  1. I assume this is referring to means William Shatner, the actor who played Kirk, who was also Jewish. Though, to be fair, Spock would no doubt find wearing a red cap like that to be 'highly illogical'.
  2. Well, it's not like they can iron-pull wallets to them like magical pickpockets or something... Oh, wait a moment. They can. That was always my assumption for how Kelsier filled his petty cash needs, anyway.
  3. Yeah, I'd pretty much agree with that. The coin can just be used to go up, and then a slight push on anything nearby can be used to give the Mistborn additional push in other directions. And since when you have multiple vectors they all add up to a single vector, it gives the appearance as the coin just lifting you in a non-vertical angle.
  4. Well, we have one of my favorites (Star Wars' Imperial March) on this thread, but not the other. The following track is one that I think would most fit The Lord Ruler. It is known simply as 'One-Winged Angel', and is the theme for Sephiroth from FFVII. I prefer the Advent Children version (because there's at least one good thing from that movie.)
  5. I went from Forescout (which I like) to Hazekiller (which I like, but not as much). Though, due to my seeming inability to stop being sarcastic, that may go back to Forescout. Might be worth it. EDIT: Someone upvoted me, so I'm probably not going back to a suicidal watcher (that is, a someone who watches out for storms who may also be borderline suicidal). Anyone know what's after Hazekiller?
  6. Yomen's not bad, actually. Very practical. Horrible as a protagonist, of course, but that's why he isn't. He probably would make in on my MIstborn top 10 list. (Sazed and Steris are both better, though) Well, some basic criticism can be found here and here, and if you like horror, I recently read an excellent novel that can be found here, though most of the horror in Scythe is in the setting.
  7. "Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the Comedian is the only thing that makes sense" eh? Yeah, except some of us aren't like that. My real life personality isn't like that. In other words, I'm not like that. It takes one scoffer to undo the work of thousands. What people do not get, and I get frustrated at this, is that all people who exist who don't share your sense of humor, or any sense of humor. Humor, like emotions, has a time and place and this is not it. If I mention in a thread discussing personalities that there is a useful tool, and the response is: when, in actuality, it's highly regarded in the psychological field, and a very useful baseline, that annoys some people. Like me. It's why I like Jasnah as a character, and don't like Wayne.
  8. Not really sure why there's a lot of mockery of a system that's been the product of several lifetimes of highly intelligent minds, but if you feel the need to dislike the Meyers-Briggs test which is a good tool for discovering yourself, then go ahead, I guess. I won't stop you. Except for, you know, being sarcastic. Because some internet crackpot is on the level of Katherin Briggs, Isabel Myers, and (like I mentioned earlier) all of their work is based on Carl Jung. Absolutely. Here, I'll give you all upvotes to show how serious I am.
  9. Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. Favorite element on the periodic table?
  10. That's because it's not science. Meyers-Briggs is a psychological tool - it is by no means definitive - and, as such, is not proven right. Also has a nasty habit of shifting what you are based on the mood you're in when you take the test. It is simply a way to give a shape to identity and give stability to structure. Now, there are people who don't like being pigeonholed into one of two categories four times in a row, (and people can't be broken down that simply), but it's a very good start for understanding yourself. Also, it's based heavily in Jungian psychology, and I like Jung. A lot of what @Jedal said applies to me too. I'm very straightforward, to the point of being brutal, occasionally, and view the world from a black-and-white lenses, not because it is, but because I'd like it to be.
  11. Not necessarily. If you take a quick look at a Meyers-Briggs test you might have a better idea, but the concept that emotions are a universal primary expression isn't true. I should know, I'm an INTP. I have emotions, but they aren't something I frequently use - I'm more likely to analyze things using numbers and concepts, rather than an emotional response. It's not something that most people have (which is why I initially thought I had a slight problem), but it is something that's perfectly normal for certain people, such as myself. As I said earlier, I have a nasty tendency to analyze things using purely numbers and logic. I also have no problem with not having to deal with people for days on end while I do something I like (i.e. researching odd subjects like artificial intelligence, or writing). That's not to say I don't have emotions or don't use them - they just aren't the primary tool I use for understanding the world. I have good friends who are like me, and I have good friends who aren't.
  12. The intention was that I'd introduce the characters, who draw the reader until the hook (which is literally next chapter). Hmm. It's not so hard for me to throw in a line during the chapter one briefing talking about the possibility of a civil war / coup within the empire caused by a rebel faction within the army and/or possibly the government. The village actually has a developed history within the greater world, so I know a bit about it. The construction was done using medieval means, and was recently (~25 years) abandoned, meaning that the wood has begun growing weak from lack of maintenance. The wood is suppose to be fine, just old and a bit rotted. Also, Admiral S has a rocket launcher.
  13. So, which Lantern in sector 2814 are you? (17th shard cookies are basically Red Lantern Rings, by the way.) Welcome to the shard, glad to have another Mistborn fans who appreciates the power of Feruchemical steel.
  14. The chapter is actually beta-titled 'Just follow orders!', though 'Fun with Scissors' might actually be better. I'm constantly shifting titles. Stakes: The stakes are fully explained yet. There's an expo-dump next chapter (I think) which explains it all. My thoughts were to get out the characters and baseline them before firing the stakes up (because the stakes only rise. This is at least one part thriller), though I'll probably get lectured on the info dumping next submissions. Eh, I'll worry about it then. Combat: I tend to be weak at group combat, especially this early in a novel when I'm just getting a feel for how the characters mesh together. I, also, very much enjoy witty banter in a fight (most likely from growing up on a steady diet of Spider-Man comics), so it's everywhere. A few characters don't do it, but it can get excessive. Let me know if I should try stopping myself. Weak timber: I ... I'm sorry? Wood isn't my forte, so I can't go into specifics without a lot of research. Can you give me a quick idea of a good tree to destroy? I've gotten the maid-and-butler-y line a few times, and I don't really knows what that means. Could you explain? Fy: So, Fy is ridiculously powerful. The magic that humans can use, (called Shaman) is a magic based on storing energy in precise symbols, and releasing them. Fy can control the elements with merely meditating. He doesn't need symbols or specifics, which isn't supposed to be possible. As such, I mention this a few times. I can probably do it a bit better, though. Yes, details is needed. Everything you mention will go into my draft two notes. Perspective is usually third-person centering on Seyn, but it shifts around a bit. I'd say an even half and half, overall, early novel focuses more on Seyn, later focuses more on the rest of the Swarm, especially when they split up. It can't hit them on the ground because the cannon is embedded alongside the body of the aircraft. Guns that can fire multiple rounds are invented yet, so aircraft need to be designed to fire at ground targets, which hunter-killers aren't. Stakes have been dealt with. Steaks are good medium-rare, though D likes them rare, and N likes them well-done. 'Tis not a dragon. Thar be no dragons whereabouts the regions of Scissors & Bows. 'Tis a dragonling, which is smaller, has four wings, and more details are given in later chapters. They don't serve a purpose other than mounts for Hunters. They aren't sentient, and they can't breathe fire. Sorry for the delay in responding, I've had a busy week.
  15. Just finished reading Scythe by Neal Shusterman. I made a list of, I think, seven good reasons I shouldn't like it, but I do. Neal Shusterman is one of the best dark writers today. Not horror, but his work is very dark (Dark Fusion is worse.) I'm going to reread it to catch all the subtleties, but Scythe is an expertly written novel for learning how to incorporate darker elements without delving into body horror or jump-scares, or the like. Also, if you want to know how to write from the perspective of an insane person, he's also written Challenger Deep. I read it in a locked room in a single sitting, which wasn't a good idea on my part, and I found it amazing. Challenger Deep is told from the perspective of someone who is insane, crafted in part from Neal Shusterman's own experiences.
  16. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Focusing on problems one step at a time lets you solve them better than focusing on them as a whole. Step one is to write a good novel. Also, as long as I'm spouting esoteric wisdom, 'Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door.'
  17. Yes. An alloy is two separate molecules bonded together, i.e. Iron(Fe) + Carbon(C) for steel. Ettmetal is a different metal entirely, so in this analogy, it might be Lead(Pb). In reality, Pagerunner thinks it's Cesium, and I speculate it's a stable version of Element 119. Pagerunner's probably right. EDIT: The atium/lerasium alloy turns you into a Seer if you burn it, by the way.
  18. Well, yes but no actually. While you can't chemically breakdown Ettmetal into Atium and Lerasium, you can create Atium and Lerasium from the sub-atomic components of a Harmonium atom, from the way it's being understood.
  19. Well, then this could happen. Planets of particles are bad. Also, Ruin needs to be in people for him to affect them. Wait. That's a weird thought. So, that supposing that all humans contain trace elements of godmetal electrons and/or protons (but probably not protons). Do you suppose that has to do with Spiritwebs? In other words, would drinking a stable harmomium-salt solution give you the ability to use Scandrial powers? Someone needs to ask this.
  20. You would call me but a demon? I fear you have no idea precisely what what cain you are raising by doing that.
  21. *cough* Submit it to Reading Excuses, then. We could use something holiday themed. I've taken a look, it's decent. Good perspective.
  22. The important thing with M.U.G.E.N is animation skills more than anything. The easiest way to make characters is to modify existing ones, and the programming knowledge required for that is just knowing what directory is what. It'll take maybe two hours to learn the process of inputting characters (i would think), the hard part is creating them in the first place. The impossible part is achieving perfect balance. As to where in the Shard to recruit? This thread isn't a bad location if you're serious, but what I would recommend to anyone doing this is to spend a month or two learning the basics and create a 'test build'. Show it off, and then ask for help. It proves that you're serious. And if you're wondering, I'm OK at pixel art, decent at programming in general. If I was convinced that there'd be a dedicated group, I'd gladly lend my services, such as they are. In terms of legal issues ... well, this gets into the 'interesting' side of things. The rule of thumb that fan-games like this operating on is that they use their own assets and make no profit. Especially considering that this is a small game just proving the dedication of a loyal fan base, it's unlikely Brandon would protest. Still, it'd be best to ask for his permission first, but also after a 'test build' is done, for the same reason as above.
  23. Yes. At least, I have yet to see anything against this. I was going to calculate the amount of lashings Kaladin would need to do to accomplish a black hole, But I stopped at "a lot". The amount of weight you'd need to create a Feruchemic black hole, at a very rough guess on my part something to the degree of 10^30 times a normal body weight. That a 1 followed by thirty zeroes.
  24. Asked this at a signing about three years ago. No. It's impossible to Steelrun FTL, I had WoB confirming this. See here. The rule of thumb is that Feruchemy cannot be used to break the laws of physics. Also, without going into detail, being able to go FTL by definition excludes the ability to go backwards in time by going FTL. EDIT: Also, I've spoken out against Spool's point. Friction would kill you, but Steelrunning doesn't require acceleration, it just dumps the speed on you. Also, friction wouldn't kill you. The nuclear blast would.
  25. The best software to do what is being described here is called M.U.G.E.N. It is a software that is currently free-to-download and designed for making 2D fighting games. The downside is that it requires knowing both DOS and pixel animation. If anyone is serious about what you are describing, it'd be best to try and recruit a team of such people from the whole of the Shard. As someone with (mild) experience in such things, I will say it'd be best to have at least a six-man team and a willingness to put in several hours a week working on such a project. It is quite feasible, assuming that Brandon (or the company who currently possesses the Cosmere game rights) doesn't fire off the dreaded cease-and-desist.
