Will Dalinar learn how Kaladin became a slave, in WOR?
eveorjoy replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
The difference between Justice and Vengeance is both intent and what is legal. Right now killing Amaram would not be Justice necessarily. Kaladin would not be killing Amaram because he wants to put right what was wrong, in fact that would be impossible. He would kill Amaram because he is really angry. How Kaladin deals with Amaram will shape his destiny as a KR. -
Will Dalinar learn how Kaladin became a slave, in WOR?
eveorjoy replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
Kaladin's story arc in book one focused on him becoming someone who could protect. This book two's arc is about the path of honor vs the path of vengeance. Maybe ideal three is "I will seek honor before vengeance." -
Will Dalinar learn how Kaladin became a slave, in WOR?

I agree. Amaram won't be a Windrunner, because he will not attract Honor spren, but he could attract another kind of spren. Maybe he already has and that is why he knows so much. Actually, what if Amaram noticed somehow what Kaladin was, apologized, and then offered to train him. He could be a mentor for him like Jasnah is for Shallan. Kaladin doesn't have a lot of options and he promised Syl he would become a Radiant. Amaram maybe be the only way. Most likely not, but it would be interesting. -
Should I buy the hard cover or ebook of WoR?
eveorjoy replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
It seems, after considering all of your wonderful comments, the ebook is the best choice, even on my broken Kindle Fire. When I get a bigger place, I will buy TWoKs and WoR for the artwork. Thanks for the advice. Edit: Also for the was a Shard of the Doctor I think Hoid would have it. Hoid just seems so much like a Time Lord to me. -
I agree this is most likely. However, I wonder if we will get Szeth's POV at all? If he not a POV character for the rest of the book, having it suddenly show up would be disorienting. It could work, but I'm not sure we need it. We already know how this fight will affect Szeth from his POV in book 1. I think we will get a bit of Dalinar's POV and maybe another character, but the dominating POV will be Kaladin's. Now if Szeth's POV shows up again at least once before the battle, then yes his POV will most likely be used in the confrontation. I still think Kaladin will dominate however, because he will learn the most from the encounter. I think an interesting POV to see the confrontation from would be Jasnah's or Shallah's POV if they don't already know what Kaladin is. A scholarly POV of the battle could be quite informative. However, I think this is unlikely. The characters who will be the most invested in this fight will be Kaladin and Dalinar so there POVs will be the most important. For Szeth this is just another job. He might be excited that he will finally have an opponent who could beat him, but this would not be a new to us. The reader could think of Szeth's POV from book one and fill in whatever is lost from his POV missing.

I've heard that too, but of the sake of simplicity of describing the scene it was easier to call the sword "Nightblood" in my post. But you are correct. I hope that Hoid says what the sword is named so more confusion will be avoided. @Speaker4thDead-- (love the name) I doubt Kaladin will die unless Brandon makes some serious changes in the series. Authors who know what they are doing do not kill off characters just for shock value. Speaking as an amateur writer who has attempted to write a main character's death into her story and had it blow up in her face, doing it the wrong way kills the overall story. For example (A spoiler for A Game of Thrones coming up) when Ned Stark died in the first book of The Song of Ice and Fire series he was already effectively gone from the story and all the other characters had taken over. Even though Ned had started as a focal character, his arc ended long before he was beheaded and his death served the story overall as catalyst for the other characters. Kaladin's death at this point would harm the overall story. Alive he inspires, Bridge Four. Dead they would fall apart and there would be no story from them anymore. Currently there are no Surgebinders among them other than Kaladin, and Surgebinders seem to be the focus of this series. His death also wouldn't be a catalyst for any of the other main characters. Dalinar likes Kaladin and he would be sad to see him die, but his death would not affect him like Adolin's or Navani's. Adolin would be glad to see him gone. Shallan and Jasnah don't even know he exists. So his death would serve no purpose to the other characters. Also, if Syl is right, he is the only person on Roshar to attract an Honor spren and therefore the only true potential KR Windrunner. I think that order led the rest so Roshar needs at least one. Does that mean Kaladin will always be safe? No. Another Honor spren could show up and bond with another Windrunner. Another one of Bridgemen could become a more of a focal character. Kaladin could develop and meaningful relationship with one of the other main characters making his death mean something to the story. However, just from the excerpts of WoR already out there, I do not believe the story is moving in this direction, at least in this coming book. I'm not saying this because I love Kaladin. I do, but if his death served the story I'd have no problem with it. It's just right now his death would damage the story overall.

Should I buy the hard cover or ebook of WoR?
eveorjoy replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'll be getting the audiobook too. If I do get the ebook for my slowly breaking Kindle fire (that I'm waiting to replace so I can get an uber nice Kindle HDX) I'll get the professional narration, which is just the audible audiobook at a very discounted price. If I get the hard cover, because my slowly breaking Kindle fire makes it hard to read, then I'm going to bite the bullet and get that audible membership I have been considering forever. Then the audiobook would effectively cost the price of new membership, $ 7.49. I love audiobooks, -
Should I buy the hard cover or ebook of WoR?

All good advice. I'm still not sure, but I have much to consider. Currently I'm leaning more toward the ebook. I don't currently have a lot of space at home. It might be nice to have the art eventually, but it seems to me that is not enough compared to the convenience of an ebook. -
Kaladin probably keeps the brands covered up, And not only is that cliffhanger the end of part one, going by this tweet which still seems to match the excerpts, Kaladin's next chapter is chapter 16 in part two. Four interludes, two Shallan's chapters and Adolin's chapter all come before that chapter. I have a feeling Amaram and Dalinar never saw Kaladin and the next Kaladin chapter takes place days later.

The problem with Sigzil's test is he wasn't prepared to take quantitative measurements. He needs to study how stormlight is stored in the gemstones and maybe bring something to measure time next time. He is a pioneer in a field of study that has not existed in 4000 years if it ever existed. He will get the hang of it. I hope this is not the last we see of his research. I'd be happy with pictures of his notes if nothing else.

Good point. Hmm... much to consider. -
I'm hoping it's Sadeas who tries to attack Hoid. That would be a fun scene to see. Sadeas gleefully summoning Oathbringer, planning to finally do Wit in. As the Shardblade comes close to Hoid, he blocks it with Nightblood. The look on Sadeas face would be priceless.

I bought TWoKs as an ebook and I know I missed out on some neat extras. Should I buy the Hardcover of WoR or just stick with the ebook? I'm not going to buy both at first. i don't have the budget for that. It will be one or the other. So which is the better buy?

So what are you going to do until WoR comes out?
eveorjoy replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
I have a blog where I review self-published Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels. I can't recommend what I will be reading because I don't know if those books are good yet. I have read a few good Sci-Fi books that I have reviewed. "Rex Rising" by Chrystalla Thoma is really good. I also enjoyed the "The Overtaking" by Victorine Lieske, it's more of a Romance/ Sci-Fi however. So I need to catch up on that blog. -
Today was so exciting. But that's it. No more free chapters. Fortunately, this wait will be shorter than the next wait we will have when we finish the last page of Words of Radiance. So what are you going to do while you wait? I'm going to: - Read several other books I've been meaning to get to that aren't Sanderson related. - Reread The Way of Kings again. - Visit the 17th shard forums and make crazy predictions and speculations. - Enjoy Stormlight Archive art work. - Checkout more of Feather's Adonalsium Tumblr sight. - Reread the excerpts from WoR. - Fantasize about Kaladin confronting Amaram. - Fantasize about Kaladin vs. Szeth. - Reread other books by Sanderson. So what are you going to do?

Will Dalinar learn how Kaladin became a slave, in WOR?
eveorjoy replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
Maybe he already has. If Amaram is a KR potential that would be so hard for Kaladin. -
I always come to the party so late. Oh well. That would be awesome if Shen found a new form that brings peace. I still think he maybe a spy. The Listeners (I'm calling them that from now on) noticed something was going on with Kaladin even before he won over bridge four. Maybe they made sure Shen was assigned to Bridge Four to spy on them. I know. I expected this emptiness. I guess I'll just have to reread TWoKs again in the meantime. I knew Kaladin seeing Amaram was the cliffhanger of part one. I was literally biting my fist when the soldier told Kaladin a "hero" had come to the Shattered plains. And the first time Kaladin sees Amaram he is embracing Dalinar. Ouch. I figured Eshonai was the explorer. I hope the Listeners find a way to stay free. Adolin feeling the thrill scared me too. At one point the thrill almost drove Dalinar to attack Gavilar. Hopefully, Adolin will not go down a similar path. LOL about Sigzil being a 17th Sharder. Edward is a bit more mature than Adolin (nothing against Adolin) but I agree the dynamic is there. (I love FMA!) In the vision from Dalinar's first WoR chapter, the KR is talking to her spren and not looking at her blade or armor. I don't think the spren become the armor or at least they don't become them completely. We still don't know enough to make an educated guess one way or the other. Just because Adolin loves his shardblade does not mean it has a spren. On a side note. Maybe we should ship Adolin with his blade. Shardolin? That would have been awesome, but I know Kaladin wouldn't do it. He doesn't feel secure enough in his position to even consider it. I wonder if Amaram will recognize him. I agree, the death chant about betraying someone that saved you and controlling storms is likely about a Listener, maybe Eshonai. Or Shen betraying Kaladin? Or maybe not. And now we know what caused the past Desolations. Peter said on Facebook that the Epigraphs of Chapters 8 and 9 were left out. Yeah, they must have spoilers. Good point about Renarin. I was happy he got the blade until you pointed this out. I don't see Kaladin ever having a sword. I think he loves the spear more than Adolin loves his shardblade.

Will Dalinar learn how Kaladin became a slave, in WOR?
eveorjoy replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
When I say tell anyone, I mean Teft, Moash, or Rock. I doubt he would just tell Dalinar without being ordered and even then I think Dalinar would have to encourage him to give the full story. -
Will Dalinar learn how Kaladin became a slave, in WOR?

Yeah, I am afraid Adolin might believe anything about Kaladin because he resents him. I hope not. I liked Adolin in TWoKs and his assessment of Sadeas shows he normally is a good judge of character. Kaladin is my favorite character in TWoKs, possibly my favorite character from Sanderson, so I know if Adolin begins judging him unfairly because of his stupid pride I'm really going to get annoyed with him. I see it coming, but I don't like it. I hope that this isn't the case, or at least that Adolin gets over it before the end of WoR. Or, maybe Adolin will try to find out Kaladin's past to warn Dalinar and instead discover Amarams betrayal. That would be awesome. I doubt it will happen though. Every neat way I imagine Dalinar finding out how Kaladin became a slave seems doubtful to me. I still wonder if Kaladin will tell anyone the full story before the end of WoR.
