in history and claim those peaks.
16. Eat everything and store energy in bendalloy.
17. Tap zinc and chromium for critical situations requiring important decisions.
18. Figure out how to make medallions and give them to your friends and family so they can also live like you and have fun.
19. Making a meme with an olympic runner being overtaken by the cameraman a reality with a bit of steel.
20. Make a YT channel and waste your life pranking people with real superpowers.
21. Accumulate a crap ton of duralumin connection and run for presidency tapping it all on the day of elections.
22. Make sure to use your powers to prevent disasters, car crashes, accidents and save lives! Including taking cats out of the trees. Be a hero!

How even did you think of this many?

Gotta love 21 though. I would bribe Sanderson to see him write that... if I actually had enough money (ahem, money at all), that is.

Just went and made a list of half the reasons I would want feruchemy over allomancy.

1. mess with people by storing strength with pewter, go to the gym and slowly tap it as you workout so you leave the gym with a body builder physique

2.use electrum, steel , and zinc to improve procrastination. (why do the assignment 1 hour before the due date when you could do it 1 minute before the due date?)

3. tap chromium and make a fortune gambling

It would still work because it would help to let you know what to bet on and, for example, which number to pick on a roullette

Not to that extent. It would just give you a feeling you need to be at the casino, without giving you anything more. Hoid related WoBs:

You've mentioned before that Hoid ends up where he needs to be.

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

Yes, and usually without knowing why.

Xyrd (paraphrased)

Is chromium involved in that?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

Yes. Well, he's not necessarily using chromium, but the underlying mechanic, yes.

Does Hoid ever show up somewhere, stand around for awhile, realize that there isn't a novel-worthy plot going on, and leave?

Brandon Sanderson

*laughs* Yes, Hoid gets around a lot and that has happened a couple of times. He does not know everything.

Well it could get to that level, kind of like Atium and whatnot, it would just require you to tap quite a bit.

Store weight when trying to exercise. Especially useful if you have a lot of fat. You can build up your body's tolerance for aerobic activities without the burden of your own weight. That's one of the biggest challenges to getting overweight people to start exercising is their own dead weight legitimately makes exercising harder.

Tap weight any time you need a little extra stability.

This one is good. It gave me idea, that you can use brass to eat food as hot as you want!

That actually reminded me of a question I had about the full utility of Feruchemical brass; if a Firesoul only has part of themselves heated up to a dangerous amount (say, maybe they are holding a piece of hot metal, such as a cooking appliance), could they still use their powers? After all, if you have to store heat from all parts of your body equally, then Feruchemical brass's utility is definitely more limited - you'd freeze if you tried to make yourself same from overheating one section of your body.

I believe it's uniform across whole body. But it might provide some form of resistance to temperature changes, such as iron weight doesn't crush your bones, so those hurtful effects won't happen (if you don't tap body-melting temperatures). Brass could also affect heat transfer across your body, so the temperature change would be more quick and uniform.

I've found WoBs, storing heat makes you fire resistant:

Thoughtful Spurts

If tapping heat means your own body gets hotter, does it also mean you become immune to hot temperatures so long as you're tapping it, or should you fill heat and grow colder for that to happen?

Brandon Sanderson

As everything in Feruchemy, you become immune to the effects of the ability only. Like weight doesn't crush you, but at the same time doesn't have a net gain in strength. Growing colder, however, would be more helpful in this regard.

Questioner

If Feruchemists can store warmth, and you can Compound if you have the dual... Could they harm themselves by drawing too much warmth?

Brandon Sanderson

Could they draw it out of their body and therefore kill themselves by freezing themselves?

Questioner

Either way. Either that, or burn and Compound too much...

Brandon Sanderson

This is harder to do that you think it [is], because built into Feruchemy is the natural body's resistance to the things you're doing, but it is possible.

Nice. I had assumed that the whole "protection from your own power" in Feruchemy was only in regard to you tapping the power, but it sounds like it goes for storing too.

I mentioned the casino, but I forgot to mention the site where I spin slots all the time.

Gambling has always been a game of chance, but what if you could tap into an intuitive sense that guides your bets? The idea isn't new, but it continues to capture the imaginations of both casual bettors and seasoned gamblers alike.
