Well, since the last several games I played with Gears involved me strongly arguing that we shouldn't vote him out D1, and this is the Twilight Zone, guess my vote is on Gears (but actually, he's just as good a D1 kill as anyone right now). I also think that any discussion about whether to actually kill someone should happen far later in the cycle, after we've had a chance to make some folks uncomfortable. @Alvron, I guess you need to start grabbing Maps. Defense is weird. I guess we shouldn't settle on a plan yet, since that will make it harder for the elims to optimize a way to stop us.

I think an inconsistent elim kill is one of the easiest ways to imbalance a game. What you suggest is what I thought of when writing the rules, but I think the elims will be highly motivated to seek out correct locations if they have a couple of roles on their team (or even if they just have Workers, since the vote manip is pretty strong).
-
It is "role madness", sort of (I clarified that). There would probably be a lot of Workers, since I want to incentivize everyone to be involved in the information game. I also wanted to keep the mechanics pretty simple to see how the location idea actually works. I did think about some way to have starting information like the Landlord idea, but I'm not sure that helps with the concept.
-
The Elder would only guess at one location. I should clarify that. The informant learns both who was targeted and their location. I don't want this, since that would make them basically untargetable.
-
Guilty as charged. Take it as a compliment of your nice formatting . Any thoughts on how to modify the Carpenter? Maybe twice per game? The Elder I think should feel a bit stronger since their role has maximum potential when working with another player.

I've written up a draft of the rules for my "PM (un)Safety" game. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Good, good. Elim!me is only really good at pocketing in the thread.

This is actually sort of my comfort zone right now, given that I'm coming off a 4-game elim win streak .

Guess I'll try and fly above the radar this time, since everyone is feeling like changing things up.

I'd volunteer to IM for you, except I'm conflicted because you are one of my favorite GMs. And an original rules LG is going to be pretty hard to resist.

I mentioned in the AG thread that I was interested in a ruleset that incentivizes using PMs to discover roles. My rough sketch of the main concept is that everyone would have a "class" in addition to any role they may have (I was thinking roughly 4 classes). Then, all or most actions only succeed if you also correctly submit the class of the target. The game would either be role madness, or vanilla players would be able to enhance their vote by submitting the class of the player they are voting for. PMs would be open (but maybe only 1-1). Some potential roles would mess with player classes mid-game. The thought is that everyone would be incentivized to use PMs to learn the classes of other players, but the villagers would want to exercise caution to limit who the elims can kill. The balance would probably be such that a total reveal of classes would overall help out the elims over the village. It's still a rough framework, but I'm curious what other people's thoughts are on this.

I agree with you here. I think what I was trying to drive at is there is a little less room for flexibility in the rules given the current PM meta. It's not a bad thing, just something we need to be aware of when creating games and approving rules. I think it would be fun to try and design a game that is based on roleclaims to take advantage of how a lot of the community right now enjoys playing.

Don’t do it! Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny! So my two greatest mistakes were poisoning Axolotl (who I tunneled on for several cycles without telling anyone), and then poisoning Gorilla. I hit Gorilla for 3 reasons; I thought they were Claincy and it would be funny, I was miffed that they asked me to roleclaim, and I thought it might give me some leverage if people tried to vote me out. I felt bad about this pretty quickly after it happened, and probably wouldn’t do it again, especially when the whole blackmail thing came out of the bag. Speaking of which, I voted on Dingo, and after hearing from Ventyl in the doc, wish he’d been able to post in thread before we removed him. But I’ll stand by my vote, because I think the issue was time-sensitive. I also felt bad about voting out a confirmed villager, but was able to satisfy myself by trading my vote for an item from Gorilla in the future. I also was on the losing end of another mechanically solvable shard game (one of the first ones), and I figured the elims would appreciate a bit of a break. It’s unfortunate that the whole thing came about right after we had asked for UP to give us a second vote.

I had a similar experience, although I’m not sure it was Claincy that made the call in my case. I was also considering claiming, but really didn’t want either of the players I’d poisoned to die.

Well, that's another thing. I'm seeing a lot of this from the outside, since my reputation is not conducive to roleclaims happening in PMs that I'm in. That's partly why I want to hear from the wider community on the topic, and I don't necessarily think this thread is the best place for that discussion. I will say that my recent experiences that stand out are this game (the spec doc has some comments on this, if you can find them), the last LG I played (where elim!Mist got a juicy roleclaim immediately after pinch-hitting), and that LG again (where we killed Illwei for knowing basically the entire role distribution after a few cycles).

I don't know if pet peeve is the right way to say it. It would have been when I formed the opinion, but nowadays you open a PM and you basically get a roleclaim. The meta seems to have moved beyond my comfort zone in this way, but it's at least something I can pretend to grouch at people for. I do think that being too open with roles PMs can put pressure on the rules/role distribution of a game (which seems to have happened in this game, to some extent). This is possibly a tragedy of the commons situation, where it is fun individually to roleclaim, but if everyone does it, some games start to break. The topic of PMs in general probably deserves a well-thought post in the Meta thread, where I'd be very interested to hear some of the newer players' opinions on them in general. Or perhaps a Google poll like Kas did about what players are looking for in a game.

I don't actually have a compulsion to correct grammar . I was referring to one of the more recent games I played where I think Orlok was trying out Wilson's style of playing chill. I never commented on the style, but I fixed everything when I quoted a post.

That's true. But neither Wilson nor Orlok was playing this game with their unique style, so I didn't feel like I needed to all that much.

Yeah. You'll notice nobody was screaming, "PM safety!" into the thread and whacking people upside the head, and that's because I was incognito .

Yeah, I think I have certain behaviors and speech patterns that I have to consciously try to avoid, or it becomes pretty clear who I am. Beyond that, if I'm trying to hide, I have to use a non-pink color in docs, and never say the word curmudgeonly . If I really wanted to try to hide, I imagine I'd do it by impersonating someone else, rather than by trying to be less... me.

I'd like to sign up for my first LG. It may take a while, but I'd like to try my shot at it sometime.

@Fifth Scholar I've greatly enjoyed having you as a part of the community, and am glad you are sticking around in the age to come. I've already had a run in with some IIM responsibilities, and appreciate the work you've done over the past couple of years all the more as a result. I look forward to potentially murdering you the next time we play together! @little wilson and @Elbereth, many thanks for GMing this game (which doesn't quite do justice to all the work you two did)! I'm not sure I can offer a better compliment than that I am already looking forward to the next game you will run, even if the rules are crazier than the ones in this game. To everyone that played (and to those that didn't), I'm grateful that you are part of our amazing community, and look forward to betraying and being betrayed by you in the future. I'll save some other comments until identities become public.
