My best guess is we'll see more of in-world OB. I mean in other parts since part one is almost over, it will probably end revealing who wrote it. Still, WoK and WoR didn't have so many epigraphs with little valuable information. @Toaster Retribution I remain skeptical though. Why is it there after so much time? The other unmade move around.
-
Does anyone else think the epigraphs are useless? Even when we find out who the author is, they won't give us much information. I'm actually disappointed, in-world OB so far seems pointless.
-
I doubt what we saw was Unmade. They are supposed to be nine splinters of Odium and just copycat killing people who look similar doesn't have the hateful vibe to be one of those.

[OB] Spoilers* Did We Just Spot the Kandra?
Aleksiel replied to Obnoxiousspren's topic in Stormlight Archive
The kandra is supposed to be a worldhopper, why would s/he spend centuries trapped in Urithiru to only copycat murder random people? I don't think it's one of the nine unmade, why would Odium bother to create a splinter with such pointless power? I'm more inclined to think that's part of the Urithiru's defense system gone corrupt. -
Shallan commented on that darkness she sensed before, it could be connected to why she can't draw the tower and I do think it's part of why the Radiants abandoned the city. But influence Adolin killing Sadeas? The only interesting choice of words during that scene in my opinion was the following: However, I'm skeptical it has a deeper meaning. Allomancy isn't at play here Too cosmer-ish. But I don't get this part from your post How could a city or a building be a subject of morality? Morality is related to right and wrong, but in the sense of behavior and principles, not all sorts of wrongness.

Probably wind blew crem and dust for centuries and it sealed the door.

@ZenBossanova no idea why that first quote has me as author, I didn't write it, but answered to it.

@BlackYetiI agree it's highly unlikely (if not impossible) Jesus looked like that. But that's British way of presenting him as you said, which isn't representative for Christian art as a whole, however I don't claim professional level. The depiction you presented may be usual for you, but is far from what I'm used to. Here's two examples from Eastern Orthodox: I've seen lighter and darker, too. It depends on the overall coloring the artist used. He probably based Ash's skin on lore. That being said, I'm not sure alethi have a concept for race, I read them as ethno-centric and everybody non-alethi is judged based on religion and eyecolor. Well yes, but Eve was supposed to be naked in the garden. However I agree art often challenges social norms and beautiful women are often depicted with little clothing.

The term white never made much sense to me, it has no fixed meaning, it depends on who you ask and which period you're talking about. There isn't that much difference visually speaking between south europeans and middle easterners. Orthodoxy (coptic, eastern, let's include armenian, too) depicts Jesus as dark haired man with tanned/olive/lighter skin, it's difficult to tell in icons. Ethiopian icons I've seen paint him as a black man. We can't be completely sure as Jews accepted converts (Ruth is the most famous one), so his ethnicity isn't set in stone. There are naturally blond haired people with lighter complexion in the ME (albeit rare, but those are rare in southern europe, too), however drawing Jesus as blond is the oddity, not the standard from my perspective, so I disagree with your statement. Christian artwork is much more than a few countries you are probably thinking of when claiming this. But I digress. It is interesting that a religious zealot like Amaram didn't know how artists throughout the ages have depicted the Heralds, but then again it isn't unusual for religious zealots to be ill informed. From what I recall Heralds are typically depicted as stone statues, so skin color isn't part of modern day alethi vorin art, thus Amaram hadn't considered it. The painting is old and being vorin doesn't make it alethi, so no reason to alethinize it. I was surprised how revealing the dress is, may be vorin people became more conservative in their clothing as time progressed.

[OB] [Edgedancer Spoilers] Thought's on Lift in Oathbringer
Aleksiel replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
I agree with you. I loved Lift's third oath so much, especially how she interpreted and executed it - those ignored didn't just cover people of lower social status, she recognized anyone can be ignored, even the awesome shardbearer who was chasing her. Dalinar, despite being one of the most powerful and wealthy men in Roshar, is currently one of the ignored. Lift lacks the judgmental attitude and antagonism Kal has. I have a feeling Edgedancers will be a great example of an Order that doesn't discriminate and I take having Vedel as one of the four painted Heralds means we'll see more of them.- 34 replies

Shallan drew Urithiru in a surrealistic style, so why not this? It's supposed to be very old painting and art always challenges social norms.

It reminds me visually of the First Hokage's necklace, which helped him capture and control tailed beast, so why not unmade, too? No, seriously, they look alike and the suggested functions are similar

Yet in an unintended way it has remained timeless. In-world the masks might be connected to the 'shalashian temperament' that has been mentioned, it was never clarified what it meant exactly or the knowledge illumination allowed one to look different was still common when the painting was created. I wonder where she is supposed to be - may be on one of the moons and behind her is Roshar?

Ten lanterns like the number of Oathgates, may be one from each silver kingdom. The in-world artist must know Ash could change appearance. I like how it has an out of this world beauty vibe. @StormingTexan that's a very interesting way to interpret it, I didn't consider it. It's fitting isn't it?

It's because of Vasher and an ambiguous answer from Brandon about her. I share your confusion why so many people are confident she'll have a part to play or we'll even see her.

@duladen @The Sovereign We had Nale in WoK art, so I doubt it will be him. edit: If one is Jezrien, then that's one of the two we haven't seen, this one is definitely Ishar. Pretty cool.

Ishar and Ash then, the dress is fitting for illumination and the mask is her ability to change appearance. I wonder who are the other two?

Ah, you are right, thank you! I didn't see speaking any language as strange, so may be that influenced my misread I agree with @Yata, I expect spren to speak all languages from human perspective. In the CR one can understand a language they don't speak and even if spren is in the PR, it is connecte enough to the CR to use this.

Not being a member of a secret organization is the given status, you need a reason to initiate someone in a carefully guarded secret. 'If's she Radiant, she can't be bad, right?' isn't exactly flattering image of someone. It's not just that she acts suspiciously, it's also that she lacks a strategy or even a decent approach in her initial interaction and first impression is very important, she wasted opportunity instead preferring to walk around smiling, which achieved nothing of value.
-
Szeth wasn't a member of a secret organization and those murders were intended to be flashy. Iyalati has managed quite well to stay out of the spotlight in the war camps, she blends when she needs to. I stand by my point - Malata doesn't act like a person one would want in their secret organization. What reason does Vargo have to include Malata in the Diagram? Why even bother to tell her? If she was a diagramist, it would have been an excellent opportunity to gain Dalinar's trust to infiltrate his close circle and deflect him in the wrong direction when the time comes without Vargo's direct involvement, who claims to just have met her in another country, but that chance is now gone and she would need to do some damage control to gain Dalinar's trust. She blew the chance to get on Dalinar's good side from the start, a diagramist or a semi decent member of secret society would have had a strategy in mind to achieve the best possible result, not just wander around smiling like an idiot. As I said, I do not expect Malata to be anything more than too pleased with her new powers or something similar. An outline way to throw us in the wrong direction, a red herring.
-
Why include her in the Diagram at all? Why not simply manipulate her? You do not want members that arise suspicion less someone decides to investigate and ruin your plans. Just like a good assassin won't stand out, a semi decent member of a secret organization shouldn't make people who just met her wonder what she's hiding. So in my opinion the fact she creates a feeling of distrust towards her and her motives excludes her from being one of Vargo's initiated diagramists. I think her behavior and the suspicion from other characters will end up a red herring.
-
Where was it stated she can't speak good alethi? I must have missed it. If spren can hide in Shinovar, she could be a stoneward survivor spren from Recreance; if their kind is one of those Pattern said went nearly extinct during the event (and we saw SW abandoning their oaths and spren en mass during Dalinar's vision of it), then Syl doesn't have any recent memories even from the CR to go by and judge it.Shin's appearance could have influenced the yellow spren perception of itself changing its facial features when in humanoid form. At least I always thought Stone Shamanism and possession of the Honorblades meant they revered Taln, who was left behind by the other Heralds. However, you bring a good point from ED, so may be you are on the right track. I haven't given any thought to Shin possibly revering voidspren by mistake or deception.
