  1. Testing, testing, 1-2-3. I'm here all week, remember to tip your waitress. (* This is a calculated social experiment. Don't worry if you don't get it.)
  2. Yup. I think the funniest example (although not a TV show) was when Sly Stallone 'remade' the inimitable Brit Gangster film "Get Carter", starring the very imitable Michael Caine. Then there's Elementary of course. At least they co-opted our very own Johnny Lee Miller for the part, but still...
  3. Lol - another excellent example of American parlance providing a replacement with none of the understated poetry of the English original
  4. Lol - even your procrastination was derailed by the internet
  5. I was just pulling your leg (You have that expression in the US, don't you?).
  6. On the subject of submission length, I tend to think of it as the aggregate of the weekly submissions. If 5 people all posted 6.5k words, I must admit I would be a bit irked, because that would be 32.5k words instead of 25k, plus 30%! It doesn't sound like a lot, but my writing time is heavily limited by work, so I get a bit jealous of it when it comes to critiquing. This is sounding like sour grapes, it's not supposed to. I'm content to read 6.6k from you - not a problem for me. I've been over 5k myself, a bit. (But not over 6k, Marci, lol). I like the sound of the format you describe, certainly an easier way to digest a longer submission, and to get a better overall flavour for the piece.
  7. You just managed to head-off my righteous indignation at the pass ;o) How quickly, indeed
  8. Yeah, Silk will most likely appear on Sunday evening. Doing the math from what I've seen over the week, I think you'll be on for Monday.
  9. Mrs Doubtfire!?! (Brings a tear to the eye - Robin Williams R.I.P. - comedy genius). Well, of course it is, all the clues are crystal clear now So... A man returns home on a windy day, wishing he had worn an extra layer.
  10. Cradle-snatcher! lol Great post, your enthusiasm is infectious! (Never liked that phrase, I think any positive connotations of infection have long gone.) Anyway, really looking forward now to reading some of your novel soon!
  11. .
  12. Whoa, I've stumbled into the Soap thread. My wife 'forced' me to watch Coronation Street for about 2 years before she gave it up ;op Anyway, I know I've 'had a shot' at this submission before, but Shadow raises some v.interesting points (clearly!). I was interested to see you talking about shared experience with mental illness. Clearly, you both identify with Baxter, but the most readers I expected will not have had experience with mental illness, even if they do (later) over their lifetime (I don't know the stats). Therefore, I guess you have the challenge of conveying the subtleties to the informed reader. Why does Kim still bring him coffee? (easiest example to recall). It may just be a short one-liner about her training (She is a nurse, right?). I'm also going to bang on about the plot, as Shadowfax tagged it too. The fact of Baxter's memory issues is a real kicker, meaning you can't even drop in a recollection of the door / ghost to remind the reader that it's still lurking further down the plot-line, but I wonder if Kim couldn't remember it for him, triggering a recollection in Baxter that would at least keep it in the reader's mind. Looking forward to Monday!
  13. Tarnation, yee ain't nothing but a couple o' youngsters! (shakes walking stick in your general direction) Maybe, I should start submitting my first novel, painstakingly 'crafted' over 25+ years before there was Writing Excuses or Reading Excuses, in a land before time itself existed... (cough) QUOTE - Marci said: "I will get this thing right, someday." My point is you can do it, look forward, keep going, repeat after me 'Finish first, fix it later.'
  14. Yeah, I wasn't meaning it's like getting into Albania or anything. Non-Yanks (like me) now need an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) form completed before we travel in order to enter the U.S. I'm planning a trip later in the year.
  15. Lol. I think the authorities would be only too pleased to assist Baxter leaving the country! I'm sure the passport wouldn't be an issue. I suspect it's easier gettin out of the U.S. than getting in (having done that several times).
  16. Looks good. Honduras, Sweden and Finland also available, but I'm content with Varican City. And Ivory Coast, which is the reverse of the Irish Flag, I mean how did that come about? Don't you just love flags?
  17. Definitely 10. Think South / Central America, and Africa. It is, isn't it? Hence the question!
  18. I think we're going to get on just fine
  19. I meant that Cap and Bucky had been 'sleeping' for 60+ years, but did not express that thought well! (p.s. RDJ is 50)
  20. Did I get the horses right? What am I saying, I can Google them now to check...and I did! Okay, WLIU: In honour of Fun With Flags presented by Dr. Sheldon Cooper, name 10 countries the flags of which do NOT have red in them.
  21. Lol, no such fear here! Welcome to RE, I for one am always delighted to read new writers' works, so looking forward to seeing some of your stuff.
  22. Yay! We want Baxter, we want Baxter. (Dear goodness, what am I saying?)
  23. Line comments as I read, as usual. “their glowing, electric vapor never losing their its individual integrity” – I think – it refers to the vapor. The punctuation is weird. “It is nothing,” the Apprentice began. – As a case in point, these are not separate sentences. “Inspiration is humanity’s greatest renewable resource” – Excellent line. “The Apprentice handed the Master his long, sharp scythe. Together, they went to the place where humans dwelt, powered by the engines of inspiration” – I find the last line a bit unclear. It sounds like Death and his apprentice are powered by inspiration, or use it for propulsion, which doesn’t seem consistent with the theme of the story. Also, I'm set to wondering about the metaphor. It was a bit unclear to me how the things related. So, by killing some people, death inspires the ones that remain?
