  1. Hi! Welcome to the 17th Shard! Which books have you read? And anything from Shadows of Self (as well as any major spoilers from other books) are going to be spoilered except in the respective forums for that particular work.
  2. That sounds like a terrible idea for the sake of the sanity of anyone else. Also, while I was typing my Idril post (to be fair, between classes and stuff), you guys added two or three more pages of philsophy.
  3. Okay. Venture, you were difficult, so I decided to give you someone awesome. How about Idril Celebrindal? Daughter of Turgon (who was also pretty cool) and grandaughter of Fingolfin (who I've talked about before, because he's storming awesome). She gives birth to Earendil, who's also amazing. Sometime I'll talk about him, but there are three or four pages of FotR dedicated to a poem about him, so you can tell he's pretty important. She herself is "fairer than all the wonders of Gondolin", which is a SUPER SECRET FORTRESS that her dad built to hide from Morgoth/Melkor. She lives there for a long time (they are elves, after all), and gets creepered by her cousin Maeglin, who is a very twisted person. But she's smart enough to see he's evil, so she stays well away from him, and instead marries Tuor. Then Maeglin starts thinking about betraying Gondolin, and Idril's like, "Tuor we need a way to get out of here. Make a tunnel, dearest. NOW." Which Tuor does, and they escape with their seven-year-old son as Gondolin is being slaughtered. This is the only reason anyone from Gondolin survived at all. She actually dresses in armor, unlike most of Tolkien's females, who tend to use more magic and guile. Tired after all of that fighting and making sure that a few people survive, she and Tuor sail into the West, back to Valinor, though not until she's given her magical green elf-stone to Earendil, which gets passed all the way down to Aragorn, and give him the monarchical name "Elessar", elf-stone. You're next, Edgedancer!
  4. It's the sort of book that's easy to put down and never take back up again. I'm doing the same thing with the Book of Lost Tales right now, which is even worse. But it's worth it in the end. Once you get past Turin, you're good, basically. (I hated that chapter.) There used to be this really great video series that kind of summarized the Silmarillion, called the Silmarillion for Noobs. But apparently the account died or something, because there's only two copies of videos left. Here's the first part, though, about Aragorn's ancestors. It's really great. I will do yours as soon as I pick one for Venture, who is turning out to be surprisingly difficult. This is the best analogy.
  5. Yes. Exactly that. And I know it's not really a big thing, and I don't worry about it much, but still.
  6. I mean, he feels like less of an idiot later, but... He doesn't really change or anything. You just get to see more of his viewpoint. Assuming you're where I think you are. Side note (that turned out to be longer than the actual point): I finally found my copy of the Silmarillion, and I'm very happy. The above stuff was mostly from memory. So, Kobold: Haleth is this girl, part of a tribe that's attacked by Orcs. Her dad, Haldad, brings everyone together and tries to hold out against the Orcs, but he is slain (along with her brother). At that point, Haleth holds the people (who have just lost their leader and their hope) together for seven full days against the Orcs before help arrives from the Elves. Then the Elves that come say "Humans actually aren't that bad. Wanna swear fealty to us?" Haleth's like, "Nope, sorry. Why would I swear an oath of servitude to anyone else? Head out, team! We're moving west!" (not actual wording) And so they make her their chieftain, and move west to Thingol's lands. (Thingol's interesting. Maybe I'll rant about him sometime.) And Thingol almost says "Get off my land!" but someone else, hearing of the hardships they had to go through to get there, says "Let them stay, pleease?" And Thingol says, "Fine. But you have to guard the bridge within the land you have claimed from Orcs." Haleth replies, "My father and brother were killed by Orcs. If you think we won't kill any Orcs in our land, you're an Elvish idiot." And she remains chieftain for the rest of her days, and her people come to be known as the people of Haleth. The Silmarillion is full of such epic stories, seriously.
  7. Here's what the LEAVE-ME-ALONEIZER 2000™ has this to say for itself: "I am a stick."
  8. Difficult. Wit's a good choice for me, as is Vin. For completely different reasons. Also, I identify with Elend's bookish awkwardness. I am exactly the person who would bring a book to a party and spend the entire time reading it. Especially if it was WoR. Have you read any of Brandon's non-Cosmere books?
  9. Anytime! Who's been your favorite character of all the books so far?
  10. Hi! Welcome to the 17th Shard! The only major Cosmere books you're missing are Mistborn Era 2 (Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self), and Warbreaker. Then after that there's some short stories (Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, and Sixth of the Dusk, namely, as well as a little one on Brandon's website called The Hope of Elantris), and one novella, called The Emperor's Soul, which takes place on the same world as Elantris but in a very different setting. It's also very Cosmere-aware. Hope that helps! Welcome!
  11. I did always like that moment, yes.
  12. When there are leaves swirling in random whirlpools and your first thought is "windspren!" (Props to Allomancy for reminding me of this incident)
  13. I do a similar thing. And often I also do the opposite. Sometimes I've been PMing on here (or on other sites) for hours with someone, and then I have to go off suddenly before I can respond to the latest post, and I worry "what if they think I just don't have anything to say?", etc. When it happens to me, I generally convince myself "oh, he's sleeping" or "she's going to class" or something, but still.
  14. I mean, if you want amazing combat skills, you can go bigger than Legolas. Fingolfin is uber awesome. He challenged Melkor to single combat. For your information, Sauron was Melkor's servant. Furthermore, as Fingolfin was trumpeting his challenge, Melkor refused to come out until he realized that he would lose the respect and fear of his servants if he didn't face down this elf lord. That's right. The most powerful god, the god of evil was afraid of Fingolfin. So Melkor comes out to fight, right? And Fingolfin wounds him seven times. Yes, seven. But Melkor is kind of a god, so he can't really be killed. He's wielding Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, which Fingolfin is desperately trying to avoid. But eventually, Fingolfin stumbles, and Morgoth pins him under his foot. But just before Melkor brings his hammer down to kill Fingolfin, Fingolfin stabs him in the foot in one last act of defiance. Fingolfin died, but Melkor walked with a limp for the rest of his life. Fingolfin's storming spectacular. EDIT: I'm basically doing nothing but chattering about LotR. Chatter away!
  15. Okay, okay, okay. Characters forthcoming.EDIT: First, Slowswift. I don't know you all that well, so I'll give you a choice. I know you like astronomy, and I would give you Varda (the star goddess) but that'd be weird (because that's me), and Tilion and Earendil are male. (Someone should take Earendil. He's really awesome.) You can, however have Arien, who is the goddess who carries the sun across the sky. Alternatively, you could try Elwing, who is a storming awesome half-elf, the granddaughter of Beren and Luthien. She throws herself off of a cliff to save the Silmaril from the hands of Feanor's sons, and out of pity Ulmo (the sea god) transforms her into a swan, wherupon she flies to her love Earendil and gives him the Silmaril, allowing him to save the world (simplification, but true) and become Venus (again, oversimplified). She eventually becomes not-a-swan again, but she can still talk to them. She's quite cool. She's also Elrond's mother and Aragorn's (distant) ancestor. Venture, you're up next once I sing "What A Wonderful World" for my sister so she can try to accompany me.
  16. I was referring to real stories, but they can be twisted by the storyteller slightly. And I'm considering having it being the world's current version of the story, rather than the true story. Maybe.
  17. THIS. This happens to me all the time, and I sit there thinking, I never have problems with my mom. And also, I've met your parents. They seemed really nice. Why are you complaining about them? It's different if you have a legitimate complaint like Twi, but if you're just saying "Ugh. I hate my dad because he's so strict!" No. You do not have my pity, person. Appreciate your parents.
  18. Wyrm has said that even if you're killed while Forged, the original role will still show up. So that wouldn't work. I understand mostly where you're coming from, though. EDIT: But it does count towards the HI if you're the last Hemalurgist and you're Forged into not being one, the HI turns. So I guess you wouldn't want to be Forged if you're the last one. As far as we know, there are still two left. Unless one of them was a traitor lying about his/her role, which is possible but unlikely given the HI's abilities.
  19. I meant when night comes around. Will we be able to PM then? Also, more comments. Okay. I mean, I still think it's possible that they killed him simiply because he was a Surgebinder, but for all I know it's both. At the very least, I think it's fairly likely that they knew. I'm confused by what you mean. You think the reason he forged Stink was to make Stink not a Hemalurgist? But first of all, Stink's actions (looking for someone else to be forged) doesn't imply a Hemalurgist. A Hemalurgist would want to be Forged, because a couple days later when they reverted back to being a Hemalurgist, they would be able to know if the HI had turned or not. And thus BB wouldn't want to Forge Hemalurgists either, because when they reverted, they would out the HI. Though that wouldn't matter too much at this point from what I've seen, given how little Hellscythe has been talking. I'm glad Bridge Boy is dead. Unless the eliminators have another Forger (which seems unlikely), that means they can't Forge any other roles onto eliminators. That's encouraging. We'll have to be very careful who we Forge the new Forger's role onto, though, even though I know it's not permanent. Maybe we could vote for that?
  20. Mistborn Era 2 is important, particularly if you want to discuss Cosmere stuff. Also, the Rithmatist and the Alcatraz books are totally worth a read, even if they are written for kids. The Legion novellas are also pretty good. For his short stories: Sixth of the Dusk and Shadows for Silence have already been mentioned. I'll add Perfect State, Defending Elysium, and Firstborn, which are all non-Cosmere, but still good, and the last two are available online for free. There's also The Hope of Elantris, which is a short story to go with Elantris, and also available online. So there's a few more, but nothing major except arguably Mistborn Era 2. There's a thread around with a list of works by other authors kind of similar to Brandon's work, which I can link to if you want.
  21. Um... I have no idea how to feel about that, other than slightly disturbed. Also, Morzahoth, take a look at Glaurung as well. Not only is he the first dragon, he does a whole lot of creepy stuff. Mostly hypnosis on Turin and his sister Nienor. In essense, he hypnotizes Turin so that he can't move as his love is carried past him in chains, yelling and screaming for his help. Then he erases Nienor's entire memory (including clothes, what a "hand" is, and even language). As a consequence, Turin finds her wandering in the woods, and takes her in, and cares for her... And marries her.... And they have children... I hate the tale of Turin. It's really depressing and horrible. And apparently I'm suddenly the Tolkien matchmaker. How did that happen?
  22. That's not the only reason Dow could have been killed. He was also a Surgebinder, so if a traitor found that out, that would be an adequate reason to kill him. Also, Wyrm, can we still PM? I mean, I assume so, but confirmation would be good.May post more later. EDIT: Ninja'd by 5 that I can't read right now.
  23. Well, if you want a Balrog, you could try Gothmog. Or you could have Carcaras! Actually, no. The biggest wolf ever should go to Winter. And Twi, you might like Huan. He's a wise hound who can only speak three times, and uses his speech to help Beren and Luthien love each other. Kobold... I'll have to think about it. Maybe Haleth? Haleth is pretty awesome. She was the first female human in the Silmarillion, and she basically musters her tribe and refuses to swear allegiance to elves, because she doesn't need their help. (It's been a while, so I might have gotten some of that wrong, but she was awesome regardless.)
  24. Hi! Welcome to the 17th Shard! And while we have cookies, that doesn't mean you should eat them... Which books have you read?
