Honestly, it might still not be used. I don’t know for sure, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if people choose not communicating over chance of communication being stolen - I can remember at least one past game where something akin to that happened. I’m not sure it’s particularly rational, but the avoidance of low-risk problems in this kind of context isn’t unusual.

@Tani it's listed in the first post of this thread, and at the top of the signup sheet. (It's not the same as when SE started; it didn't exist until I think AG4? ) @Kasimir Probably? PM spying is always interesting. Although it is a massive pain for you as a GM, so. I probably wouldn't, because I've done enough of that for one lifetime

Anniversary Game 8 / AN11: Back to Beginnings

Day Three: New and Old Homes “So who lived in this house beforehand?” Loenthal asked Maill, the town cobbler. He stood in front of a two-story townhouse, a solid stone-and-brick structure built in the old style, perfectly symmetrical with minimal frills and only useful additions: a small balcony, a wraparound porch and high windows overlooking both the town and the wide, ash-swept plains. He’d seen it before, of course, but had never believed it to be in anything approaching livable condition. There were many haunts like this scattered throughout the Dominances: old, stately buildings inhabited by noble families who, one by one, found themselves swallowed in the mists of time or moved to another place, leaving shells on the landscape: shells that ordinary skaa had been too afraid to take up and inherit. There were several in Tyrian, but as the Loenthals had been the only ruling family in town for as long as Ischarus could remember, it hadn’t even occurred to him to visit these places. But Maill apparently knew something different. “Well, it was always a strange place, this one,” the cobbler mused. “Lived near it for a decade and I always swore it was empty, save for mistwraiths and dogs and whatever else dared to venture into it every now and then. A year ago some random nobleman I’d never heard of, Ardler or something like that, he tries to clean the place up, and by all accounts succeeds. But you never saw him except at night. He slipped out a month or two ago when he heard of the Lord Ruler’s fall. Guess he got scared we skaa might start getting nosy. But he left the house in good shape, and I thought, well, since your old place got trashed by the Spiked and might be vulnerable…” He trailed off. Loenthal smiled. “It’ll work marvellously, I’m sure. Thank you, friend.” He looked down at the child beside him. “Ready, pal?” The boy–no, Vincero, that was his name, looked up at him seriously, but nodded. Neither Henry nor any of the town merchants with access to public records could find any mention of the child or his parents, so Loenthal had made the decision to functionally adopt him until the whole mess blew over. Least I can do for him, really, he thought to himself. It didn’t resolve why the child was so secretive, or spent so much of the day asleep, or barely talked, but at least he wasn’t Spiked, and that couldn’t be said for most of the people floating around him. The child had finally given his name–a bit of an odd one, and definitely foreign, but Loenthal didn’t care what it was so long as he finally got to talk with him. A conviction had been growing in him, slowly but steadily, that the army’s appearance and Vincero’s weren’t separate. What the connection was, though, still eluded him. He pushed the nagging thoughts aside, determined to get his rest and set up in the new house. Maill was right–the quarters were pleasant as could be hoped, and he sank into his bed gladly. He was fast asleep when the town guard, stopped by Vincero at the door as the new secretary, came to report Henry missing from the prison. Henry whistled cheerfully, strolling through the open night air of Tyrian Falls. Imprison him, a Soother, in pun jail? Ludicrous. He’d dampened the guards’ sense of suspicion, snuck a lockpick and strong drink into his jacket, and one animating conversation, a vial of brass, and two hours later, he was free of their grasp. He debated going to Loenthal and re-offering his services, but decided against it. He must have been an unwanted piece of merchandise, because he was absolutely free, and this town was like food poisoning–it held too much danger for him to stomach. He would set off for Tathingdwen in the Northern Dominance, where the people were more sane and the opportunities more numerous. Passing by the residential district, he saw the priest kneeling in the street, praying to the Survivor again. Or was it the force of Preservation itself? He never understood that man’s devotional schedule, which had apparently kept him out of the town’s affairs for days now. Then he blinked, adjusting his glasses. What was that moving behind him? The next five seconds passed in a blur. A bulky shadow stepped out of the alleyway behind the priest, who was still distracted. Producing a club from beneath a cloak, he swung, connecting solidly with his back. A nasty cracking sound was heard. The priest went flying, body soaring into the street. Just then, a shower of coins whistled down the alleyway, tearing the paralyzed frame to shreds. Henry panicked. Ducking down a side street, he lay as still as possible in the shadows, hoping the pair of murderers passed him by in the night. He had to get out of this town. It was cursed, and soon, he would be too. Scarlet Octopus was a Village Tineye! Ivory Dragonfly’s player has dropped out and has been replaced by a pinch-hitter. Yes, I just forgot that since the writeup wasn't in yet, you wouldn't actually see the differentiation. >> Four. The one with the image didn't work the first time and I had to go back and fix it, but each quote box is a distinct Tineye message. -

Oops, good point. That'll be shown in the writeup, but Magenta Albatross was attacked by a Coinshot and Opal Lion was killed by the Spiked. -

Day 2: Wraithed in Fear Loenthal nodded wearily, hearing the last report of the Riggs mess from Kellehrt. The man’s tale was interesting and well-told, especially for the farmer he claimed to be, but it was discursive and he was too tired to appreciate most of its finer points. He waved a hand. “Thank you, sir, but I’m probably about done for the night. I need sleep more than another account of this rusted mess. It’ll get clearer once I’m rested enough.” He smiled in what he thought was an encouraging way, but with the mass of bandages on his head, covering the blinded eye and swollen face around it, it was more despondent than he perhaps intended. He sighed, then turned to the child beside him in the small courtyard as Kellehrt bowed and filed away down the darkening and ash-covered streets. He’d tried to find the child’s parents, but amidst the chaos of the killings, it hadn’t been a priority. “You’ll have to come with me for the night again, bud. Still not gonna tell me who you are?” The boy shook his head adamantly. “Alright, well, you’re stuck with me then. Let’s ask Mr. Dyring for a room and we can both get our sleep.” Mr. Dyring was, of course, pleased with the nobleman’s coin, though less happy at the prospect of a child soiling his newly rearranged establishment. He set the pair up in beds on the ground floor, and shoved an armful of washcloths and a broom into Loenthal’s hands with a significant look. Ischarus smiled slightly. “He shouldn’t mess anything up, other than intruders. Saved my life earlier today, you know. But that’s a story for another time.” Dyring’s eyes widened, looking at the child curiously, who averted his gaze and followed Loenthal to their quarters. After a quick, late supper on provisions he’d brought, Loenthal was asleep, bandaged face finally settling into lines of rest. The child lay for a while on the mattress, then stood up, legs dangling off the side, listening to the muted chatter from the common room. Then, making sure Loenthal was well and truly asleep, he opened the door a crack and slipped out into its shadows, bare feet noiseless against the cold floor of the inn. Pendel Haven was at the inn later than was his custom. Dyring tolerated him, of course, as he drank primarily milk and not any of the ale and wine which created drunken stupors, and thus, the dreaded mess. He looked down into his cup, resisting the temptation to get stronger spirits to drown the mess in his own head, and glanced up at the innkeep. “Who was that child with Lord Ischarus?” he asked, almost to himself. “Hmm?” said Dyring distractedly, wiping down the other countertop, where a slightly dazed customer was still muttering away to himself. “The child with Lord Ischarus,” Pendel repeated. “Don’t recognise the kid. Where’s he from?” Dyring shrugged. “Apparently he saved the Lord’s life or something. I didn’t ask, they both seemed tired so I sent them straight away to their rooms. Speaking of which, will you be needing one of those?” Pendel glanced out the open window. It was completely dark out again, mists beginning to swirl in the silent streets. “I’ll brave the night. My house isn’t too far from here. Thanks for tolerating me though.” He put another two boxings on the countertop and pulled a heavy cloak around him, looking back at the commons as he reached the door. The dimly lit room seemed smaller, somehow, infinitely small against the world of mist and shadow outside, yet more cosy and habitable than he had ever seen it, and he felt a brief and unreasoning stab of panic at the thought of venturing alone. Probably one of those rusting memories he didn’t need crammed into his head, making him jumpy at nothing. Behind him, he saw the other man get up as well. The muttering was disconcerting him, but he tried not to let it show, holding open the door and letting him pass through into the grey haze. With a nod to Dyring, and seeing the mists begin to curl into the room, he shut the inn door, leaving three sets of feet, only two of them expected, out in the streets of Tyrian Falls. He walked steadily, not fearing the mists as many skaa did. Mistwraiths were shy as a rule, and he’d never found reason to fear the dark besides the people within it, whom he trusted, having lived in Tyrian his whole life. With the recent rumours, though, and the killings…He quickened his pace instinctively. It was enough to make one question even old Dyring’s face of concealing dark designs. Anyone was a threat to anyone, if you pushed them to desperation. Pendel stopped suddenly, hearing a padding of hurried feet behind him as he’d sped up. He peered into the swirling darkness, and with widened eyes picked out the face of the boy who’d arrived with Loenthal. The child was holding Ischarus’ old family ring in his hand, whose red and blue design burnt a faint light through the mist, and looked up fearlessly at Pendel. Pendel cursed himself for not being more careful leaving the inn. He knelt to speak to the child. “Why are you following me? You should be in bed.” He pressed the child’s hand closed over the ring and pointed back down the silent street towards Dyring’s establishment, whose yellow windows still very faintly could be traced through the nighttime vapours. The boy stared back at him. “I can sense the mistwraiths,” he said seriously. “They’re all around. They’re coming for you. For the other one too.” He looked mournful, almost formal in his announcement. Pendel smiled nervously. “Listen, I’ve seen a mistwraith, and I came back alive from it. Don’t let your parents or Lord Ischarus scare you with those old stories. But you need to go back to the inn.” He held out his hand, but the child stepped back. “I know how to avoid them,” he said. “I’ll find my own way.” With that, he ran off into the mist, back towards the inn. Pendel pivoted, intending to follow and make sure he returned, but a stray sound from the other end of the alley made him freeze, a clattering almost, like the drop of a boxing. Was the child right about the wraiths? Was he real at all? The mists seemed more vicious than ever, almost predatory in their concealing blanket. He peered through their haze and the light rain of ash which had begun to fall, listening intently for the slightest sound. He fancied he heard footsteps, and tensed, scarcely daring to breathe. A loud, harsh cry greeted his ears, and he made a split-second decision, flattening himself against the ground. An annoyed long-winged bird, who had made the call, flew off into the mists to avoid being struck by his falling body. There was a whistle of air being cut, and a cloud of coins zipped by in the space where Pendel’s body had just been. The bird was torn to shreds, and a faint curse came from the end of the alleyway. Pendel rolled to the side and took off at a dash down a side alley, wide-eyed with terror. Not a wraith, but an Allomantic vigilante. He thanked the Ja and every other deity he knew that he knew the streets of Tyrian as well as he did, as he took a winding course with many turns and redoublings, still sprinting at full speed towards refuge from a night filled with more dangerous wraiths than he had ever expected to find. Opal nodded in thanks to Pendel as Pendel held the inn door open, pausing Opal’s muttering thoughts long enough to avoid seeming crazier than most people undoubtedly already thought of Opal. Opal was not crazy. Opal simply understood that pronouns, taken to the concept’s logical conclusion, resulted in the destruction of clarity. Personal pronouns, object pronouns, possessive pronouns, all were part of the same treacherous slippery slope of language confusion, anarchy, and death. Everyone would become lost in a maze of referents. Opal refused to succumb to such tyranny. Opal would fight the tyranny to Opal’s last breath, just like Opal would fight the Spiked who now filled Tyrian’s streets. Continuing to mutter, Opal walked down the street. A small hand tugged at Opal’s sleeve, but was ignored or perhaps not even noticed, the events of the night being too fixed in Opal’s mind for anything else to enter in. Eventually, the tugging sensation stopped, and Opal was left in peace to think freely once more. Opal turned the corner whistling, and stopped short, seeing a darkly dressed figure in front of her raise a large spike. That didn’t seem right. Opal began to object, but the spike was faster, piercing Opal’s chest. As Opal went limp, Opal thought there were voices, talking of strange matters. “The spike didn’t even take,” one muttered. “Another skaa here! Who did she think she was?” Opal winced at the double pronoun usage, but was too weak to correct the linguistic error. Instead, Opal fell asleep, one last time. Magenta Albatross was attacked by a Coinshot, but didn't die! Opal Lion was killed by the Spiked, and was a Vanilla Villager! Day 2 has begun and will end in ~46 hours at 7pm Pacific time on January 8th. All clarifications have been edited into the OP, and I've also compiled a rules doc which hopefully lays everything out a little more clearly. Player List 1. Amber Vulture 2. *takes a deep breath* Okay MOAR EMOTIONAL ALLOMANCY CLARIFICATIONS because apparently these are neverending :)))) (many are in response to Meerkat's post, some are stuff we just thought up ourselves or that other people asked) On Smoking: Smokers can send in one Smoking-related action per numbered cycle (e.g. only once during C3). That action could be "turn off my coppercloud" or "smoke X" or "just smoke myself" (only necessary if you want to change states after 1 turn rather than wait 2). That action will last for two turns (unless it's a Night order and the Smoker puts in a superseding one the next Day). After those two turns are up, if the Smoker does not put in another order, they will return to their default state of Smoking themselves. Also, no zombie copperclouds: if I submit an action to smoke Fifth during N3, and am killed that same turn, Fifth will be smoked N3 but not D4. Rioting/Soothing: You can Riot someone to a no-vote but not from one. If you try to Riot someone from a no-vote, your own vote doesn't get cancelled - you just get told the action was invalid (and, where possible, we'll try to prevent that from happening as your friendly neighborhood GMs, in the same way we'd alert someone who tried to Lurch the same person two cycles in a row). A Rioter trying to move Fifth's vote to Wilson will still have their own vote nullified if Fifth's vote ends on Wilson. A Rioter cannot move their own vote, and a Soother cannot self-target. Other stuff: You cannot place two actions during the same turn (i.e. no elim kill + night action from the same person), but you can place two during the same cycle (i.e. day action + elim kill is fine). Day OoA: Smoking*, Soothing/Rioting**, Execution Night OoA: Smoking*, Seeking, Tineye Message, Lurching, Kills *As noted, Smoking does not extend protection to someone the turn after the Smoker dies. ** The interactions between Soothing and Rioting have already been clarified extensively. -

A set of clarifications on emotional allomancy (will also be included in the N1 writeup and edited into the OP): Seeking a Smoked target will have a result of "your target was Smoked" (for role and alignment both). If a Rioter is Smoked, their own vote will not be cancelled (and the Riot will still go through). If a Rioter and a Soother try to move and cancel the same vote, the vote is moved and cancelled (with an effective result of just cancelled, plus the Rioter's own vote being cancelled). Rioting someone's vote to a Smoked player will work as normal. Smoking can be activated on the Day or Night turn, and will apply that turn and the following turn. It cannot be activated more than once in a numbered cycle (e.g. could not be activated more than once in C3, but could be activated N2 and then D3 - in which case the D3 order would supersede the N2 order). Soothing or Rioting a Smoked player will not move that player's vote. A Rioter's own vote will still be cancelled. Also, a Tineye who is night killed will still have their message appear in the writeup at the start of the day. And the way Mistborn rolls work is that if the first roll turns up a metal that the Mistborn has already had, roll again and take that roll even if they've also already had that metal. Three more hours, get your votes in! -

Hey, y'all! There are 24 hours left until the Day ends. Get your votes in by then! A few other announcements: Please include @Fifth Scholar and myself, but not @little wilson, in your PMs to other players. Smokers have their copperclouds on by default, and must send in an action to turn them off. Try to be more careful of which account you're on when you post in thread; we've already had two Oops Awards given out. (If you do mess up and realize, hide your post and edit out the content.) And if you want to do your own death writeup, feel free! Just send it in your GM PM. -

That’s correct; role madness is when everyone has a role. The clarification is there because the rules initially kind of implied that the vanilla role was villager-only, which it isn’t, and someone asked before the game about it. -

Day 1: Saboteurs Sandhya stood on top of the small wall surrounding the town, facing south. She couldn’t see them yet, but if the scouts were right, they were on their way. Koloss. A small band in comparison to to some of the huge groups he had seen in his day, but more than enough to overrun the town if they weren’t prepared. Her eye twitched and she reached for the bottle that never strayed too far from her hand nowadays. The problem was, every time they began preparations, it seemed something went wrong. When they repaired some of the damaged sections of the wall, they awoke the next day to find the mortar refused to hold. The glue on the fletchings were the same. Then there was the fire that destroyed a lot of their supplies. Sandhya didn’t know what it all meant, but she knew a disaster in the making when she saw it and this one was shaping up to be a doozy…. ~~~ Wilson sat studying the recent delays in the war effort. Something didn’t make sense. They had used the exact same mortar for other repairs around the town and it held fine. The glue stuck on anything except weapons; she had tested it herself. Her fingers still had tiny bits of feather stuck to them because of the adhesive. No, this was too systematic, too controlled. Her eyes grew wide as an idea came to her…. ~~~ Quinn sat in Dyring’s Inn, drowning his sorrows in drink. This was the biggest news this little town had ever heard and yet he didn’t feel like sharing it. “News flash, everyone,” he mumbled into his drink. “We’re all going to die!” Just as he raised his mug to his lips, the door slammed open. In the fading light of day, Wilson stood in the doorway, out of breath and with bits of feather stuck all over her. The mists were already starting to curl around his feet. Wilson took a minute to catch her breath and then said one word to the waiting crowd. “Saboteurs.” Anniversary Game 8 has begun! All PMs have been sent. If you can't get into your anon account, please let us know as soon as possible! A few quick reminders, clarifications, and whatnot: On anonymous accounts: do not post with your anon account in any thread but this one. Do not post with your personal account in this thread. You can follow the thread or the forum with your anon account if you so choose. All PMs from past games should be gone already, but if there are any remaining please just delete them. You can add your personal account to your GM PM, but we do not recommend it, as it leads to substantially more mistakes. You may also notice we have new avatars! Credit for those is in the spoiler below. If you would like to add one yourself, we have several icons still missing, a few that it would be nice to replace, and anything we have multiple depictions of will be cycled between those images regularly. All clarifications have been in the OP and will continue to be edited in there, but a summary of the questions already asked: If you want to add a cosmetic role or character name/description (and please do!), DM it to me (preferably on your anon account) and I’ll add it into the next player list. Hello, all! Some announcements: the game will begin in just under 24 hours, at 7pm PT / 3am GMT / 2pm AEDT. It will be co-GMed by @Fifth Scholar and the IM is @little wilson. You can still sign up right until we go live, by PMing me here or wherever else you like! I look forward to seeing you all in Tyrian Falls. -
Oh no! Koloss have begun advancing on your town, Tyrian Falls! Since The Lord Ruler died, they seem to be acting with a mind of their own. Unfortunately for you, your town is a way point between Fadrex City and Luthadel. That means you have a stockpile of metals, but that’s probably why they targeted you in the first place. On the other hand, you have a large collection of metals! You might be able to hold them off, but it seems like someone (or a conspiracy of someones) seems to be undermining your defenses. Somehow, before the Koloss arrive, you have to rid your town of these dissenters; those that are spiked. Until then, you won’t be able to mount an effective defense for your town. If you fail, everyone dies, so you better not fail! Some people within the town have been hiding a few secrets; some of them are Mistings, so you have help in your battle versus the forces of Ruin. Although some of them may be spiked…. Why can’t anything be easy? THUG: They can survive a single attack. If they are killed during a night or day cycle, they survive and this will be revealed in the write up. If they are attacked again, they die… finally. TINEYE: They are messengers and are capable of writing messages to the town while remaining anonymous. Each night, they can send a message to the Game Master. The GM will then post it within the write up at the start of the next Day. As long as a Tineye is alive, players can send Private Messages back and forth. Once no Tineye is alive, they can no longer deliver messages, so no more PMs. SMOKER: The Smoker is undetectable and they can extend this power to one other person each night. If scanned by a Seeker, the smoker or the person encompassed within their coppercloud will show up as being Smoked. Alternatively, the Smoker can turn their coppercloud off. This would allow them to be scanned accurately as a Smoker. In addition to being undetectable by the Seeker, the Smoker and their target are unaffected by emotional Allomancy. As long as the Smoker is using their coppercloud, a Soother or Rioter cannot change their vote. SEEKER: The Seeker can sense when someone is burning metals. In fact, they have gotten so good that they can tell whether someone is spiked or not! Once per night, the Seeker can target someone to learn their abilities and alignment. COINSHOT: The Coinshot does what they do best. They push metals around; specifically into other people’s bodies. Once per night, the Coinshot can target a person for death. Unless otherwise disrupted, that person dies. LURCHER: Where the Coinshot pushes, the Lurcher pulls. Once per night the Lurcher can target someone and that person will be saved from death. A Lurcher cannot target the same person two nights in a row. SOOTHER: Their ability to dampen emotions puts them and the Rioter in a very special position. During the Day, they can negate one person’s vote. The change will be anonymous, but since I will be posting voting results at the end of each day, those that are observant should be able to tell what votes were changed. RIOTER: The Rioter works in a similar fashion as the Soother, except once during the day round they can change one person’s vote. Using this power does nullify their own vote though. They are still capable of voting, but their vote will not be counted. The change itself will be anonymous, but since I will be posting voting results at the end of each day, those that are observant should be able to tell what votes were changed. MISTBORN: They have the abilities of all of the above, but will only be able to use one per cycle. At the beginning of every night, the Mistborn will be told which ability they have and they can use that ability until the next night. If a previously held power would be received, the die is rerolled, and the new power is granted regardless of whether or not it was previously held. VANILLA: You have no special powers, but you still get a vote every day. Who knows? Perhaps you were meant to be the one to save the town! Not all stories are about the strongest people in a group. VILLAGE: Win when all Spiked are dead. SPIKED: Win when they outnumber the village, or otherwise can no longer lose. Housekeeping & clarifications Cosmetic roles You are highly encouraged (but not required) to choose a cosmetic role, and include it in your posts as much as you can, however you see fit. Some examples are below (and more may be added later from other past games), but feel free to get creative! (You might even get a special prize for it! ) Welcome to Anniversary Game 8, and another year of SE! This is an anonymous game. Please sign up by PMing me privately. You can message me here, on Discord, or wherever else you like, and you'll be in so long as I respond with a "noted" within a day or two. I’m considering taking it, since the timing would work out well with my fall break. I should be able to let you know within the next day or two.

Depends on how unbalanced we're talking. The idea is that BTs are run a little differently than normal games and in large part to test-run a concept more than play a full game with it, but we haven't really hashed out specifics beyond that.

hahahahahahahahhahahaha no Mat already covered it basically, but it's always the case that a couple committee members are certain they won't be playing (and one of the mods will have to be IMing), so you can just PM us as a group and we'll select a couple people to talk with you privately. Break Tank games are a thing that will happen when we can figure out how the heck to format them. They may just be a partial game, may start on C2 or C3, may just be one 12-hour period in total or might be normal length. We'll see! If you have permission this is allowed, fyi.
