Budget concerns seem to be one of the big hurdles. I wouldn't be too miffed if they chose to have effects be observed as they would be in world. For example, Pattern would be mostly visible, Wyndle would only show as a slight, dark dust trail that Lift kept talking at, and Syl would be completely invisible until she decided to show herself. It would be really satisfying to jump in surprise and melt in awe at the same time as Teft when he/we are finally introduced to Syl. That way, you could even cut the effects of Stormlight back to what your average non-surgebinder would see, and reserve your budget for truly unique first person experiences like Shallan's trip to Shadesmar, etc.

Nightblood is going to be the End
Darkness replied to Hemalurgic Headshot's topic in Cosmere Discussion
nightblood ascends and consumes all shards, uniting them to become the next adonalsium, ruling the cosmere with the intent to destroy evil. "would you like to destroy the god beyond today?" #kiddingnotkidding- 15 replies

Chronologically, did Hoid try to become an Elantrian before or after obtaining the bead of Lerasium? As a somewhat separate question: Is the reason Hoid couldn't become an Elantrian because he was trying to connect with the land spiritually instead of cognitively?

I always assumed it was dominion and devotion.

Ie not convinced that was the only reason, but I see why you would think that.
-
back to the original topic though, I would tend to agree that being so heavily invested would disrupt not only the surges, but probably also shardblades. It's completely possible that the heralds would be even more invested than Hoid if they chose to draw on their power, and Hoid has said he would be surprised if Jasnah could hurt him with her shardblade.
-
Shallan had her shardblade waaaaaay back in childhood. Not sure how many "ideals" she had spoken back then. But wasn't there a WoB that said lightweavers basically have the first ideal only, and then they power-up by speaking truths? ... Upon searching, I can't find that specifically. Closest I found was "Shallan's oaths are very individualized truths". Also, the last quote has to do with 3rd oath powers. WoBs that I could find around the Shallan/childhood/ideal situation:

Hoid has more unkeyed metalminds!!! (new WoB)
Darkness replied to Steeldancer's topic in Cosmere Discussion
All that said though, Hoid probably knows about creating a blank identity slate, along with manipulating connection and other spiritual attributes, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he knew about identity feruchemy even before the terris people did, through simple trial and error mixed with his general cosmere knowledge. -
You know, it's one of those funny things... I was being completely facetious when I wrote that Cusicesh might have been trapped, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. It would be just like Brandon to foreshadow something like that and hang it in front of us at the same time. I guess you could say that the spren of my idea got stuck in my head once i recorded it, but only because it's true lol
-
Perhaps Cusicesh is one of the unmade, and some hero long ago measured and recorded Cusicesh coming out of the water and performing its routine at 7:46 am a long time ago, and now it's stuck in this cycle; forever condemned to just the briefest glimpse of what it used to be. Locking an unmade into a relatively harmless moment. What a champ. I'd hate to see what happens when the recording is destroyed...

I really like the bit about ambition in the WoKhriss, but I'm skeptical about the odium on roshar mixing. I know there are "spren of him", but I feel like WoB could easily have been discussing mixed honor/cultivation spren, and had nothing to do with odium. The only concrete thing he says about spren is that "the mixing of shards has changed things". somebody please figure out how to ask Brandon something that wont be rafo'd on this haha

So, there has been a moderate amount of speculation, verging on certainty, that spren can be corrupted... and quite a few people are saying that maybe Sja-Anat has that ability. I looked this up on theoryland briefly, but I was hoping maybe somebody knows a WoB that can either confirm or refute that investiture can be 'corrupted' in the sense of 'metamorphosized' or 'changed in nature'. I have this WoB:

Ouch spool. I mean, ya we've seen it before, but garlick is new so he may not have. He also didn't know how to use spoilers and said so in his post, then went back and fixed it even. He's been pleasant, so let's be nice.

maybe it's more in the spirit of "no spren would bond with a parshendi after what happened..." my thought is that the parshendi were not only less suitable for the nahel bond than humans (being less able to give spren access to the physical), but also that the spren 'betrayal' of the parshendi was because the spren were corrupted by odium and turned the parshendi into odium-susceptible power forms. In result, the radiant spren vowed never to bond with parshendi again. if no spren would take them, then the parshendi can't bond.

Heck if it's partially in the Cognitive they could be harm-more grinders (aka painspren) from some animal/beasty out in the storm.

I think it's important to keep in mind that Taravangian went to the Nightwatcher after Gavilar's death. I dont recall hearing that Taravangian had his own plans at all before then. I always thought that he was working toward the same purposes as Gavilar - and by extension Amaram. Heck he may even have been in the Sons of Honor. Consider the following: King T is happily draining people of blood to help Gavilar and the Sons get an idea of what they had to do. Gavilar is the main figure the Sons are gathering behind, but then he gets himself dead. King T then visits the Nightwatcher (I would presume because he didn't have confidence that the Sons of Honor could fully carry out the good work without Gavilar). So he went and asked for the capacity to save the world or whatever, and sometime after (I don't know... Days? Months? Years?) he had that one day of beatific scribbling. I suspect his divergence from Amaram and the Sons of Honor really started to pick up from there. (but it might have already begun before that during the Gavilar days or in the fallout after Gavilar's death). I mean, that's all just speculation, and please let me know if my timelines are messed up, but it makes sense to me if Amaram and Taravangian were working together until Taravangian began doubting, and then received a different plan.

re: Hemalurgy, The nahel bond changes your spirit web by filling the cracks with investiture. I think we both agree, but I expressed it poorly. re:Dalinar, the point is that he was able to receive the visions (which I interpret as looking into the spiritual realm) without personally consuming investiture. Doesn't have to be the future, it's still penetrating realmatic borders. Dalinar probably wasn't the one initiating the penetration, but he was able to receive it. I'm just saying it's possible something similar is happening with Renarin. re: First of the Sun... I did use spoiler tags. But if they didn't show up I blame the fact that I'm on my crem-poor phone, which is why I'm not even trying to multiquote or @people. re: You personally, thank you for being kind and polite while disagreeing with me it's what I like most about this community and you are consistently pleasant to talk with.

true. I cringed even as I wrote 'fits'. I wasn't really referring to his epilepsy, I was trying to refer to his spastic drive to write prophecies. Like when he writes 0000000000000000000000 he seems to be in the throws of some kind of trance. I understand what you're saying Yata, but I dont necessarily agree with it. Also, many magics have interactions with the spiritual realm. You could argue that hemalurgy Another example of reaching the spiritual realm without using investiture is our favorite mathematician ardents, who freeze the essence of a flame spren simply by recording a measurement. My examples are obviously very different from looking from looking into the future, but I think it's definitely possible to reach into the spiritual realm to see enough to have a vision without using investiture... Dalinar does it... Kind of.

Just a minor thing to add: kaladin grapples with the exact same problem of lighteyed superiority for a good part of the books. I found his thoughts and resolutions helped me come to terms with it too. Not support the system by any means, but at least accept that it is the current reality for the Alethi. You should enjoy the inner philosophical musings Kaladin has :-)

That also seems a little too close to the Skybreaker Resonance for me... I'm leaning toward Truthwatchers having glimpses of one of the possible futures (like one shattered glass shard of a broken window). Doesn't seem too powerful to me if it's just one possibility among many. Also, I'd suggest that the reason Renarin really latched onto the Everstorm countdown was twofold. First it was a major event affecting everyone on Roshar, so it overpowered other event forecasts (tho is possibly the reason it also overpowered his mind and sent him into fits), and second it was statistically extremely likely to occur compared to other outcomes. I.e., it showed up in the most futures. It just makes sense to me that Renarin's visions have to do with his Resonance. And of course I'm assuming that he's correct in calling himself Truthwatcher.

I used to assume that the Dawnshards were the original spren that bonded to the Parshendi back before the spren 'betrayed' them; that would make the dawnsingers = parshendi, and dawnchant = rhythms. It seems to make a kind of literal sense of the terms. But as @mattstocum pointed out the visions are in dawnchant, but Dalinar is able to accurately dictate and Navani can write it out, so it's unlikely to be using the same rhythmic patterns. But I still like the idea that the spren 'betrayal' was actually a corruption, and this is all about the pre-shardic Parshendi... I don't know, I'm in two camps on this one. I also like thinking that the dawnshards are the 'first shards' = honorblades (or even the Honorblade + Herald combination; like how vessel + shard are referred to collectively as 'shard'), the dawnsingers are the heralds, and the dawnchant is the native language of the heralds or maybe Honor. The only thing that keeps me happy about not knowing is that this is likely to be important enough to the plot to be laid directly out for us when the time is right. None of this "Rand/Moridin ending" crem. I would be inclined to doubt that the Unmade were the dawnshards, but I definitely concede that it's possible.

is the street urchin more than she seems?
Darkness replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm on my phone right now, but there was someone who asked Brandon that and he seemed to indicate it was important. -
I recently reread Words of Radiance, and a section right near the end stuck out to me. Dalinar has his dream about when he was younger, and it dissolves into warm light that was familiar and felt so real

That's kind of a fun half-baked theory I like the mental picture of Fuzz kind of sloshing around in a spirit web haha. But seriously, I do like the critical threshold bit for sure. Not having metal-specific allomantic lineages certainly doesn't help my theory at first glance, but as Argel said... I've probably typed too much already, so I'll keep my musings to myself haha
