"Not yet..." Antin lunged forward and grabbed the tome, dampening its magic.

The witch raised an eyebrow. "A Vacuum? Interesting." She waved a hand and a square portal appeared above Antin. A large cubic mass of ooze fell out.

By chance, have you heard of a gelatinous cube?

For the next hour, Mariel used her scepter to command Yerik, Hyron, and Miyako to do all sorts of bizarre actions, like an elaborate game of Simon Says.

Eventually, she stopped, leaning her weight on her staff, her breathing heavy. All compulsion vanished. "That's enough for today," she said with a wave. "Take them back to their rooms."

Any objections?

Miyako glanced over at the princess. "Why are you practicing controlling people?  Ain't that the Queen's job?"

i feel like we should have at least found ways to resist... especially if this was nonstop over the course of an hour, using not our true names and a weaker form of the magic.

It's not a weaker form of the magic- limited, perhaps, but not less powerful. Why that is the case may be a question worth asking.

Nonetheless, you are correct; a least one of Hyron and Miyako was able to partially resist a command that Mariel gave. That is why she is ending the session now.

"It is my right as well," replied the princess through gritted teeth. She glanced backwards at the crystal for a brief moment. "I was chosen."

I have, but I don't know too much about it. Might it be affected by Vacuum magic? Also, I'm assuming she produces her own portals and that's why she was able to make one even though he's touching the tome?

Basically it is a cube of sentient non-magical burning acidic slime is falling directly over you. And yeah, the book is a focus for more complicated spells but for simple portals like this she doesn't necessarily need it.

Antin got out of the way as fast as he could, and he attempted to grab the tome from the witch's hands.

Hmmm. The cube is a few feet above you and its pretty big... Would it work if you were able to grab the tome but still get hit by the ooze?

Sure. I guess you'll have to describe the effects.

Antin snatched the tome away from her and threw it back into the slime as it fell. Once it hit him, he began scrambling to get out as quickly as possible. "Quest!"

"If we stay out their way it should be fine," Whist's voice shook a little. Rich people scared her.

She didn't notice how the road had almost completely cleared of all other travelers. The carriage and soldiers caught up to the group, moving side by side with it for a bit.

The ooze collapsed onto Antin, consuming his form into its mass. The green blob burned against Antin's skin, and made it feel like he was trying to move through jello.

The ooze slurped forward crawling towards Quest, carrying Antin inside. Quest yelped and threw an orb of fire towards the ooze. The spell fizzled against the side of the ooze, causing a small section to be blacken. It advanced with no sign of effect.

How easy/hard is it to get out of the cube? How long can he last in it?

Hmm. It's pretty hard because your trying to move through a very thick vicious liquid without any traction. You would probably die first from suffication rather then acidic damage, but Quest is about to prevent that from getting to serious.

Quest desperately ran through his options. Antin was effectively stuck until Quest could do something, so that was a priority. The witch stood to the side, shaking her wrist and grimacing.

Quest could make an active rune and try to destroy the ooze with fire magic. Then again, that would probably harm Antin. His magic would dampened the effect but it was probably not advisable. Could he perhaps separate Antin and the ooze and then try to destroy or hinder it? An idea leapt to his mind.

Quest riffled through satchel while running around the side of the house. The ooze relentlessly advanced behind him. Quest grabbed a paper with a triumphant shout and began to modify the existing rune circle. He erased the passive rune and added active control and doubled checked that the growth rune would function properly.

Reasonably certain this wouldn't blow up, Quest flooded the rune circle with magic. Vines rocketed from the ground, withering forward under Quest's command. As the ooze turned around the house Quest reached out with several vines towards Antin. They snaked around his arms and waist and attempted to pull him from the ooze.

Okay, what kind of damage has the acid done so far?

Antin gasped as he broke the surface of the cube. However, the trip into the acid had weakened the vines and they snapped right before Antin was fully free. He cried out in pain, managing to pull himself out. He got up, stumbled for a few steps, then collapsed to the ground.

By this time, Whist realized just how empty the road had become. They carriage and soldiers were the only other travelers on the road. The two groups continued for a moment, side by side. It was horribly quiet.

A shout came from within the carriage and it stopped moving. One of the nearest soldiers gave an audible sigh, and was elbowed by one of his companions. The door to the carriage swung open, and a young girl jumped out, not waiting for a footman to help her down.

Her dress too, was an extreme pink. Lined with opals and covered in bows, it was kind of hard to look at. Her curly black hair was pulled into two pigtails, and they bounced vigorously as she approached them.

"Who are you?!" She asked. It was hard to tell whether she was eager, or enraged. Either way she was loud.

Whist reflexively put a hand on Fiadh's shoulder, too stunned to think of an answer. She had a feeling her companion was right to believe this girl wasn't very friendly.

Mariel's hands tightened on the scepter, her lips drawing to a line. Her eyes seemed to flash with something, but again, it was indiscernible in the dim light.

The mental pressure on the three of them to leave redoubled.
