Long Game 1: In the Wake of the Koloss
Claincy replied to Metacognition's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Clancy opened the tavern door and hobbled into the room beyond, taking a seat and a tankard before speaking into the relative quiet that had followed Grayv's words. His words were carefully measured and rose and fell as he talked, drawing his audience in with the skill of an expert storyteller." "I have heard of a similar tale before. In a small village, not unlike this one, far to the north in the shadow of the ashmount Torinost." The taverns patrons turned to listen to the wisened storyteller as he began his story. "It was a peaceful farming village, much like our own, with men enough to fend off bandits and discourage recruiters. When word came to them of an approaching Koloss hoard they did not give in to their fear, but reviewed their defenses, hoping that they might survive the assault." "As they prepared they discovered problems that hadn't been there before. Strange things, gaps in the wall, ruined and missing weapons, food supplies spoiled." Clancy's voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, "It soon became clear that there was a traitor within the village. Someone was sabotaging their defense!" the tempo of his voice changed as he described the hunt that followed, "The once united town began to fracture. Neighbours accused eachother, friends fought and all kept weapons close to hand. By the time the koloss arrived many were dead already, a few were slain by the traitors, but most were killed in anger and fear by other ordinary skaa who let their terror for their lives overcome their reason. When the koloss came the towns defenses barely offered any resistance and the koloss swept through the town, slaughtering everyone." "We cannot allow the same to happen here. We must not let chaos rule us. We must work together to seek out these saboteurs and end this threat before the koloss end us all!" Edit: Now we have an in-story reason for voting (And the whole "Chaos rule us" thing was totally accidental )- 462 replies

Both direct branches of my family moved here from England around 6-8 generations ago (from memory). Sometime long ago now in both family trees someone was granted a coat of arms. About 6 generations back on my father's side my several-times great grandfather could have inherited some large estate in England as one of the apparently few remaining members of the family. But to do so he would have had to move back to England when he had moved to Australia specifically to get away from the politicking there. (My memory is a bit rusty on all this because it has been some time since I read about it so I may be getting things a little wrong.) Basically I just use it as my dp because it is dang cool and I really like the motto. The other side of family's motto is "A just hand is a precious ointment." not bad either, but I prefer the other.

That is certainly possible and the easiest explanation. It's just boring Although even in that case there pretty much has to be some form of inspiration for the letters so they would probably mean something however unimportant.

We don't know where they came from. It's a big mystery though Brandon has confirmed that there are no more base metals. There would be other shard metals if they came to Scadrial but I highly doubt that they are based off that. One theory is that they are for pther alloys which we don't know about yet. Ok. I got Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons during the steam sale and it is one of the best games I have ever played. It is one of the very precious few games that truly combines the story and the gameplay mechanics. There is no dissonance between them. The game is only 2.5-3 hours long so you can easily play it in one session and that will be by far the best experience. Brothers is a brilliantly designed, extremely emotional game and if you play games at all I highly highly recommend you play it. (Yes, as emotional as a Brandon book ) You do need a controller to play it, there are keyboard mechanics but using a keyboard would cripple the experience. It is available on xbl and psn and through steam, if you have a controller for your pc then steam is a good bet as it is currently half price (7.49USD) for the duration of the holiday sale. There isn't too much more to say, don't watch a let's play, you won't get the proper experience that way. But please, if you possibly can, play this game.

Well, colour me impressed then You sing very well for someone without training. Also, nice pictures. (Though as Weiry and theShogun said, I'm fairly sure this site is supposed to be kept child-friendly )

Long Game 1: In the Wake of the Koloss

Yay werewolves (/mafia if you really have to call it that ) Clancy is the village storyteller. (Hey, you said similar to our usernames ) But wait, how does a village in the final empire have a dedicated storyteller? He used to be a traveler, defying the lord Rulers will by travelling between plantations and villages telling tales of other parts of the empire. After the fall of the lord Ruler and with the rampaging kollos hordes it became too dangerous to continue traveling alone.- 462 replies

Welcome Grayv! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts

Not everyone might agree but I would say definitely not. He is powerful sure, but that doesn't give him the right to define morals for those less powerful than himself. On a similar note, if our morals were based off the Greek "gods" the world would be a nastier place.
-
Sorry but I am really not seeing how your logic makes sense here. You are talking in absolutes: control everything or don't use the power at all. Where did I give the impression that I was talking about not doing anything? There is a massive difference between allowing freewill and doing nothing. Edit: Perhaps it would my understanding of what you are trying to say if you said how exactly you define "a God".
-
We are getting a bit off-topic here, but I have a slight problem with this: Allowing people to do what they choose does not stop a god from being all-powerful so long as they have the capability such that it is their choice to let people have free will. Things happening outside of their specific direction doesn't necessarily imply that they are incapable of complete control, simply that they do not choose to exercise it if they are capable of it.

An interesting thought Swimmingly. We cannot be 100% certain that brass/zinc directly affect your cognitive aspect but given our current understanding of realmatics I think it is a reasonable guess that it might do so. That said, this too is pure speculation but I would hazard a guess that your cognitive aspect might be linked to your body mainly through your brain. That isn't to say it isn't connected to the other parts but just suggesting that the main link is to the brain. If that was the case then alfoil hats would make perfect sense for blocking zinc and brass. /blatant speculation

What table are you using? The one I use has the full 23 just like all the previous ones. It is relatively easy to see the evolution from the final empire alphabet's lerasium to alloy of law's lerasium. The only major difference other than the different style of writing used in AoL is that the outer curve was extended to surround the inner.
-
Thanks for posting the image. Sorry to be a party pooper but that is definitely lerasium. In the alloy of law steel alphabet the symbol is practically identical, the only difference is that the spikes continue margnially further in the book version. Here is an image of the lerasium symbols from the 4 different steel alphabets in chronological order The final one is the alloy of law one. Lerasium is 'a' in Steel alphabet. Edit: Attached a png so it was easier to look at lerasium evolution.bmp
-
I don't have a copy I really need to get one. Are you able to post an image of said symbol? Also, yes, clearly a cigar XD
-
Well, the whole "father figure" thing? I know. Though my point is still an entirely valid observation. Anyway, the real problem isn't strict balance it is dominant strategies, and unfortunately the MAG has a number of them. (oh, and yes I did read the link ) All good then

@Pechvarry, sorry that this is a rather late reply. I'm curious to hear your problems with the system? Have you had a chance to play it yet to see it in action? I'm not trying to say the system doesn't have flaws, I am just genuinely curious as to what specifically you don't like. I don't believe we have any spots open in any campaigns just now. But if you are interested I can send you a pm when we are next looking for players.

Mine is the coat of arms from my mother's side of the family. I use my mother's rather than my father's side of the family because it looks better and the motto is much better Roughly translated it is "They are able who believe they can." Which is an awesome motto.

I've only seen the first. (The second isn't out till boxing day in AU) but I did really enjoy it.I think tthey are dragging it out a bit with three films but the first was enough fun that I can forgive that. @bartbug, well, I may be unusual in that I wanted more of the singing Not the one about what Volvo Baggin's hates, but I personally would have liked to have the rest of misty mountains. I am a singer though so may be coloring my opinion

The bridgemen being under Dalinar's protection means that that would be a very empty threat. Short of assasination or similar, which personally I do not think Amaram would resort to, there isn't really anything he can do to them without some very clever maneuvering.

Just a question on this bit. Do we have any wob on how long the effect of the shard's intent lingers on a sliver? I always thought that the changes were fairly permanent. Sure once someone was detached from a Shard they could be changed again by external things but I didn't think it would just "wear off" after they became a sliver. I realize now that there was no proof for this but it still seems to make more sense to me. I seem to recall Brandon referring to the shard's intent "changing" the holder which would imply lasting changes.
