The ability to vaporize people sounds terrifying. +1 How could you defend against that!? I wonder if holding Stormlight or even just innate investiture would provide some resistance to this. Just pure speculation.

My mistake! Edited my post.

I've seen this discussed before. I know it's kind of splitting hairs, but the third color in the prologue is violet blood and chasmfiends have purple blood. Would I be surprised if it turns out the violet blood is from some sort of great shell or carapaced beast? No. Would I be surprised if it turns out to be something completely different? No again! Considering the color of their skin, I think Aimians could be a viable candidate for the violet blood as well. Edit: I got it mixed up. Prologue had violet blood, chasmfiends have purple blood.

I believe that Brandon has stated that Stormlight Archive, although it involves several worldhoppers and cosmere aware characters, will not have a major impact on the story arc of the cosmere as a whole. If we assume that Odium is to be defeated somewhere in the series (this is fantasy after all, good is supposed to triumph over evil), then I think we can safely assume that he is not the Big Bad of the cosmere. Or else SA would have a huge impact on the storyline of the cosmere. A way around this is that maybe the resolution of SA isn't Odium's defeat, but his banishment from the Greater Roshar system, but I'm not on board with that idea.

@RShara to the WoB rescue once again, thanks!

I think I've seen WOB somewhere that says if a shard is left alone without a holder or long enough it will develop sentience. I have a sneaking fealing, though no evidence whatsoever, that Adonalsium did not have a holder. And I think all or most of the current Shard holders, Hoid, and his old reptile friend were involved in the shattering. I don't necessarily think they caused it, but they were involved.

Syl. Definitely Syl. Don't know if she's representative of all honorspren though. I'd be most interested in seeing rainspren, though. They just sound so bizarre. And I think walking through a forest filled with floating lifespren like little green fireflies would be pretty magical (for lack of a better word).

Possible Foreshadowings & Red-herrings
duladen replied to don_karma_II's topic in Stormlight Archive
I take your meaning @don_karma_II and I think it's an interesting thought. Looking forward to being lazy and read what else you can find -
I think you could call Vin "Preservation's champion" in a loose sense of the word, heir might be more appropriate as some have pointed out. However, I think when Tanavast tells Dalinar to push Odium to select a champion, it's a much more specific thing. It probably has something to do with the pact made between Tanavast, Rayse, and Cultivation, and is related to the nature of the Heralds and Desolations. I don't thinks it is just a matter of the Shards on/near Roshar (RoShards?) picking someone well placed to further their goals. I think it will be a much more open and obvious selection when the time comes, and it will lead to a duel to the death.

I'm on mobile and don't have the link, but there was a theory here that the First Ideal is not actually necessary for forming a Nahel Bond. There's no big climactic moment when characters say the First Ideal. I agree that it's most likely that it was a construct of forming the Knights Radiant and giving them a common code. In Dalinar's vision, Nohadon says, "Not all spren are as discerning as Honorspren." The First Ideal, created with the KR, would ensure the knights met a certain standard.

[Theory]The Cognitive Realm and it's appearance.
duladen replied to Windborne Sword's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, I am very eager to see the cognitive realm on other Shardworlds and how worldhoppers get from one planet to the next. I think we have WOB that the problem on Sel is related to both shards being shattered so there's nothing containing their power. On Roshar, this is achieved by spren. On Sel, the Seons and Skaze provide some containment but their numbers aren't even close to that of spren.- 27 replies

[Theory]The Cognitive Realm and it's appearance.
duladen replied to Windborne Sword's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think you are on the right track, but I'd like to offer a slight modification: we know that Shadesmar is only Roshar's equivalent of the Cognitive Realm. If you refer to the map, the "expanses" are other Shardworlds' cognitive reflections. With this in mind, I would agree that the Cognitive Realm for each Shardworld reflects some important aspect of that world - Shademar has seas of glass spheres, maybe Scadrial's is made entirely of metal. However, I'd say that everyone would see each region of the Cognitive Realm the same as each other. In other words, the appearance is controlled by the collective consciousness of that Shardworld, and is not just in the eye of the beholder. Edit: slightly ninja'd!- 27 replies

Another possible herald (though the evidence is shaky) is the dark skinned, dark haired bridgeman that Kaladin helps that speaks Alethi without an accent despite looking Azish/Makabaki. His physical appearance and the mention of his lack of accent struck me as very similar to "Taln." Now if "Taln" isn't Taln, that pretty much kills this theory.
-
I really like this idea! Assuming this theory is correct, my guess would be that it could have something to do with the lesser spren's far lower cognitive presence in the Physical realm or maybe a lack of the Nahel Bond with the Knight. Edit: Ninja'd!

I had to do a google search to make sure I understood 'inanimate' correctly, and this still seems debatable, but... I would say Rysn's plant. Mainly because of her internal monologue and the glimpse at how uncomfortable most Rosharans would be on our world.

Great, great question. I had forgotten about that.

First topic of my own! Reading this post today gave me a thought about marrying the regional magic systems of Sel with some Realmatic Theory. After a quick search, I didn't see anything posted that covered all of my thoughts, but apologies if this has been said before. Anyways, here goes: Spiritual - A Selian's innate ability to invest in the powers of Devotion and/or Dominion; their particular heritage has an impact on their sDNA and so impacts which system someone can use. Cognitive - As described here, the cognitive aspect of a nation determines the base shape, but I think this must also be in harmony with the physical world. I imagine that the fall of Elantris happened when the chasm appeared, not when the country as a whole learned about it. I also think that an individual's cognitive understanding of their heritage, like their sDNA, has an impact on the system they use. Physical: The base shape must physically match that of the nation you are currently in. The key point: Spiritual and Cognitive impact your ability and method to access investiture. Cognitive and Physical impact the base form. This would mean that someone from Mai Pon could use Forging in Arelon if they used Aon Aon as their base. Let the debate begin!

What do you think is going to happen in book three
duladen replied to shadewolf's topic in Stormlight Archive
Are we forgetting about the Everstorm circling the globe!? At the end of WoR we are told that it is expected to hit Shin in a few days. Shinovar has never seen a storm anywhere near this powerful. Will it be a huge disaster? Will there be some sort of protection over Shinovar from Cultivation? Then, what will happen to all the parshmen across Roshar when that storm hits? -
My mistake! Really sorry... I thought you were suggesting that the Herald that retrieved their blade was ACTUALLY Taln. Not another Herald that this now disguised as Taln. I guess that could be possible, but I still think that the guy we saw at the end of WoK was actually Taln.

I'm going to agree that Nightblood is on the power level of an Honorblade. In regards to Szeth using an Honorblade against Kaladin with a live Shardblade and it not looking more powerful: I think to see the true power of an Honorblade we will need to see it wielded by a Herald. Just like to see the true power of a Shardblade we needed to see one that was alive and not just revived. My guess: Revived Shardblade << Honorblade used by regular person < Live Shardblade wielded by Radiant << Honorblade wielded by Herald or Nightblood wielded by anyone. Remember: There were plenty of Desolations before the founding of the KR where I'm guessing the Heralds carried most of the fight against the Voidbringers. That's some serious power. Also, I realize that this kind of suggests that if a Herald wielded Nightblood, it would be crazy powerful. I don't know if that sits well, but I'm not sure how to reconcile it.

Taln wasn't the one to back and get his Honorblade because he was already in Damnation with his Blade. He was killed during the Desolation. I suspect that the Herald that retrieved their Blade was Nalan. I don't really like the theory that the madman in WoR isn't Taln unless it's another Herald, possibly Jezrien with some Yolish Lightweaving that makes him look like Taln? I just don't see how else you explain the lightning reflexes. EDIT: Added note about Nalan.

I think this is the most elegant solution to the problem. +1 for catching the issue, +1 for this cool idea!
-
I really like this theory. To throw another idea out there, perhaps each voidspren that creates a form of power has an associated Unmade. In much the same way as Syl views the Stormfather and Wyndle views the Nightwatcher ("Mother"). Just a thought.

I touched on this in another thread: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6865-theory-potential-willshapers/?p=114836 Essentially, if the three methods of access magic on Roshar are Old Magic, Surgebinding, and Voidbringing, then maybe these are divided among the three humanoid beings we have seen. Aimian = Old Magic, Human = Surgebinding, Listener = Voindbringing. Each method would be granted based on your sDNA, and would have 10 parallel abilities.

To add to this, aren't the Midnight Essence filled with smoke? I think these two visions from Dalinar provide decent evidence that Smokeform is associated with anti-Transformation. However, the two KR orders with access to Transformation have Oil and Blood as their essences. Not sure what to make of that.
