  1. One thing to keep in mind when comparing this disaster to historical extinctions for severity, is the 95% for our worst earthly extinction was 95% of all animal life, not just humans, whereas here, we are talking about the near extinction of the human race (or at least the human race in the portion of Scadrial that we have seen). If we were looking at the extinction rate of the entire planet, rather than just one species (humans), then the number might be more comparable. Still VERY dire.
  2. "Glamour." Definitely an epic then. That, or the son of parents with a strange sense of humour. His demonstration with more green light proved the fact. An illusionist perhaps? Or can he just manipulate light? It was impossible to say without a further demonstration, but Taylor resisted the urge to ask for more. She could assess how useful her new friend would be at a later time. For now, she still had to earn his trust. "I'm with the City Guard. We're sort of the last surviving bastion of civilization in this crazy world now. You happened to wander into the only city that still has running water, electricity, coffee makers, iPods, and all that other cool stuff America used to have. I could get you hooked up, if you want. Get you quarters and a food card." After making his offer, Glamour paused briefly, seeming to stumble over his words. "Are you... So... are you an Epic, or just epic in general?" Taylor smiled at his bashfulness. How had she survived so long without her fans? Brandon tried his best, but he was only one person, and being her boyfriend kind of messed up the whole fan/pop-icon dynamic. "I guess I should come clean, since you've been so nice to me and all." She would have to be careful. Revealing too much could lead to dangerous questions, but revealing to little might seem like she was hiding something. "The truth is, I guess I am an epic, though I don't really use my powers much. They aren't really all that useful anyways, and they totally mess with my emotions, which kills my song-writing ability. I've had to use them a couple times, out on the road, to get by, you know, or other times when I haven't been able to control them, but other than that I've been avoiding them." Taylor wrapped her arms around herself, pretending to just then begin feeling the chilly night air. "I've heard about the Dalles, it's the only place I know of where epics and humans are living together." Taylor paused again, as if unsure of what to say next. Hopefully Glamour would buy her ruse. "I actually came here with someone, a friend, and he's... he doesn't have any powers or anything. We figured the Dalles might be a safe place for us. We got separated though. Do you know where I might find him?"
  3. That sounds good to me! I'll wait for your post and then handle the details from there. *gets excited at the prospect of getting to Hypno's scene in time for Mailiw's return. On the HP point, I was once criticized by a very conservative great aunt for reading fantasy. She basically said all fantasy was rubbish except for the Narnia books "because the lion was Christ." I chuckled politely and changed the topic, haha. Really, I'd say Harry Potter, and many other fantasy novels I've read, have more christian/religious allegories and messages than many of the non-fiction books I've read. I mean, you look at HP, which has overall themes of friendship, trust, self-sacrifice, and the conquering of evil by the power of love, I'd say that seems pretty darn in line with Christian theology to me, witchcraft and all.
  4. How do you know what the admin hat looks like? *Checks over shoulder for spies. EDIT: In all seriousness, if the Admin hat really looked like that, I think I would enjoy wearing it more.
  5. Hey all. *Comatose puts admin hat on* I've noticed lately there has been a slight increase in double posting (at it seems that way to me). Since double posting is explicitly against site rules, and we do have a handy "Edit" button, I'd suggest using it a little more. I know this is not always convenient, but since these threads fill up so quickly, and people post so frequently anyways, there's not really a reason why an earlier post can't be edited, or a later post can't wait until someone else has posted first. Just wanted to head things off before they became too much of a problem. *Comatose takes admin hat off* Sooo, apparently I have some catching up to do pretty much everywhere. Glad to see the RP is moving. Silver never got back to me, so I might give the rest of the night, and then get things moving in Corvallis tomorrow.
  6. Ssssshhhhh. Ms. Glass must never know the extent of my affections for her. Well, I guess I'll have to modify Euphoria slightly. I'm just going to say that she keeps her second power in reserve as a kind of secret weapon, and doesn't gift it often. EDIT: While I was on my Epics of Oregon post, I updated Insight's powers, splitting his complicated 'cognitive space' power into four more manageable ones. I tried to stick to what I had already shown in the RP, but this should make things more manageable. I've added that he can fly or levitate, as per my discovery in Steelheart. Let me know if you see any problems or inconsistencies. I also am having trouble finding the right word for the stage beyond incorporeality. I'm using immaterial right now, but if you think of something better for what I describe, let me know. Insight
  7. I'll mostly have Chase working off stage while you are gone then, going about business as usual.
  8. He could probably cloak air crafts, or flying epics, which would make him useful as a support figure. He could also fake a meteor shower, and make people waste a bunch of wishes on false stars. I'll keep brainstorming. EDIT: It's an effect of being made intangible by Insight. When Insight makes someone intangible, they lose their ability to see the real world becomes impaired. Sounds become muffled, and you lose the ability to see color. Note that I'm using intangibility to describe the state of being unable to be seen, heard, touched, or sensed in any way. It is more extensive than being incorporeal, in which case you can be seen and heard, but not touched. EDIT 2: Here are Insight's powers as I originally wrote them, for reference. I'm still playing around with the mechanics, but the optics of how things have been shown thus far should be the same.
  9. Leila fumbled with her keys, praying that her father would not be waiting on the other side, sitting at their kitchen table. "Listen Danny..." "I know, I know. Just go downstairs, don't look at anyone, don't touch anything. All your usual mumbo-jumbo." Danny, oblivious to the fact that he had interrupted her, just gave one of those infuriatingly cheerful smiles of his. "I'm serious Danny. No games like last time. This thing between me and my dad; it's our business, and I don't want you getting caught up in it." Danny rolled his eyes. "Since when are you not serious?" Leila fixed him with a flat glare. "All right, all right, I get it. No smart talk. I'll head downstairs like a good pup, and wait for further instructions from my mistress." Leila scowled as Danny burst out laughing, wishing that her friend had at least one serious bone in his body. Deciding that she couldn't reasonably delay opening the door any longer, Leila stuck her keys in and the door swung open. Her father was waiting on the other side, sipping a coffee as he worked on a cross word puzzle at the kitchen table. "You're home late," he said, checking the gold watch that Leila's mother had given him for their first and only anniversary. Leila waited until Danny was safely in the basement before responding. "Daniel and I hung out in the library for a bit after school." "Fooling around on the computers I suppose?" Leila caught a slight grimace on her father's face as he glanced at the ripped boys' jeans, and baggy t-shirt she was wearing. "Actually, I was helping Daniel with his math homework." Leila's glasses slipped down her nose a ways, and she pushed them back into place. "We have a big test coming up, and he needs to be prepared." Leila's father studied her for a moment, letting the room go uncomfortably silent. Finally, he spoke. "So have you and Daniel made things official yet?" The way he said Danny's name made his distaste clear. "You seem to have been seeing each other for some time. I would love to officially meet him, instead of just greeting his back as he runs down the stairs." "For the last time, Dad, Daniel is just a friend, like he has been since elementary school. Just because he's male and I'm female doesn't mean our unstoppable teenage hormones are pushing us together against our wills." Leila adjusted her back-pack, and started towards the stairs. "I'll let you meet him when you show me that can happen without you making things inappropriate and uncomfortable." "Let me meet him?" Leila froze as she realized her mistake. "This is my house, young lady. Here, you don't let me do anything." Her father was in the process of standing when a timer on the microwave went off. Frowning, he looked down at his watch and sighed. "Looks like my lunch is over, I'll see you after work. I will expect you to be at home." Leila's father picked up his blazer from where it was folded neatly over a chair, and headed out the door. Leila waited to breathe until he was gone. Danny was waiting for her downstairs, pretending to check his email on her computer, even though she knew he had been listening to every word of their conversation. Danny and his mother were best friends, he didn't understand that sometimes parents and children had complicated relationships. To him, every fight or scrap between Leila and her father was some big tragedy that she needed to be comforted for, not realizing that was just the way things were. "Kind of weird how your dad takes his lunch breaks at, like, 3:15, just so he knows when you get home, isn't it?" Leila sat down on the couch nearby, shooting Danny a warning stare before she began taking out her books. "Ugh," Danny groaned. "Are we really going to study?" "We are if you want to pass English." Leila had told her father they were studying Math because she knew it would frustrate his sensibilities. To him, a young lady like Leila had no business being as good at Math as she was. Science and Mathematics were male disciplines meant for Financial Consultants like him. Leila was just lucky he still didn't force her into those awful pink dresses he used to make her wear, and that he had decided that sending her to those beauty pageants would be too embarrassing. "Fine." Danny flopped down to the floor, spreading his arms and legs like he was making a snow angel. "So, Romeo is from House Capumen..." "Montague. Capulet is Juliet's house. Now get up, you know you don't learn anything if I'm just talking to you. Let's go over the flashcards again." Euphoria blinked as the vision faded, and the world returned to black and white. Looking to her side, she could see that Rainmaker seemed to have the situation with the rogue epic well in hand. With IcyHot and Resistor, Buttercup should have the energy epic restrained soon enough. "Are you behind this one as well?" Euphoria asked, nodding towards the energy epic while ignoring the vision they had just shared. She had given up trying to get anyone's attention. Whatever Insight had done to her, she was completely incapable of being perceived by anyone besides him. Insight, as he now called himself, shook his head. "No. It's amazing, isn't it? Just look how quickly things begin to fall apart without you. Soon nothing will remain of this wretched place but dust and memory." Insight fell silent for a moment, no doubt contemplating what he had just seen in Euphoria's past. Calamity was cruel indeed to give such a power to a man like Insight. Euphoria had to stop him before he could uncover too much, and ruin everything. "I wouldn't be so certain," Euphoria began, trying to distract Insight from his thoughts. "Rainmaker is powerful. Many epics like her rule through fear alone. Look at the Diamond Queen in Astoria. Lucentia has created an incredible alliance of powerful epics through will and force alone. What's to stop Rainmaker from doing the same? She still has Cornucopia to supply the city, and the other Queens to help control it. All you've done is to provide her with a set-back." Insight smirked. "Rainmaker is no Lucentia, and Corvallis is not Astoria. Your fellow rulers have grown lazy, relying on your power to keep the population complacent. True, we might need to help things along here and there, but you, my terrible Enslaver, are the the lynch pin that held this beautiful little nightmare together. Without you, things will fall apart eventually. The only question left is how and when." Euphoria prepared to respond, but stopped when Insight held up a hand. "No more talk. We have more work to do."
  10. I actually play one of these in the Mistborn: The Inquisition RP. She's a 100+ retired obligator, who is basically using pewter to help her get up every morning, protect from the injuries that come with being really old, and to stay alive. She's very fun. I think we also have someone playing a Soother who is too socially anxious to soothe normally, but when cross dressing he adopts a totally different personality, and his female persona is an excellent soother. We also have a Smoker who always wants to be the center of attention, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but kind of runs contrary to the job description. Oh, and I also play a Mistborn who only studies the use of his metals academically (he's an obligator too), and has little to no combat ability. There's also a tineye who is pretty much the most honest person in the RP and she would definitely make a terrible spy. I haven't thought of some of our characters this way before, so it's kind of fun. I'll keep trying to think of more.
  11. Yeah, Corvallis can't finish up the current day until Mailliw gets back (and we are waiting until this weekend to see about moving forward without a Converter post) so go ahead. We should be able to catch up when the next day starts, and as long as we are roughly the same I think we will be fine. I've been sending so many emails for work I almost signed this post with my name and job title...
  12. This distinction makes sense to me. WHOOC is for things that are not canon, but happen to canon characters. The Fanfiction thread is necessarily out of canon, since it includes and Fan Fiction not dealing with WHIO characters. Poor Larry! His ball is most definitely gone. I see Rainmaker as the sort who keeps a whole shelf of bright red balls and other toys in her office, just so children can't play with them. Also, I really want to make those three epic flatterers of Rainmaker who shower her with compliments in an epic to gain her favour. As a (sort of) aside does anyone have a running tally of who is all actually on the ATTD list? I know there are some obvious members who are mentioned more frequently, but it might be fun to have an actual list to keep track of things and for our amusement.
  13. Technically we know very little about how Luthadel was named or founded. With the Lord Ruler's power and control of history, it would have been simple to rename his capital. We also know the early years were characterized by war, so it could be that it took some time before a formal capital city was founded. Your point is a good one though, and certainly suggests that either Lutha is not the name of the Lord Ruler's child, or if she was, then she existed pre-ascension. Or, of course, their's a third possibility and neither of these things are true.
  14. I thank Venture Mistborn for drawing my attention to the fanfiction thread, so that I could enjoy all the pony comics that I missed. There were some healthy lols...
  15. I've gathered that was its inception, but I'd argue that hooks can be found retrospectively, even if they were not originally intended. Overall, it seems Portland best exemplifies the "turf wars" that Megan claims tore Oregon apart.
  16. I agree with what has been said above. I feel like there are some really cool ideas here, and can see why you want to write about them, but given the amount of thought and world-building you seem to have put into things, it seems difficult for other players to become involved. You've got some interesting power-sets here, but the RP is a lot more than just epics fighting each other (even in Salem). Right now it seems like the only way for other epics to get involved is to challenge your council, which given their wealth of in-vulnerabilities, seems like a moot proposition. If you wanted to make a more workable RP setting (provided the other members agree), I'd suggest cutting down your cast to one or two characters, and then leave the other slots open for other players to fill. This worked well for me in Corvallis, so I would highly recommend it. Then, as Kobold suggests, look for a hook. In Salem, the hook is the fighting pits, simple enough. In Corvallis, it's the instability caused by Euphoria's disappearance that starts a lot of the action, and the devotion of a supposed paradise into chaos. In Astoria (which may be the most similar to what you have in mind) we have a wealth of powerful epics, whose leader has left. The Metal and Mary's efforts to keep the city under control and defend it from invaders is made more interesting because of Lucentia's absence. I confess to not really knowing what the hook is in Portland, since I have only read the start and ending of the thread, but from what I have read, it seems like the focus is on Funtimes arrival and the chaos she brings with her, and on the conflict between the MEE, the Empire of Light, The Dominion, and Thoughttown. If you don't want to make any changes, or to find a distinctive hook like the ones in the other threads, I'd suggest just going for it and making a solid piece of fan-fiction. That way you can enjoy your story as you want to make it, and don't have to worry about other people mucking it up.
  17. I just got a real life grown-up law job! I won't be starting until next may (after I finish my last year of school), but having a job lined up is going to make that last year soooo much more enjoyable.
  18. I'm guessing the effect on appearance is not as pronounced as it is for Returned. Slight changes are made perhaps, but people's overall age and body type remain the same. For my epics, Euphoria's appearance hasn't really changed, which I think works with her character. If this theory is applied to Rainmaker, I imagine her hair is more silky and shiny, and she looks slightly younger than she would had she not become an epic. She likes to look camera pretty, since she was used to doing so when her husband was a politician.
  19. That's just it, there still some more things to finish up in Corvallis before morning, so it would be nice to get going with them so that the transition to morning can be synced. We can't finish until Mailliw gets back anyways, but it would be nice to be ready to move into that last scene with Rainmaker and Hypno as soon as possible. I'll maybe give it a couple of days, just in case Silver has other ideas of how the restraining happens, or has second thoughts. EDIT: Gotchya! As someone who has worked with a camp schedule before I totally get it. I'll wait till next weekend and send a PM.
  20. So Silver Dragon (please jump in if you see this) hasn't been online in almost a week. In the interest of moving Corvallis forward, any thoughts on how we should proceed? Last we spoke, it sounded to me like Silver was fine with the plan to have Converter imprisoned (again, correct me if you see this Silver), so perhaps we should assume that the attempt is successful and move on from there? I would like to get things with this fight wrapped up so that the characters can move on. It would also be nice to be ready to write Hypno's scene before Mailliw gets back from his hiatus. What do you guys think? And how much longer should I wait before moving forward? I know a week isn't that long of a time, and Silver has claimed to be busy (because of school I'm guessing), so I'm fine with waiting too, as long as everyone else is. It would just be nice to get an indication of what kind of time frame we are working with.
  21. Brandon walked out of the bathroom, intending to slink back to his seat and hopefully remain unnoticed until Reader hopefully forgot about him. He was totally unprepared to find Reader chained to two ball and chains restrained in a dog crate. A strange epic, likely the source of the restraints, was in command of the room, lecturing Reader for overstepping his place. Interesting. It would seem that the Dalles was not entirely unified. It made sense, of course. After all, how could a city run by humans that included powerful epics in its population be unified? The new epic's attention shifted to the younger female epic who had been helping the Doctor with his supplies earlier. What was her name again? Apparently she was responsible for turning the new epic's socks pink. As 'Lockser' (what kind of epic name was that?) taunted Arsenal, Brandon tried his best to slip back into his seat without being seen. With Reader restrained, and all the other squabbles between the epics in the room, perhaps he would be able to slip away unnoticed after all. He tried his best not to make eye contact with any of the guards across the room, who Reader had instructed to kill Brandon if he attempted to leave.
  22. I enjoy seeing this effect in the Mistborn RP as well. I think its heightened, since we all have his influence in common, and react of each other, but it is an interesting element to look at.
  23. She'd probably morph into this, and then make some comment about letting him finish, but insisting that she is the best Shapeshifter of all time. With Insight, I was thinking there was some sort of cognitive thing going on, where he could pass through the earth if he wanted, but as long as he thinks of things as solid, he can still sit on chairs, or walk on the ground, even if he can't move or affect them in any way. I might end with doing some combination of this with zero gravity. I might also separate his 'coginitive space' power, which is rather complex, into two or three more easily defined powers. I'll keep you posted, haha.
