I'd just be like, "FEANOR! Quit asking Galadriel for her hair!" "FEANOR! Quit being so greedy with your precious gems! They're not that special!" ..."FEANOR! WHAT did your sons just do?" Kind of. The Silmarillion is the most well known. It's not exactly a novel, though. It's the story of the world from its singing into existence to the Third Age (which is when LotR takes place). I personally really like it, but it is dry and has a lot of archaic language. But I would encourage you to try it!EDIT: Morzahoth doesn't get Gollum. He gets Mandos. EDIT 2: Strike that. Morzahoth gets Eöl.

You Know You're a geek/nerd when...
Elbereth replied to Allomancy's topic in Entertainment Discussion
That's a good one. One of the easiest for me to memorize, too. I think I just memorized it when I got bored of talking like the Gaffer (elderly and British, that is) for the prose memorization. I particularly like the line "In every wood, in every spring, there is a different green." -
It's not a reference to the books. It's an in-forum reference, here.

I'm not sure yet. I'm thinking usual superhero/magic powers. For instance, fireballs. The cool limitation is that it has to be narratively appropriate, but I haven't decided what it can do exactly yet, except that it'll be related to whatever story that star represents.

In that case, I call Lorien. Also, Mistrunner, those are hilarious. EDIT: Wait! No. I call Finarfin. Finarfin is amazing. I would call Feanor, but Feanor went kinda bonkers.

A magic system which involves the stars. Specifically, each star represents a story from the world's past or future. The brightness correlates to the importance of the story. Storytellers can draw upon the powers of these stars, if they know the star's story and it's narratively appropriate. I may be back to post ten facts from my stone magic world.

Hello! Welcome to the 17th Shard! And the shardhunt hasn't been happening for a while now, I don't think. You'll be fine, though obviously watch out for Shadows of Self spoilers until you manage to read the Era 2 Mistborn books. Ideas for metal system? Well, I don't know exactly what you mean. If you mean ramifiactions, check out the Mistborn forum, though again, careful of spoilers. If you mean cool other powers, try this thread. Also, there's an incomplete archive at Theoryland, thanks to the WoT fans. The rest is just in the Signing thread, I think.

When you memorize random LotR poems for fun. Also the first few pages of the first chapter. When you understand what the poems are referring to in LotR. -
Oh, I'm not going to finish during NaNo unless I suddenly start churning out 2-3k days every day. My story has six viewpoints. The first (and shortest) was 10k, and the second is already 15k. It'll probably be 20k when it's done, and all of the others will be the same. Thus, a novel that's 110k. That's actually really scary. My novels have never gotten beyond 35k of actual main story (the rest of NaNo is freewriting and work on other stories). Yikes.

Still Having a Bad Day? Exchange Your Rants For Hugs Here!
Elbereth replied to Silverblade5's topic in General Discussion
Random anecdote time! I don't know if you've heard this before, but it cracks me up every time So there's this thing called the SCA, or Society for Creative Anachronisms, which is a group that dresses up like they're from the Middle Ages, pretty accurately, and gather to sing medieval songs and fight and such. So once, there was this little old lady walking home from an SCA meeting, and a mugger with a switchblade accosted her for her money. When she refused, he went to stab her... and the knife slid off of her real, actual chainmail. Thereupon she said, "A six inch knife? I'll see your six, and raise you thirty!" And she drew her real, actual sword and chased him off. Well, I think going to a therapist is a good thing. Just have it be someone you pick, rather than your mom, and go to that therapist before telling your mom you have, so you get the chance to tell your side of the story first. It doesn't even have to be a therapist. Just go to someone you trust. -
Okay. I think I got at least some of it. It's confusing, but I think it makes sense. You're right that it would be so much easier with a whiteboard. Thanks!

Long Game 15: ...The Shards Themselves...
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I'm here! I have actually posted, several times. I have also placed a scanvote, though not an actual vote. I'm having trouble with the "condemning people to die" part, partly because even in real life Mafia I'm more quiet and not prone to voting. But I know I need to get past that, so I promist to place one tomorrow. If I don't, poke me. Also, Venture isn't even in this game. No. There is one difference between a lynch and a mistvote. And that is that if they want to, an Elantrian can negate it. If the traitors have an Elantrian, this is a problem. In effect, we'd only kill innocents and never traitors. What's the AG? Another problem is that there are apparently multiple Mistborn (if all the people that have apparently claimed are Mistborn). Let's say there's three. One is Adavantos' Mistborn. Presumably Adavantos can announce who he's going to target, but what about the other two? Do they target the runner up? That means one of their kills is wasted (unless the person happens to be a Voidbringer). Do they both pick whoever they want, not looking at the order at all? And they don't even know there's another one out there, unless three distinct kills happen. Until that point, they might assume there's two (which there might be). Anyway. Those are my thoughts on the mistvote. EDIT: Ninja'd by Adavantos.- 1686 replies

With our powers combined . . . We can plan a heist!
Elbereth replied to Sir Jerric's topic in Creator's Corner
I didn't have anything immediately in mind. I just wanted clarification. If I do think of something that requires multiple powers (and can't be done just by stealing), I'll go ahead and break the system, but until that point I'll stay single power to single person. Well, I couldn't think of much else. But okay, you have to make them exactly alike. Do they have to be exact in composition, or just in appearance? For instance, if you painted that piece of wood with several layers of white paint until the grain wasn't coming through anymore, and then painted a piece of metal the exact same size and shape with the same technique, could you match them? Petrification sounds great. And yes, I like doing ramifications. It's good practice for my own magic systems, and a lot of fun as well. OOH! That sounds amazing. Okay. Definitely cool ideas there. Also, a couple ideas adapted from my own projects (no obligation to use them, obviously): The ability to touch a person, and then be invisible to everyone else. The ability to enchant something to keep the state it is currently in (kind of goes with temporal shifting) You could use this for stopping bullets, for instance. Maybe the more force applied to it, the more talent it uses up. So you can only stop one bullet, but you can stop lots of knives from cutting into it. The ability to transform your likeness into whatever you're touching. I'm not sure about this, but maybe you could make it workable? If you don't care about conservation of energy (or matter in this case), then the ability to grow or shrink an object. That's all I've got for now. -
The Lonely Chatterboxes Club
Elbereth replied to Mistrunner's topic in Social Groups, Clans, & Guilds
That's the thing. His style does work for me. I guess I just like archaic language and such. That's partly why I liked the Silmarillion even more. But I understand that most people don't feel that way, so I tend to stay queit about my obsession. EDIT: Another part of the reason I liked it is because of how much it expands LotR. For example, until you read the Silmarillion, you don't realize how awesome Galadriel is, and why she's awesome. She's the only person in Middle Earth (with the exception of the wizards, who don't count because they're minor gods) to have seen the light of the Two Trees in Valinor, which were the things that preceded the Sun and the Moon. It's interesting that in Tolkien's mythology, the Sun and Moon are only second best, unlike most myths. Anyway, Galadriel's even more awesome.- 80 replies

I know it's fluff, but it's funny fluff. Well, giving it a limitation of mass would work well. And blood manipulation is something I've played with. But I've also played with an Epic-like character who's quite creepy. He/she can transform skin into a particular grey substance which acts as a kind of replacement skin. He can also affect this material (without needing to touch it), which means he can change its color (making it look like normal skin), and manipulate it. This means anyone he's done this to doesn't realize until their body starts moving without their volition. He can control a person's body rather completely (though he can't make them talk). He can also disguise people quite completely by changing skin color and facial features, which could even result in apparently changed gender, at a cursory glance. I've also toyed with making that substance do things to the nerves, either rubbing them raw and causing constant pain, or maybe isolating them so the person can't feel pain. You know, I feel the same to a point. I'm less interested in the Reckoners setting, though I do know it's ideal for a RP because you can be so creative with powers and the like. I don't mind that it's in America, but I'm also not too interested in dystopia. But for all that, reading through What Happened in Portland is still hugely entertaining.

With our powers combined . . . We can plan a heist!
Elbereth replied to Sir Jerric's topic in Creator's Corner
Oh, good. That makes it much easier to deal with. I'm just asking if it's possible. If powers are randomly granted (which I'm assuming- is there a pattern to who gets powers?), then in theory someone could be randomly granted two powers, right? Is that actually the case, or is there a mechanic in place preventing people frombeing granted two or more powers? Hm. Okay. This is interesting, and probably has a ton of applications. So basically, if you pair two wooden cubes, and then shine a flashlight on one of them, the other one gets brighter? Does the one that you shine the flashlight on get brighter too? What if you put a colored filter over the light? Will the other object reflect that color as well? Can you make a simulacrum of a human? I can't promise I'll actually work on this, given the number of projects I've got going right now. But I can at least do ramifications of the powers. Also, check out the Reckoners RPG list of Epics thread. There might be some inspiration there too. -
Long Game 15: ...The Shards Themselves...
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I had this problem too, so I actually asked a couple of people who they would consider to be most experienced. Here's what I got: Wilson, Alvron, Mailliw, Kasimir, and Kipper. Those were the main five that showed up.Well, it looks like I was wrong about her being a Surgebinder. I'm glad I was, though, or we would have been having even more problems. Are we still doing the kandra/mistborn vote thing? Because I would be fine switching to Bridge Boy if so. We would get more information from Bridge Boy's death, and they seem around equally suspicious to my eyes. And I think we should continue voting until the time of the turnover, tomorrow. I don't see any point in stopping before then. Also, I'm worried about the Surgebinders. We've only had one message thus far, on the first day. Is anyone in contact with a Surgebinder? I just really don't want there to be only one or two, and to have them be inactive (and therefore soon to be killed by a Mistborn, in all likelihood).- 1686 replies
