  1. At the start, Aticould have agreed with Leras's motives. They originally were in control of their intentions, so they might have collaborated to counter each others powers and then Leras betrayed Ati when he realized that eventually Ruin would become more powerful.
  2. I guess that I assumed that Cultivation was splintered in much the same way as Honor. Since Odium is present on Roshar as well, Cultivation could simply use her shardly powers to oppose those of Odium and nothing supernatural would happen except through ways similar to how Ruin controlled Koloss, by manipulating their intent. Additionally, the shards that we know of so far (Sazed, Preservation, Ruin, Vin, Endowment) didn't habitually inhabit a visible, human form except to those that were influenced directly by their power. Sorry for not explaining this, and it may have a few holes in it, but I don't feel like shards would sit around and play with peoples neurons while ignoring the rest of the cosmere. Also, I like supporting theories even if they aren't completely grounded in books just as an opportunity for discussion.
  3. Cultivation no longer holds her power to my knowlege, so she isn't a shard. The closest terminology we have as far as I know is a sliver. Unless I am mistaken, a sliver is a person who held a signifigant portion of a shard's power but no longer does so. Thus, Vin, Ati, Ruin, the Nightwatcher and Kelsier should all have the same level of sliverhood, with the only distinguishing factor being that Kelsier is largely in the cognitive(?) realm, and thus can influence the world more directly. The OP is arguing that since Kelsier is unique in the cosmere as far as sliverhood and being dead, he is a likely candidate for founding the 17th shard.
  4. These kind of embody the ideal "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves." We have seen that internalizing an ideal creates a Stormlight effect, so these flashes of Stormlight could be nothing more than Dalinar internalizing this ideal and gaining enhanced powers.
  5. Off Center Disorder is a thing!

  6. By this we can assume that 10 intents related to honor are floating around somewhere. If these are attached to honorblades, then it could be possible that each of the heralds was bound to an ideal. Speaking of honorblades, this does provide an explanation of why Szeth is so stubbornly following his charges to kill people; the honorblade is influencing his thoughts.
  7. The Shard of Death: Your powers become stronger the closer you are to dying, but you cannot use them to save yourself. We probably would have a whole lot of main characters in a story with this guy.
  8. @Darnam Since Allomancy and other such powers are attached to the spiritweb, theoretically a revived Kelsier would still be a Mistborn. As for slivers, can we add the Nightwatcher to the list? I feel like she would count as one since she used to hold the power of a shard. This makes: Vin: No sliver powers, HoA distinguishes using the power of the well and letting it go TLR: Vastly increased Allomancy powers Kelsier: Unknown Nightwatcher: Magical mystery powers with neurological effects. Since Vin can be counted as an oddball, we can say that all of the slivers that we encountered that used the power of their respective shard were enhanced in some way beyond normal humans. Good theory.
  9. How many bridge runs did Kaladin go on during WoK? Why do the 4 spikes given to Koloss have a much more drastic change than the 10(?) given to inquisitors? Is it possible for normal people to pass allomatic/feuchemical powers to each other without hemalurgy? Why didn't Sazed remove the block on mistwraiths' intelligence? (or did he?)
  10. Araris Valerian is a minor character in the Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. He is basically the god of swordsplay, can incorporate metal that he is touching into his skin, and his name sounds awesome. Usually on websites I use the name Pwnaga or Pwnaja, which are kind of plays on the Final Fantasy spell system, where the progression would be: Fire, Fira, Firaga, Firaja. Thus: Pwn, Pwara, Pwnaga, Pwnaja, or the highest level of pwnage.
  11. Kate Reading did the Codex Alera which is extremely well done. If anyone has read Dresden Files then this is by the same author. Also, Jim Butcher wrote this series based on a bet that he could not write a good fantasy series based on two "lame" topics. The two are Pokémon and a lost Roman legion. This is probably my second favorite completed fantasy series.
  12. Bayaz should die. That's really all that I can say in this topic. I feel like Glokta could do it at some point in the future.
  13. The mists served several functions in Mistborn, both existing as Preservation's body/power and also serving as a natural balance to Ruin. Also, they snapped people. So the storms might be related to spren creating Nahel bonds, they might counteract Odium passively, and they can probably be taken up by someone who becomes attuned to the power of Honor enough. Also, I find it interesting that the last desolation is referred to as the Everstorm, and I believe someone said that desolations could be predicted mathematically with varying accuracy, similar to highstorms. In line with the mists, perhaps a highstorm occurs every time that a desolation has the potential to occur and thus prevents any desolations from happening by acting as the opposite force to Odium.
  14. To clarify, HoA stated that Preservation was weaker because he had invested in mankind. Since Ruin kept killing people, I would have thought that the investiture would return to Preservation and upset the balance again, due to Preservation not having a counterpart to Hathsin.
  15. I absolutely love reading books in paper form. However, I have listened to Mistborn and WoK and really enjoyed the audiobook forms as well. If anyone wants to hear Kate Reading by herself, the Codex Alera is a great fantasy series that is very well narrated by her. Personally, I prefer audiobooks because they force me to think more about what I am listening to, and they provide a baseline for me to pronounce names. Paper copies are good because I can skim through to the interesting parts and enjoy the plot.
  16. 1. Why was Preservation's power so much weaker than Ruin's total power at the end of HoA even though so many people were killed by Ruin? 2. Since Allomancy came about by Preservation investing a small amount of his power in all humans, what power would people have had the roles of the shards been reversed and Ruin had contributed slightly more investiture?
  17. Presumably a direct conflict between shards is a little like Vin versus Ruin; they are not shattered but their power exists in a latent form like the mists (I kind of assumed that had Sazed not showed up we woul have gotten the powers expressed in some physical way throughout Scadrial). Odium would have needed to stay after the conflict to splinter their shards. Come to think of it, the Scadrians are lucky that Odium didn't show up at the end of HoA. Good theory.
  18. I suspect that several powers would be of limited use. That is why I used surgebinding as an example. However, the most practical use for this with the magic systems that we have seen so far is feruchemy. A spike could store warmth and be used as a refrigerator, or store weight and be used as a part of an elevator. The metal of the spike simply would need to be welded into another correctly alloyed metal that would serve as a metalmind.
  19. I would like to point out that hemalurgic spikes are indeed separate from the people that they end up in. Vin lost her earring on several occasions and with it her ability to sense ruin. I don't think that it is too much of a stretch to assume that through awakening a spike could take control of its own powers.
  20. I read this series and really really wanted Bayaz to die (for those who haven't read this series Bayaz is like Gandalf but he kills good guys and tries to rule the world). No favorite moments in there. Number 1: Furies of Calderon where Tavi brings in Duroga and saves Garrison. Number 2: First Lord's Fury where Octavian ends the Vord War
  21. Well this could be different. I just wanted to know if the metals of individual worlds were distinct. If a person on Nalthis burned lerasium they might be able to access power from Nalthian metals while a Scadrian could not. Basically. I don't really know the limits of commands that can be given to an awakened object but I think it would be interesting to see if this could happen.
  22. 1. Can a hemalurgic spike be awakened, and if so would it be able to use its powers? 2. Are allomantic metals spiritually or cognitively different on Scadrial as opposed to Roshar or Sel? 3. Could Ruin or Harmony influence a spiked person on another shardworld than the one the shard resided on? 4. Is it more difficult to worldhop if you are carrying things with you (like bars of allomantic metals)? 5. Are Lerasium and Atium chemically inert? That is, could they be trapped (through a reaction) in some compound where they could not be burned by a person without being separated?
  23. I can see how that makes sense. I think in HoA someone said that a rock was made of equal parts of Preservation and Ruin, which could be why metals on scadrial are Allomantically active; they came from preservation directly. However, WoB says that hemalurgy is universal, which wouldn't really be relevant unless metals on other worlds were also usable allomantically. Since Hemalurgy and Allomancy all use the same focus for their power, allomancy would also then be able to function with metals from other worlds.
  24. This may not be of very much signifigance, but Chapter 15 of TWoK says, "'Scared to go onward,' Kaladin said, 'but terrified to go back to what you were.' She nodded. 'I know how you feel,' he said." I think that this shows that there needs to be some sort of connection between spen and surgebinders aside from a sense of honor. Kaladin has always been worried about his future, from having to decide about whether or not to become a soldier to how to deal with running a bridgecrew. Syl clearly feels the same way. This would also explain why some honorspren are not as capable of choosing "good" men to bond with. If a spren valued the ability to make honorable decisions without remorse then that could create a surgebinder that was not bound by moral values such as how Dalinar and Kaladin.
  25. In HOA Sazed was talking about how Ruin and Preservation were part of Adonalsium, and he was confused about Ati and Leras because he felt that the powers originally existed independent of a personality. Perhaps Adonalsium never existed as a person and thus if a single person obtained all 16 shards then Adonalsium would not be created. I don't feel like Hoid would trust anyone with quite that much power, especially with shards like ruin and odium involved.
