  1. Yeah, fixing General Rules is a work in progress. There will definitely be a thread (General Rules or separate) titled/subtitled START HERE, because we definitely need it.
  2. Yes and yes; I'm guessing 48/24 but Straw will have to confirm. On a similar housekeeping note, is there a vote minimum? What happens on ties? EDIT: @Kynedath we've had literal panda and stick characters, and much weirder names. Topaz does way less to break immersion than having to write a horse-shaped robot named UNIT 002. You're good.
  3. Matrim, Xino, and Silber, you've all been added to the GM PM, where people will occasionally ask for co-GMs. There might also be a co-GM signup list going up somewhere soon, once I'm slightly less busy. If it does, your names will be the first three on the list!
  4. Status update on all the threads! The Championships thread is hidden and unpinned when it's not currently in use (or should be; I'm not sure if that happened this past year but it is generally what we do), so that'll free up one slot. Art of Game Creation is just fine, I think, and will stay as it is. We're currently thinking of replacing this thread with a thread like the one discussed, to get rid of four years of clutter, and move most meta-relevant discussion to our Discord server, which is where the vast majority of it has been anyway. That would be a thread to announce game signups, request pinchhitters, and ask general questions. General Rules is also getting a redo at some point, because it's... somewhat outdated. That is slightly further down the road, because it needs a fairly significant rework, but will happen. SEAcropolis is dead and sad and has been for a long time. Does anyone have thoughts on how to change that / what to do about that? Because I haven't got anything yet. Please be patient with the mods, as doing things is hard and we are busy. But feel free to comment on any of the above!
  5. No. Please do not copy-paste or screenshot PMs with other players nor the GM.
  6. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Thanks to Brightness for running this - it's always great to see more Reckoners games! Congrats to the village for winning, and I hope to see you in the next game! As always, if anyone would like to try their hand at running a game, please get ahold of Wilson, Fifth Scholar, Devotary of Spontaneity, or myself. Not only will we get you added to the list, but we'd also be more than willing to help out in any way we can. You can also ask questions and get some hints and feedback from everyone in our Art of Game Creation thread. With all the games that we've run so far, we have plenty of experienced GMs that can help you refine any game you're thinking about. If you would rather keep some detail secret, or are self-conscious about posting in thread (there's really no need to be; while we do slaughter each other, we are very polite about it), then I'm sure one of our fantastic committee members (Amanuensis, Araris Valerian, Stink, Elandera, or Sart) would be more than willing to help you out in private. Thanks again to everyone that played, and we look forward to killing seeing you in future games!
  7. Well, it seems it's time to wrap things up with this game. It was a blast to run, and to watch everyone play - congrats to the evil team for winning yet again, and I can't wait to see if the village can break the curse next year. I always love to see who comes back for the AGs, and remembering all over again what a fantastic community this is. See you next year, I hope! Also, for posterity, here's the spreadsheet we forgot to ever link to. As always, if anyone would like to try their hand at running a game, please get ahold of Wilson, Fifth Scholar, Devotary of Spontaneity, or myself. 8. I did suggest that, but you can be forgiven for not reading my monster of a post closely enough to notice. I like the flavor of destroying the Arcane fields more, but I agree that any 5 fields might be more feasible.
  9. I'm not sure what I think about this. Or... I think starting with EP in a field of your choice sounds like a good idea, and gets the game going faster / allows us to do distribution. I'm not sure about a starting elevation, nor some people having EP and others not, because one of the things I really like about this game is that the whole idea is that everyone starts on basically equal footing and can go in whatever direction they want from there. Yeah that's 100% a no. Mm. It was pretty random between who got what punishment - that's perhaps something to look into, I suppose. That said, generally when people piled on one person the reason they didn't get expelled wasn't the Masters' DP but instead that they were dead/insane/a Master already. So that should be fixed, at least. I'm not precisely sure about the balance between PC Masters' DP, NPC Masters' DP, and player votes. I think it's something we should leave for the present, but keep an eye on in the next iteration to see if that's right once the OoA is fixed. Yep. I don't know of a better system than 200 words that doesn't introduce bloat in other ways (any game related discussion = lots of short posts, total word count = incentive to be long winded + harder for the GMs, anything else introduces lots of GM bias), but I definitely disliked people saying 'well that's my 200 words, I'll be back to post the rest of my thoughts later' and similar. I definitely like RP being worth more than game discussion - it's one of the things that makes this game so RP-centric, which I love. That said, I wouldn't be opposed to doubling the worth of the game discussion, so it's only 5x as much, just to make that give you a little more. This is true, but I think it should be fine - first, people want to go into those fields anyway and I doubt that Skindancers going in will stop them, which then gives Skindancers plenty of cover. Secondly, it isn't as much of a railroad if their other win condition is reasonably balanced enough to go for it. That said, if it proves to be problematic in a future run, I could see switching to needing to destroy 5 fields total of the Skindancers' choice. Okay, one, while it's technically true that the Skindancers have to kill insane students, in practicality that isn't the case - the same way as 'kill all villagers' means 'kill enough villagers that they have no way to stop you from winning at that point'. We wouldn't extend the game once every Student was dead or insane. I think changing the win condition to reflect that would be fine, since it's essentially true in the first place. I think that at least for the moment, killing expelled players is still a requirement - they're helped there by the fact that sabotages on expelled players are automatically kills, which goes through protection a lot faster, especially with the changes to protection we made this game. (And we made a mistake too - Elandera's bodyguard cost 30 talents because of a mistake we made in telling her that, but should've cost 60. Grams were a little more common because of adding Rover, but even then one only got stocked every few turns.) With almost certainly being masters at that point, I don't think getting rid of the expelled players would be a problem, but it'd be enough of a challenge that they'd still have to go through with it. More generally, on their win conditions: I just don't know. I honestly have no idea if the kill-all-students win con is balanced or not. My worry is essentially that late game, the villagers are so OP that the Skindancers can't compete with their few remaining players - seriously, in the last couple of turns everyone was an El'the and there were several PC Masters. The power curve of the game is such that for most of the game it's fine, but I think that endgame is potentially too difficult for Skindancers at present - even without Araris, Burnt could make Bone-tar. We had at least two other El'the with at least one level in Artificery, which meant several Grams and Bloodless floating around. We didn't have any Sympathy El'the students, but if we had then Malfeasance protection would've been a pain to deal with. Etc. I also didn't particularly like how the elevations completely dried out at the end, so my tentative thought would be to have some system in which fields aren't guaranteed to have elevations so they're spread out over a longer period of time. I think it was maybe a little more powerful than it should've been this game on average, but the main counteracting factor is the high IP risk more than anything else. You can do a lot, but the more you want to do the shorter your life out of the Crockery will be. I think in general where we need to be careful isn't just Wind - which was pretty well balanced - nor 4 names, where you can do ridiculous things because you're nearly guaranteed to go insane (and I'll note that what Araris wanted was a little more powerful than what we ended up deciding on, too - it originally only subverted Fae protection and also blocked Fae roleblocks). But there are times when things that people want out of 2 names are more suited to 3, I think, and we need to be careful that 2 names (which is only a +3 IP, so a 1/12 chance of going insane) isn't too powerful. Hm. I wouldn't be opposed to having abilities in a specific order ala Alchemy or Artificery, though I do kind of like the randomness aspect - and having that scale would only make the power curve for late game even more pronounced. I'm really happy with how Linguistic Analysis happened this game, honestly. I'd note that the second time Bard was scanned as lying, it was only due to one singular lie (unfortunately ), which wasn't his reads list - he just had to be very careful about phrasing. It's powerful, maybe too powerful, but I'm not sure how I'd change it unless we go with the being-an-El'the-ability notion. Similarly, I'd be open to suggestions on how to change Hand Delivery to make it better - I agree it's a little weak, but I don't know how I'd make it better. Also, honestly, part of the perk of getting elevated in Linguistics is that you get a second general action period to use on whatever you want, so I'm not too concerned. If we were to scale progression.... I'm not sure, but I think we might tie it to level rather than rank? Because I don't see a way to split up the abilities into levels, nor do I really want to. So for posterity (i.e. our future selves ) I'd do: Linguistics: First level - Hand delivery (it'd definitely have to be buffed in this case though) Second level - Mysterious Bulletins Third level - Bribe the Messenger Master - Linguistic Analysis Archives: First level - Omen Recognition Second level - School Records Third level - Fae Lore Master - Banned Books R&L: First level - Argumentum ad Nauseam Second level - Proficient in Hyperbole Third level - Persuasive Arguments Master - Law of Contraposition Anyway. Something to think on. ...I kind of like that drastic fix, actually. So you could be sure of the answer to the first question, but increasingly less sure of the truth of others. That... could work. Yeah, agreed that the Windy Tower shouldn't be in the top two. The spreadsheeting wouldn't be too awful on that, but my inclination is potentially to switch the Golden Pony and the Windy Tower but add another lodging on top (Hael suggested something very expensive which gives -1 IP, and I kind of like that). Either way, I think -2 votes could be reasonable for the Golden Pony. As addressed above, they'd have to kill the expelled players but not the insane ones. Anyway - I think this game went really well! We got the rollover not including the writeup down to about 2 hours between the two of us, which is fantastic - there are still some things I'd like to do to the spreadsheet, and Hael and I are seriously considering just straight up coding it for next time, but this version was a massive improvement and we made far fewer mistakes all of which were pretty fixable. I'm very happy with how this game went, and I'm excited to run it again in a year or two! (low key want this to become an annual midsummer thing but also no)
  10. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Thanks to Fifth and Devotary for such a wonderful game, and for taking LG20 and doing a pretty good job of un-breaking it. Congrats to the village for winning, and to Aman for fooling nearly everyone nearly the entire game. (Except me. ) This game was incredibly fun for me, and I think the sentiment was shared across the board. See you in the next game, and I hope it's as good as this one was! As always, if anyone would like to try their hand at running a game, please get ahold of Wilson, Fifth Scholar, Devotary of Spontaneity, or myself. 11. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Many thanks to Bard for running such a fun game - I laughed so hard when I first saw the ruleset. An all-Tineye game with different types of Tineyes is honestly hilarious, and it'd be interesting to see it in a non-blackout format someday, perhaps. Congrats to the elims for winning, and see you all next game! 12. Well, time for my own game to close. This game was a blast to run, and I definitely hope to rerun some version of it in the future - the voting for who you trust is something I'd absolutely love to see done again in the future, because it's a really interesting twist. (Technically I already have rerun it, but MR38a was just a good example of what not to do in this kind of game. ) Well done to the village for winning, and thank you all for your excellent LotR RP. Also, thanks to the eliminators for a fantastic eliminator doc, containing some of the best RP/writeup suggestions I've ever had. Anyway - the Ring is safely on its way to Mount Doom, and we must take a different road. See you in the next game! As always, if anyone would like to try their hand at running a game, please get ahold of Wilson, Fifth Scholar, Devotary of Spontaneity, or myself. 13. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Many thanks to Elandera for such a lovely game - I had great fun in it, even if I only pinchhit, got extremely lucky, and then died. Well done to the eliminators for managing to scrape out a victory, and especially to Rath for being an excellent Deep One. See you in the next game! 14. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Many thanks to Kas for such a fantastic game - despite having to restart Cycle 1, this game went very well (especially in comparison to MR7 ). I had incredible fun with Ellira, my character, largely due to Kas' wonderful writeups (which honestly I highly encourage you all to go back and read purely on the basis of the storytelling they contain). Plus, the ruleset was really interesting to play with, and I'd like to see another Avalon take - maybe one in which I don't completely screw up being the Reform Spy handler? Regardless - well done to Discovery for winning, to the village for successfully concealing the Reform Spy, and I hope to see you all in the next game! 15. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Very well done to Elandera for managing her first time GMing so well despite not having a co-GM and it being anonymous! The writeups were absolutely excellent as well - I always love Emperor's Soul settings, and they seem to routinely come with great writeups. Congrats to Tess, Fura, and HH for squeezing a win out of the game, and I hope to see you all playing again soon! 16. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Many thanks to Lumgol for running such a fun game, and managing it well even with so few players. (Also, that aftermath writeup is hilarious.) Well done to Stick for being an excellent inquisitor, and I'd also like to point out the interesting discussion re: experienced players that was had in the aftermath for being important and level-headed. 17. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Many thanks to Straw for running this game - LG2 is a classic conversion game that really doesn't see enough use. Well done to BR/Elandera for being great Inquisitors, and to the village for ferreting them out. See you in the next game! 18. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Thanks to Joe for a wonderful rerun of a wonderful game - QF14 is one of my best memories from early in my SE games, and this one did not disappoint either. Congrats to Drake for winning the game completely for himself - not that dissimilar to QF14's ending, in fact. I had loads of fun in this game, and I would love to see a third run sometime in the future. The setting is so much fun to play with, and Joe's games are always hilarious. 19. It's well past time for this game to be closed up. Many thanks to Sart for the conclusion of his Rithmatist game series - somehow it seems that no one else sets things in that world, but Sart's set are excellent enough to make up for it. Plus, it's always lovely to see a relatively simple Long Game where everyone can focus on analysis. Congrats to the Forgotten for winning in near-record time, and I hope to see you again in the next game! 20. It's well past time for this game to be closed up, with nearly a year since the last post. Many thanks to Bard and Tess for this fantastic game - we so rarely get First of the Sun games, and this one is both that and a sci-fi game. Makes me nostalgic for my first game, LG15. Congrats to the Saboteurs for winning, and see you in the next game! 21. Long Game 65 Aftermath - Empty Chairs at Empty Tables The Horse and Four was quiet, this time of night. Even the most industrious drinkers had finally gone to bed, preparing for the next day’s dawn, and only a couple of students hard at work due the next day were still awake. So no one noticed, when the wind outside started to pick up. No one noticed when something small landed on the roof with a dull thump. But everyone noticed when the bone-tar exploded. It tore a hole in the roof, killing most of the top floor instantly, and the wooden building quickly caught fire. People on lower floors came out of their rooms, curious what all the noise was about, and the cry of “Fire! Fire!” soon had them rushing out the doors of the inn - where they found themselves buffeted by a strong wind pushing them back. Some escaped the building, those strong enough to make it through the wind, but others couldn’t - they ran to other doors, frantic to find a way out, but there was not, and that time cost them. Vol knew what this was, could tell from the smell of the fire, and wanted to find the source of whoever had been mad enough to bring bone-tar into a crowded inn. But Inesta, Vol’s bodyguard, had been purchased for just this purpose - that is, common sense. “No,” she said firmly. “The building is on fire, and we are leaving.” And with that, she hoisted Vol up on her shoulder and ran out. Arael Solon made it out - barely. He had been only a floor below the top one, and woke up in a bed already on fire. The use of the Name of Fire pulled the flames away from him, but his skin was already scorched black in places. He managed to call upon Wind to take him away, but his wounds were severe enough that even with the Medica could not be certain he would fully recover. Vol, Kendel, and Bryn Aria stood before the Horns together. Vol looked absolutely murderous, while Bryn Aria had a slight smirk on her face and Kendel just looked confused. Master Veitch stood to speak. “You are a disgrace to this University. You used the learning you’ve had here to destroy an entire building and kill many of those inside it, for no reason you can explain. You are hereby expelled from the University, and we have decided that Vol and Kendel will also be lashed as an example to others. Bryn, consider yourself lucky to have only been expelled.” Vol started to argue, “But Mas-” “Dismissed.” The Master Linguist sat down and turned his eyes to his fellow Masters, clearly ignoring them. Vol still looked angry, but Bryn Aria tugged on a sleeve and Vol reluctantly turned to follow. The doors closed behind them with a dull, final thud. A few minutes later, the doors opened again, and a slender figure slipped in. “Ah, Rath, welcome back,” Master Leo said genially. “Hard to believe it’s a new term already, isn’t it?” Rath nodded. “Excited to be back, sir.” “Good, good. Now, I suppose we should get on to the testing...” Arael paid little mind to Leo’s question, instead staring at Rath. Could he be a Skindancer? Could one of his fellow Masters? Some of them had been acting odd lately, and he’d noticed Rath a few places he shouldn’t have been. He stared down at his burnt, nearly-unusable hands. He was close to cracking, he knew. He’d used too many Names, too fast, and now it was only a matter of time before he went fully insane. He had to find the Skindancers before that. He shuddered to think what a Skindancer Master Namer could do with that power, especially if some of the Masters were already Fae. Arael Solon closed his eyes. Okay then. Here goes. When it was his turn to question Rath, he stood. Then Arael Solon, Master Namer, called on Blood. He could feel the blood running through his veins, and the blood of everyone else in the room pulsing and pumping and constantly flowing. He named Water next, focusing on the blood he could sense, and urged it to heat up, flow faster - that was when the other Masters started to react, to demand to know what he was doing and telling him to stop. Then Iron. Iron on the doors, sealing them closed. Iron on the swords, the grams, warping them into uselessness. If he was going to do this, no one would escape. Finally, Arael Solon named Fire. And every droplet of blood in that room boiled. They screamed then, but not long. Arael tried to stay silent, but the pain was too intense - after a moment he screamed too, and his was the last to ring out in that room. When they managed to get the doors open the next day, the corpses of nine Masters and a student were all they found. Two of the Masters were only recognizable because of their robes, though: their forms had changed upon death to be grotesque and inhuman. There was a silence over the University, and it was a silence of three parts. It was the long, sad silence of a closed University. Tables sat empty in the inns and in the Archives, a reminder of those who had gone, and the seats at the Horns were not filled again for a long, long time. It was the quiet, relieved silence at the end of catastrophe: the deaths stopped after that, and all that was left to do was bury the bodies. And it was the crackling, broken silence of a man who killed as he died. Arael Solon (Araris) went insane and died! He was a Student! Lasko Veitch (Karnage) died! He was a Student! Leo (Lopen) died! He was a Skindancer! Shard (Experience) died! He was a Skindancer! Rath died! He was a Student! Bryn Aria (Burnt) was attacked and protected! Vol (Devotary) was attacked and protected! Vol (Devotary) was brought on the Horns and charged with Conduct Unbecoming a Member of the Arcanum! She has been expelled! 22. *sigh* You weren't billed your tuition, again, because I need to remember that when I fix a thing I then have to copy it everywhere else so it stays fixed. New totals will be PMed out in the morning, but just do some basic subtraction and you'll be fine.
  23. Agreed on this point. I didn't read the rules carefully enough, and assumed it had stayed the same. Fair. I'm fairly surprised that I played as well as I did, given I haven't been evil in at least a year. I also apologize for my late-game inactivity - apparently being evil makes me stressed and therefore I don't want to interact. I'll work on that in the future. Thanks to Straw for running, and everyone go check out the next MR!
  24. *sigh* I hate my nonexistent sleep schedule. Kidpen, I’ll try to be back on in the morning but don’t count on it.
